How much $ do you have tied up in your Comanche?

OK pretty simple here, how much money do you have tied up in your Comanche? If you have multiple, pick one or break it down per truck.

 

My old 88 I had about $3,500 into it when I sold it. I bought it for $2,500 and put $1,000 worth of work into it.

 

My current '91 I have about $1,700 in it but I have a long "to-do" list as I restore it. I'm not sure how high I'll get when all is said and done. I paid $700 for it and again have $1,000 into it, check out the links in my sig for details. If I do a full re-paint like I hope to, I'll probably be at $5,000 minimum.

I too have far more money in my MJ than I care to admit... And if things go according to plan, it's only going to get worse. I have all my receipts sitting in a box. I started counting them up, got a third of the way through, and stopped. I've got a decent idea of an approximate total, but I really don't want to KNOW. It would just leave me with unpleasant feelings towards just about everything.

I've been throwing money at her for 18 years now.  replaced just about everything but the body, wire harness and engine (and I have acquired replacements for those too).  I'm pretty sure knowing the tally would send me to the hospital.

I'm one of those people. I keep track of noteworthy stuff I do, mostly oil changes and parts in an Excel spreadsheet. I'm just over $3k since the beginning in March 2012 but recently I've started tracking a rough guess at what having the same work done at a shop would cost: Just in 2014, that number's already up to $4,000 and that doesn't count the many upgrades and "because I want to" type things I've done along the way.

 

I disagree that it takes the fun out of it, but I'm anal retentive about things. I can definitely understand why someone just wouldn't want to know.

Had my Comanche for 8 years in February. Paid $1150 for it just so I could stop using the SUV for hauling trash, junk, etc.  When it was sideswiped 4 years ago, I counted $5K I had put into the truck.  I spent around $3500 more to fix the damage and repaint the truck. About 3 years ago, the truck was stolen in TJ and recovered.  I spent another $2k fixing the damage.  That is just the big stuff I can remember right now.  Doesn't count the 6 or 8 sets of bucket seats I have purchased, nor the tons of other parts I have in the garage, like extra tailgates and several spare engines (just because).  I can easily see spending another 6K on the truck in 2015

 

Now, I did price a replacement, new basic work truck, just December 26, 2014.  Least expensive new 2014 Chevy 1500 would be $24700 for a single cab long box.  Could bet a double cab 2014 long box for $25,250.  Tax and registratilon is extra. The new truck would do exactly the same thing the Comanche does, sit on the street/driveway most of the time.  Would drive less than 5000 miles per year.

 

So to answer the question of how much I have spent on the Comanche:  Something less than $25K

Including the original purchase price of $13000 and the restoration of approx. $15000, adding in misc incidentals, I have about $30000.

 

When I was having the resto done, people would ask me why didn't I just buy a new truck.  I would respond back: How much would a new truck cost?  $30000 to $35000?

 

$30k spread out over 27+ years is a small cost of ownership.

 

It's a Jeep thing.  They just don't understand!

I don't consider normal wear items and routine maintanence as "money into it." That would include tires unless they were a voluntary upgrade. That being said here is my breakdown: $400 purchase price on 2010. $560 M/T's. Call it $800 in the lift. $440 in the 4wd conversion including the 8.25 swap. $260 for the Aussie. So including little things it would be about $2,600.

I Bought mine 11 Years ago and didn't spend more then say $1500.00 into and $200 is what the truck cost...

 

My Rebirth to a 98 MJ I have at around $18,000 not including My Labor costs into her and as Always I am not done...

 

If Jeep would get off there arses and build the Gladiator Concept Truck I would have likely just bought a new truck but since they have

not and its not looking good at this point since they have been promising to make it since 2005...

 

When people give the old "why not just buy a new Truck" speech, I tell them to look at it like this " I want a New Jeep Pickup truck and since I can't buy one I have to build one" which usually shuts them

up about it...

 

And as with anything that is a one off its expensive to get it just right with all the test and tune and kinks to work out...

Purchase price of 500. Made about 300 back selling parts off my parts XJ. Add in a battery and a few other odds and ends I'm in to it all for about $500 so far. Planning to stay budget minded and get it on the road for under $1000. Still on the right track

I haven't really added it up but I'm guessing $2000 or less. That includes purchase price of $250, $125 for a parts truck, $100 for my first set of aluminum wheels, $200 for my set of 5 new JK takeoffs, $200 for adapters, $100 for a new clutch, and then money here and there for my AC conversion, p/s conversion, longer brake lines, elec fan conversion, $40 for 11 gallons of NOS Mopar diesel engine oil... Yeah still under $2000. That doesn't include all the free stuff... 235 BFG A/T's, front brake pads, front and rear JK shocks, Procomp adjustable track bar, WJ cooling fan, diff and trans fluids, coolant, Waggy doors fenders and front clip, larger sway bar, Waggy radio, front skid plate, cold air intake.... And whatever else. The only things untouched on it are the engine (long block) and the gas tank. I think I'm doing OK.
