Those welds are a masterpiece compared to the stock welds and spot welds on my comanche. Sports Illustrated must have released a new centerfold the day my comanche was assembled. There are areas where spot welds are physically missing. Whoever was on that October '87 cover clearly must have been worth it. Hey at least I can measure the gauge of the welding wire they used, a piece was kindly leftover. Wow

UPDATE: NTK O2 sensor 23553 (RENIX)
Salvagedcircuit replied to fiatslug87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm away from my MJ at the moment, but I did some more testing. My brother suggested that ceramic manufacturing processes have changed since the 1970s and it's possible the sensor does not read within the 5-7 ohm range when not at temperature. I used a heatgun and applied heat to the o2 sensor for 5 minutes, varying side to side on the O2 sensor. The resistance between A and C climbed to 5.7ohm and stabilized while at 280F. The measurement between A and B was still open and infinite. It is possible these sensors were wired wrong and the wire for C is supposed to be in B. I am planning on duplicating the test with the new old stock sensor to see how it performs under the same thermal conditions. The resistance between C and A gradually falls while the O2 sensor is cooling. It's currently at 4.7ohm, once it reached ambient temperature it's back at 3.7ohm. It's possible this sensor will work with the wires swapped. @Htchevyiihave you had luck with your recently purchased o2 sensor and do you have a renix monitor to tell if the O2 sensor is working properly? I'll try and test these sensors next week when I'm at my MJ. -
UPDATE: NTK O2 sensor 23553 (RENIX)
Salvagedcircuit replied to fiatslug87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I believe the O2 sensors being sold at the amazon link below, listed above, are not correct: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000BZJ62C I took resistance readings on my failed o2 sensor, the 4 wire bosch o2 sensor and two known good new old stock o2 sensors from AC delco and SMP. Here are my results: The 3 wire very old and failed O2 sensor that came with my MJ measured 373 ohms between pin "B" and pin "A" The 4 wire bosch sensor measured 4.6 ohms between pin "B" and pin "A" The 3 wire new old stock SMP and AC Delco sensor measured 6.0-6.5 ohms between pin "B" and pin "A" The 3 wire bosch 12009 sensors I just purchased from that amazon link above measured infinite. There is no resistance between pin "B" and pin "A." These sensors will not work at all. I'm probably going to request a refund. They may be factory rejects or relabeled from something else. Something is not right. The measurements taken were between B and A. For giggles, I measured between C and A and it measured 3.7 ohms. I did not test C and A measurements on the other sensors. -
UPDATE: NTK O2 sensor 23553 (RENIX)

I ordered 3 and they are all identical. They all have 3 wires from the base of the sensor to the connector and have some mass to them, unlike the slender-body 4 wire o2 sensors that are problematic. What is odd is the Bosch boxes have no barcodes on them and no mentions of manufacturing location. This is supposed to be on the box, like in the last photo of the problematic 4 wire O2 sensor. The connector pins on all 3 of my purchased O2 sensors are bent which is also strange. There is also no paperwork in the boxes, like the new-old stock ones I've purchased off ebay. How has it been working for you @Htchevyii ? I'm going to measure these and compare them to my other known good ones. I'm also going to ask the seller whats up and why the original labels are being removed. Maybe he got a hold of old stock from a parts store or some fell off a truck . Seems strange. -
Woah, nice job. How did you get the rear glass trim piece off without ruining it? These are great photos, it's nice to see how to properly mask the vehicle off for paint. dang. wow.

Yeah, if the 2.5 works, iron out all the kinks and get it working nice and smoothly. Bring it to car shows and Enjoy it. Hell, I made $50 at a car show contest for being the most rare / unique.

I got one of these when i ordered some odds and ends for my MJ. Pretty cool!

Acceleration Thud Problem
Salvagedcircuit replied to Salvagedcircuit's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, I think what happened is the transfer case gear selector did not fully engage into 2wd. It's possible the previous owner adjusted the tranasfer case selector when he put on larger tires but it has been seized in place since then. I of course had no idea I needed to adjust this when I went back to stock height. I do not know how long it's been like this. I am thinking the selector may have warn or just needed to be readjusted. I just wire wheeled the rod, lubed it and readjusted it based on that amc factory video. The noise seems to have subsided, so fingers crossed it was just that and not a loose transfer case chain. -
Excellent work! That's wild that the original spare is still there. I would get some dot3 brake fluid and flush the brake lines. I found speed bleeders (they have a ball bearing inside to prevent air bubbles on back stroke) to be a godsend when bleeding. Sometimes the bleeding can be a pain to do because of the rear below bed proportioning valve. I removed mine so I can't help you there.

Acceleration Thud Problem
Salvagedcircuit replied to Salvagedcircuit's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I looked over the video again and it seems that in 2wd the transfer case chain does not move. So that ruled the transfer case chain out. I'm confused, because I checked my drive axle U-joints and they are all solid and don't have play in them. Is it possible the noise I'm hearing is a "torque relief" sound that video mentioned? That wouldn't make sense though if the transfer case is not even being utilized. I'm a bit stumped, going to have to investigate more. -

Acceleration Thud Problem
Salvagedcircuit replied to Salvagedcircuit's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I tightened down the muffler and troubleshooted some more. I put the MJ in the air on four jack stands turned on the engine and listened closely. No thudding sounds in park or in neutral. Thudding sound exists in drive and reverse. It is most noticeable going from 0-->5mph, any initial acceleration. If the tires are still rolling at idle and additional acceleration is added, the noise is not present. I noticed that in 2wd drive and at idle my front tires were slowly spinning and my back tires were spinning a lot faster. I currently have the front CAD axle linked together and the vacuum disconnected. I investigated my transfer case linkage and it was seized. I thought it may be problematic because my MJ previously had a 2.5in lift on the front with 31in tires. It is now at stock height with 235/75-R15's. It took a while to wire brush the linkage but I was able to adjust it back to factory spec following the official AMC guide: The proper linkage adjustment made the front wheels not spin while in 2wd. I did not put the MJ into 4H or 4L while in drive because I did not want to cause any damage from out of sync axles. I was able to shift between 4L and 4H while in neutral. The part time light came on in 4H and 4L too. The results of my testing point toward the transfer case. I have an AMC 231, which should be an NP231. I inspected the inside of the transfer case and even though the back seal looks wet, the fluid level is still at the recommended level, right up to the bottom of the fill port. I put an endoscope camera in there and took some photos but I did not see something glaringly wrong. I used a 3ft long screwdriver as a stethoscope and pressed it against the transfer case shell while the thudding occurred. I could hear the noise coming from inside the transfer case. At 270k miles, I'm guessing the chain has stretched. The amc 231 has a '88 build date with no rebuild tags, so I think it's original. Any ideas welcome. -

Woah. Where did you purchase this from? Is it a new old stock part or was this from a large retailer? I've been hunting down new old stock o2 sensors and it's a chore (brother also has a renix XJ). Thanks. -
Awesome. Man I need a stripe pack for my MJ
