what did you do to your MJ today?

aftermarket LED for a ranger/superduty.  it's pretty nerve racking to cut such a large hole in an MJ roof.  (especially one that isn't yours!)

I'll do a writeup once it's functional.  :L:

I got the hitch and sports bar back from the powder coating co. And installed them on the MJ. A very special thank you to Shoveldead for hooking me up with the sports bar. He wanted to trade it for a swb bar but no  takers at the time so he sold it to me with much regrets. And to krustyballer for making a great looking and fitting hitch.

Pulled the carpet yesterday. All set to POR15 today and new carpet going in shortly. Not too much rust and only a handful of pinholes.

Thank God I replaced the clutch master when I got the truck. Looks like it had been leaking for a bit. I think I'm going to cut that corner of carpet a little short so I can pull it back to inspect every so often.

I think I have a big enough project here to finally get off my butt and start a build thread.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've done a few things in the last little while.   I straightened out, blasted, painted and installed an OEM rear bumper and lifted the front end 2" to level out the stance.   I also installed a front hitch.

Looks great. Is that a tonneau cover that accommodates the sport bar?

Thanks.   Yes, it an original - Pt. #8982200691.   They went for $143.95 so that's probably why there aren't many around.      It fits around the sport bar the way it should but they weren't meant to be water tight.  It wouldn't be possible.   The way they were originally mounted is terrible.   The front is OK, basically a keder rail that is screwed to the front top of the bed.   The sides and rear rely on VELCRO being stuck to the body and tailgate which would look OK when the tonneau is on but awful when it is rolled up.

I made aluminum angle iron rails that can be easily taken off when the tonneau is off.   I'm going to have the aluminum LINE-X'd so it will blend in with the bed.

I also made a second cross bar (2 are better than the original 1).   Fortunately I had a second set of the plastic brackets.   The tonneau is an original but it's short by about 2".   I'm going to have a short extension sewn on so it will hang over the top of the tailgate.   The extension will have pockets sewn in so I can insert magnetic bars to keep it reasonably tight ... I hope!

I'm not quite finished but here's what it looks like so far.

Nice! I like to see the original accessories, only have seen it in catalogs never in real life use. Thanks for posting the additional pictures.

Found another comanche for sale nearby. Its in a lot better shape than mine is and I'm contemplating selling mine and getting this one. It has nice bucket seats, AC, cruise control, power steering, slider window, tail lights and not beat to hell or rusty but said he started having issues driving it after changing the CPS. Even with that, it sounds like less of a project than what the PO of mine left me with; wiring nightmares, blocked off heater core, haggard interior, beat to hell bed...to name a few things lol

The guy finally got back to me! If it werent for my wifes birthday today, I would be picking it up after work lol but tomorrow should be the day.

He said that it was having problems starting, would take a few tries so he changed the CPS. After that it started and idled well but wouldnt drive further than 1/4-1/2 mile. I hope between the two MJs I will be able to sort everything out since they both have the same motor

Cleaned up the cad vacuum shifter and got the gunk out of the rubber connector that was blocking the engage side.  It still only engages at high vacuum.  After playing with the shift collar on the axel, it appears to get jambed onto the start of the splines in the disengaged position.  Almost as if the spline isn't cut quite far enough towards the passenger side.  I think I'm going to make a limiting clamp for the sifter so it can't pull it over quite that far.20230614_195225.JPG.5d6efbb31e918136df7434c05b664c78.JPG

The exhaust gasket on my 2.5 finally blew out all the way, so it's time to install the aFe header I bought for it several years ago. It blew out because like all of them the very front bolt/ stud broke off. It was actually like that when I bought it 15-16 years ago. I thought the very rear one was broken too, but evidently it just fell out.

While I have it apart, I'll be deleting the EGR, installing new motor mounts, and doing a full tune up.

The aFe header is made for late model 2.5's, so there's no EGR port, and no O2 sensor bung. I cut a bung off of an old exhaust pipe, cleaned it up, drilled a hole and welded it on.

All I need to do now is extract the broken bolt, and put it back together. IMG_20230617_122047962_HDR.jpg.76c73db63443f138c3d7764bae16294c.jpgIMG_20230617_122211791.jpg.7ebf1374e18bac8b4e5d513a4343f942.jpgIMG_20230617_122229372.jpg.11685613cb2b23d69ce5b124df7c20ce.jpg

doors are finally assembled with all new weatherstripping.  :D   multiple times as it turned out, as the order or steps is very important (plus I swapped one of the channels left to right and had to undo that too).
