Hood vents

Finally driving the manche after getting the LS swap "done".  Noticed that thing puts out a TON of heat. Doesnt overheat at all, but I'd like to help evacuate the underhood heat.  My only experience really is with my Cherokee and crawling. I have a cowl hood on that and it definitely helps with heat offroading. But I know that the base of the windshield is a high pressure area and at speed it actually forced into the engine bay creating a bad pressure area. I've looked into heat extractor types but with how close the hood is to the motor, cutting and folding down isn't really an option. Ideally I want the air to pass through the radiator and out the hood over the windshield. I was thinking using hood vents but setting them as close forward as possible. Sound okay?  Any help would be great. Don't want a new hood, it'll look way out of place.

Hood vents can help evacuate the heat, but will only help marginally with any engine heating issues.  Some people add spacers to the rear of the hood so that there's a gap at the rear and that seems to work the best for evacuating heat, but it looks...weird to me.

 

I think there's several writeups on using LeBaron vents as hood vents though.

 

I'm waiting to see how it behaves in the summer to see if I have any heat issues on my LS-swap.  It was great all winter but..well...that's winter.

when I put the hood "scoop" on and in the process put a hole in the nice weather-tight factoryseal, I could then smell my engine bay at highway speeds. :(  like, really strong.  fortunately the scoop has a fan underneath (it's goal was for cooling the engine bay while on the trails) and turning it on pushed the stinky air forward into the airstream enough to carry it away from the cowl and the smells stopped.  so I ran it like that from then on.

I don't think i should have over heating issues, the electric fan I have moves 3600cfm and so far today in 80 degree it never got above 205F. but I nearly burned my hand on the hood.

 

I thought about hood spacers as well but along with looking 'off' , it still has the issue that the open area is right at the high pressure area at the base of the windshield. I need something along the lines of these:

What if you looked into a hood like what @Limeyjeeper has on Comanche Dawn?

This a is textbook example of "seemed like a good idea the time" huh?

They get hot for sure. Mine stopped steaming after I replaced the cap on the overflow bottle. And, I don't lean on the hood after a long drive. :L:

I still feel it was a good idea (helps fix the "too hot to touch" issue if you need to do a trail repair under the hood), but it clearly had some unforeseen drawbacks. :(  but also maybe my engine bay is just stinkier than most.  :dunno:

Personally I say go with the factory hood vents. Theres nothing like fit and finish of an OEM part doing what its meant to do:

You can also find these on the Orvis edition ZJ and the 5.9 ZJ. These hood vents are relatively common in the UK, you can find them on ebay uk or from breakers in the UK. I've even seen complete hoods with the vents for sale for $50 or so on ebay uk, I don't need another set but I was tempted to ask if I bought the whole hood if they would remove the vents and ship them to the US.

Couldn’t agree more :L:. I’m not 100% sure, but I read somewhere that the Orvis XJ vents are not functional and are just for the looks. The 5.9 ZJ ones are and have drip pans as well. I did a quick mock up on my mj the other day.

I bought a set here in the US. I remember about $150 to $180. There is a write up somewhere to install them. I got into the test fit phase of and cut the drip pan to clear the braceing on the underside of the hood. Also, I like to run  ceramic coated headers. They help in underhood temps.

Wow lots of options here. That sunroof style hood would actually be pretty legit...

 

After searching many and many website I think I found some I'm gonna get.

They are angled the exact way I wanted. Help force the air out and not only cool but help with some downforce as well. Plus they make drip rails for them too.

Do you have a closeup if the Hood? What did you do about the center channel? 

OP, I’ve been thinking about these but would really like something with a drip rail.

There is no center hood “channel” or bracing on the xj hood that run the entire length of the hood. It’s more of a V pattern brace so there is plenty of room to add a vent/scoop without cutting any bracing. I have a set of the hyline off-road vents new in box somewhere at my folks place stateside. If your interested I can see about digging them up
