mjeff87 Posted January 15, 2020 Share Posted January 15, 2020 I'm going to go against the grain here and say.......manual My KJ is only the second vehicle I ever owned that was an automatic. It's my "middle aged man" vehicle, and I don't mind it. It's got the "truck" transmission in it that went in Dakota's, and it shifts somewhat "spartan".....but it will never break. mjeff87 Posted January 15, 2020 Share Posted January 15, 2020 I'll go even one step further....a manual 3-on-the-tree. It's what I learned to drive in (my grandfather's pickup truck), on the farm. I was about 8 years old, LOL. I haven't seen a column shift manual car, truck, whatever...in years. I did see an old Ford pickup in the junkyard once that had a column shift. Mercedes come with a choice of manual or automatic. I was in Prague two years ago and was surprised to the see that nearly all nice new cars had manual trans. Minuit Posted January 15, 2020 Share Posted January 15, 2020 Give me 3 pedals any day. If it's an automatic, at least make it an unobtrusive auto like the AW4. Ive started liking bench seats with column shifters even tho when i first started looking at comanches that was probably my least favorite. derf Posted January 15, 2020 Share Posted January 15, 2020 When I'm driving for pleasure, a manual makes it all so much better. I prefer to drive my car instead of riding in it. I really miss rowing through the gears in my old GTO winding through back country roads. However, when it comes to daily commuting in traffic, I prefer the automatic. All the stop and go, speed up and slow down, that you get driving in traffic makes a manual less fun. And while I have had a manual transmission with a 4 speed atlas in a rock crawling Jeep I used to own and I had fun with the 238:1 final drive ratio, I am building my silver MJ with an automatic because I like rock crawling with an automatic better. Autos are for commuters, stop/go traffic, inner city. My current truck is an auto and to be entirely honest I probably wouldnt want it to be a manual. As for my MJ, she is a manual and i love it, but my holy grail is a long bed, 4x4, auto, column shift. Sweet sweet trans tunnel real estate. Assuming you have some torque to back it up and a decent FI system and some weight to the flywheel that will let you lug it down. Mild 4x4ing I also prefer the manual, along with running snow or mud. More technical stuff and I prefer the auto as it decreases the workload significantly. Stop/go traffic, towing, hauling, I prefer an auto. Obviously modern autos with manual control and decent engine braking also help for that. I'll admit my diesel Dodge with the exhaust brake and 5spd was fun, more so than the auto version, but compared with a more modern diesel (Duramax) or high power gasser the fun does not make up for the pain in the @$$/leg. And I've only ever driving a column shift manual once... Fun, but not sure I'd want to do it all the time. There was a reason the kits to convert them to floor shift were popular. Also the column shift versus floor/console auto thing is dependent on usage and how the gates are set up. I'm pretty tempted to buy a Winters shifter for my XJ because I hate how it works so much. Minuit Posted January 16, 2020 Share Posted January 16, 2020 I'll rephrase the post I made earlier: Automatic for "appliance duties" or when the vehicle needs to do a lot of work like wheeling or towing, manual for driving enjoyment, with a floor shifter much preferred for both. I don't think I'd love driving my 89 very much sitting in stop-go-stop-go interstate traffic for an hour a day. That's when I really appreciate the auto. As far as autos go, the AW4 is still among the best IMO even though it's a 33 year old transmission. Maybe I'm just used to it though. 75sv1 Posted January 16, 2020 Share Posted January 16, 2020 I prefer a manual. I have driven them on the column twice. Didn't get used to it. I also like manuals in the snow. I can wind up the RPMs a bit. Then let off if the vehicle starts to slip a bit. The 80's Corolla, I liked the auto. The manual felt plastic. The AW4 is a good auto, and well matched for the 4.0L in the XJ. I don't know if my Volt has a transmission. It drives from the electric motor only.
