Jlindsey86 Posted December 24, 2021 Author Posted December 24, 2021 Today I was finally able to get to my tire guy and have the original wheels that I refinished mated to some new tires. I went with the Goodyear Wrangler Radial as they were OE and just look great on a stock height Comanche. I am blown away by what a difference they made. This little truck now has a presence! Here she is this morning vs: this evening. No plans for a 4x4 conversion. My main goal with this Comanche is to keep it as close to stock as I can while refurbishing it to be as close to new as possible. There are a-lot of minor body issues that I will be addressing through 2022. If I ever get the cab sealed then I will complete its sound deadening treatment and put in new carpet.
watchamakalit Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 Truck looks great. I am looking forward to your progress. Well done.
Jlindsey86 Posted January 6, 2022 Author Posted January 6, 2022 To finish off the wheel refurbishment I added some center cap decals to cover the faded originals. The "Jeep" text is about 30% larger than OEM but I am happy with the look.
Minuit Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 That looks really nice. I think you made a great choice going with the original wheels and as close to OE tires as possible. Suits the look of the truck well.

Blade Posted January 8, 2022 Posted January 8, 2022 The wheels, tires and center caps are a very nice look on your comanche. Good job! refurbishing those wheels. You have inspired me to do the same on my build. What tire size did you go with?

It appears this is the only size available for the Goodyear Wrangler Radials anymore. There are better tires out there but I am specifically going for an OEM look.
Blade Posted January 13, 2022 Posted January 13, 2022 Ok. Thanks for the information on those Wrangler Radials.
Jlindsey86 Posted June 5, 2023 Author Posted June 5, 2023 Well, 18 months after my resto rust is starting to appear on my wheels. At this point I am going to have them powder coated once my trailer hitch arrives. On a brighter note I rigged up a repair for my break release cable using a band clamp and some epoxy. It is nice not having to reach up under the dash to release the e brake!

I ended up spraying my turbine wheels with Rust-Oleum 248929 High Performance clear Wheel Spray Paint. I think I'm going to regret that in a few weeks as I have a feeling the clear coat is not going to hold up to even road sand.
Jlindsey86 Posted June 5, 2023 Author Posted June 5, 2023 I used a self etching primer followed by 5 coats of VHT wheel paint. I did not clear coat them. Looking forward I am going to have them media blasted, powder coated, followed by a low gloss clear.

Which is the diameter of the yellowed logo in the center of my steering wheel horn button. I'd be OK without the bugle on it.
WranglerMangler Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 This is a beautiful truck. And a ‘92 as well! Love the wheels and tires and Love the valve cover powder coat job too. Keep up the good work!! Didn’t happen to see, How many miles?
Jlindsey86 Posted June 8, 2023 Author Posted June 8, 2023 Thank you, the odometer is stuck at 131k but the reality is around 147k.
Jlindsey86 Posted July 15, 2023 Author Posted July 15, 2023 Got around to getting a few more projects accomplished. Finally replaced the o-rings in the oil filter adapter. I was pleasantly surprised to find that mine was held in with a hex head bolt rather than a torx. Wasn't a bad job other than being a little dirty. When I purchased my MJ it was missing its factory radio. Instead of trying to find the OEM, I went a different direction and decided that I would put together a period correct audio build that the original owner could have theoretically installed when the truck had originally been purchased. It took me over a year of searching but I finally found a NOS Pioneer headunit from 1992 and purchased it immediately! It looks right at home in the manche and sounds great! There will be more to come with the stereo build. To get ready for some upcoming body work I removed the pin stripping that the previous owner had put on the truck. I will be going with the oem style PIONEER side graphics.
Salvagedcircuit Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 That radio is looking sharp. So period correct
WranglerMangler Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 I love the period correct radio. Very nice touch. Good idea.
Drahcir495 Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 Love what you’re doing with this truck. And I agree with everyone on the wheels - greatness!
Jlindsey86 Posted September 28, 2023 Author Posted September 28, 2023 Looking for help in regards to what side graphics came OEM with my Pioneer. She is a 1992 model with a build date of October 1991. There seems to be two different style "Pioneer" graphics offered at this time. The VIN is: 1J7FT36S4NL159747. The original owner remembers it having the same graphics as the red truck when it was new but wasn't sure of the color of the stripes.
89 MJ Posted September 28, 2023 Posted September 28, 2023 Should have the top graphics. The ones on the silver truck (which I believe is @acfortier's truck) were the Pioneer stripes starting in 1991. The other style was used from 87-90.
fiatslug87 Posted September 29, 2023 Posted September 29, 2023 Unfortunately, they are not currently being reproduced. However, I remember someone saying they were sending a NOS one to Phoenix Graphics (???) for reproduction.
