This is a project that has been sat on for quite a while. It was purchased 3 years ago with 280k miles, A blown engine, and rotted out floors and rockers. When I was 16 I stripped the whole interior, cut the rot out of the rockers, put all the parts I need in random places and then just lost interest in it for a while. fast forward 2 years and I finally get the motivation to work on it again so I don’t have to daily the 60k mile survivor MJ in the New England salt land. The engine came out of 2001 XJ That rolled over and was then purchased by my dad in 2003 to be used as a parts truck for his MJ. The 01 Motor sat under a bench for 19 years and fired right up and runs great with a little seafoam in the oil to clean things up. The transmission and t-case came out of my dads old 98 2dr that rotted apart on us and got cut into pieces by us. Rip 98 2dr the rest is being saved for a future trailer build Old engine out The one ton crane from harbor freight doesn’t lift high enough to get the engine+trans out with the header in place New engine in

Hey Guys! I'm down in South Florida, just snagged a 88' Comanche Pioneer for cheap last week! I'm super excited, I'm a big fan of Comanche's. Can't wait for the journey. 88 Comanche Pioneer -2wd Aw4 (doesn't catch in drive, gotta start on 1st) -Floor pan rust (both sides) -Toolbox -Headliner needs work -Dash cracked -Orignal rims -Back window seal leak I'm excited to get to work honestly. I'm taking baby steps and doing it right. Gonna restore, weld, drill and paint my way into a restored Comanche!

Well, I guess this is the start to my build thread! won't really be a build just the progress of my daily. I’ve had her for like 2 months now and so far ive: Replaced both window regulators Fixed a lower radiator hose leak Got a steal on new taillights Did front breaks New tires Window tint Right now I'm working on chasing down a TCU problem. My trans isnt shifting on its own so I have to go 1-3-4. I’ve got some big plans for this truck in the future its just a matter of saving up! If you want to follow the build closer follow my insta @ DannyD815 I will add more photos when I can!

Hello all, I’m new to the Comanche cluband am building my first MJ. I have a 98 XJ that I wheeled and drove since 2003. I recently totaled it and picked up a 1986 MJ for $600. Replacing the floor pan now, I plan on doing a Rusty’s long arm as well as swap the 4.0 and AW4 from the XJ. The MJ had a 2.8 with a manual, not sure if I need to cut the cross member mounts off the unibody for clearance with the trans or fitment with the long arm crossmember. Has anybody ran into this before on one of these awesome Jeeps? I really have been getting a lot out of all the experience posted on this forum. Cheers!

Hey guys, new to the forum. So I've had my 87 with the factory 2.5 and aw4 for about a year. I had no idea how rare it was until I had shifting issues. Turns out it is most likely my TPS. After I had tried a new TPS it didnt fix it. I then found out I was receiving the TPS for a 4.0. There has been absolutely zero aftermarket support for a TPS for a 2.5/aw4. I had to go to the dealer and have them search it and there was only 3 of then left in the continental US. I will find out tomorrow night if it in fact is the correct part. If it is, I will post the part number. I have yet to find any other supplier, though i find it hard to believe these 3 are literally the last 3 available new. If anyone has input on this, or a link to any aftermarket TPS let me know, also I am trying to keep track of all the part numbers of anything else that is hard to find. The torque converter for example crossed over to a TC for a volvo, and I worked. So I will relay any of these types of things that I can. Lord help any other 2.5/aw4 unicorn owners.

Hey guys, new member here! If this has already been answered somewhere then I apologize, I have not been able to find it! So I’m trying to figure out if the flexplate follows the engine year or the transmission year. I’ve got a ’91 MJ, 4.0, auto, 2wd, column shift, short bed, etc. I recently grenaded a wheel bearing and ruined a spindle, so decided to go ahead and do a 4wheel swap. I bought an almost exact 1990 Comanche but 4x4 and worse body to part out. In doing some research I noticed flexplates are listed by ’87-’90 then ’91-’00. Both seem to have the same specs (164 teeth, 13.83” OD, 12-14 pitch) but have two different part numbers, different weights, and two very different prices. So if I’m using the 1990 transmission/transfer case but keep the 1991 engine, which flexplate do I need to use?? Thank you in advance!

Basically, just what the title says. The 2000 AW4 in Junior is misbehaving...throwing the P705 code which translates into the OD solenoid is not 'electrically' checking out upon start. I have replaced the solenoid and it worked for awhile but now has started to throw the code again. The problem is the OD works occasionally and has no pattern to its misbehavior. Over the weekend the truck was driven to Hattiesburg and back - OD worked on the way up and did not on the way back (which would seem to indicate fluid circulation and/or warm up is not the case). When the solenoid was replaced the filter and fluid was changed out - no particular debris or dirt was observed (filter and fluid had been changed when the trans was installed at conversion). Because the solenoid is mechanical (activated by an electrical signal) can the TCM be the culprit here? When the truck is started, does the TCM physically actuate the solenoid or just check to see if it worked the last time the truck was running? Thanks Jake

A long time ago somebody sent me a link for the metric fittings to use on an AW4 to delete the quick disconnects. They were a metric to AN fitting. That was a laptop or two back in time, so I've lost the link. I think Summit or Jegs sold them. Anyone have any ideas? I hate the quick disconnects with a passion.

Hey gang! My project is moving on to the next phase and I've got the idea that it would be fun to have a 97+ interior with a bench seat and AW4 with a column shifter (I've got my reasons). I've searched and searched, but I can't seem to find anyone who has been down this road before. I'm gonna try it anyway, but it would be awesome if someone knows anything about this swap. PLEASE AND THANKS! It would seem that a 94+ Dakota is the obvious donor:

I got a 2000 XJ as my first car, I bought it from my neighbor who had served in the marines stationed on the Hawaiian islands. Three years later, after spending endless time, money, sweat, and blood on it. Someone rear-ended me, totaled the Jeep and bent the uni-frame out of shape. I had always liked comanches and cherokees, so I decided I would find an MJ to transfer my XJ's heart, soul, and skin on to. I found a 1989 Eliminator in Lake Havasu City, Arizona with 130,000 miles, rust free, and a clean title. It was too good to let go. After an 8 hour drive through a ton of desert and Las vegas at rush hour, in a Jeep held together by prayers, I finally had it home. Little did I know that this MJ had spent time in Hawaii too

Hey guys, its been quite a while since ive been on here but I'm ready to step up the motor in my 91 Comanche with an AMC 304 and was wondering if i can get any pointers and tips? I have an AMC 304 from a 76 CJ 7. I plan on using an AW4 behind it and an NP231. As far as room in the engine bay, i know it should fit. Ive seen a few people talk about flex plate problems as well as starter problems. Does anybody have any advice on what to do or what these problems may be? I also heard motor mounts are an issue but could be fixed. Let me know of any tips or a link to a write up from someone in the same boat as i am, thanks in advance, Gavin

This is happening on my 1990 Comanche. I recently changed the fluid and filter about a month or so ago. I checked the two connectors by the Trans dip stick and the connectors on the TCU and fuse all looked good. This started happening at highway speeds of 65-75 MPH and then started happening at lower speeds of 25-30 MPH. I can shift out of D into 3 and back and everything seems fine. Has anybody ever had this problem? HELP!

Alright, so I already have a build thread started over on CF but I am going to move all of my posts on there to here as well since I can get comanche specific advice and opinions. So, these next few posts will just be getting up to date on this site.

Hey guys, I am finishing up a engine & transmission swap with a 87 i6 with a 2wd aw4 that went into into an 89 lwb mj that originally had a ba10. I can see that my old driveshaft is too long to use now. The Aw4 is longer than the ba10. Can anyone tell me the difference in length between lwb automatic aw4 and lwb manual ba10 driveshafts? :hmm: :dunno: :hmm: Any help would be greatly appreciated.
