Shout box? Worthwhile or time to go?

More and more I see people, particularly new people, post tech questions and other things directly in the shoutbox. It generally gets ignored. (An example that went straight into shoutbox today: I have a 1991 Jeep Comanche and am trying to solve the braking issue. We have replaced the MC, brake booster, calipers on the front and still has not solve the problem. the problem is that you have to really stand on the brakes to stop quickly. i have been told to replace the proportioning valve under the MC, but the replacements only have one line running to the rear. Is it okay to by pass the rear valve? We plan on installing a lift in the near future. Any thoughts on this...)

 

 

I understand traditional format sites are falling out of favor for facebook-style ones, often on facebook, and the shoutbox looks like the facebook format. Except it doesn't seem to get used or reviewed.

 

Would it be less confusing for people if it just did not exist? I don't know that many would honestly miss it. As is typical the same 3 or 4 guys are responsible for the 3 or 4 posts it gets a day.

honestly, ive never used it. i go straight to the usual forums and check in that way.

I like the Chat feature on this style of forum. I used to use them quite a bit on some local TN sites. That might be more worthwhile if it doesn't cost anymore. Much faster and easier to use than a shout box.

I second this, it'd be pretty cool to talk to some of these guys in real time.

:agree: Although if it's going to stay it needs to be made clear somehow that it isn't a search bar and that you should make a thread for your questions.

Here's what I think... Make it more clear that the SB is not a search.  Make it to where new members that have say, under 50 thread posts, can not even post on the SB until they've made the required amount of posts.  Figured that way, they've been to the site enough to know it's not for searching.  Should pop up a message if they attempt to make a "shout" informing them of its correct usage and why they're unable to post in it yet.

Personally, I like the SB and use it enough to justify its stay on the site.

I would like the shoutbox to disappear. This is a forum, not a chat room. I never look at the SB, I have SB blindness I guess.

I'd pass too. I usually go directly to new content from the get go, so it honestly wouldn't bother me either way..

just limit the SB to a certain number of charactors and that will curtail the major tech questions appearing in it.

I have found alot of CC members on the Facebook MJ pages so typically if I want to talk to someone in real time I do it there.

Every time I see a new post in it, I feel like I must be more important than a typical post.  I don't know why I feel that way.  It never is.

Put it at the bottom of the page. Then the people who care will use it, and it won't be used as a search bar.

 

I don't care about it because it's used as a tech deal and search bar. Would actually use it if i didn't have to sift through the nonsense from clueless people who post to it.

I was curious as to how others felt about it. I also think it takes up prime real estate where it is. I can understand whey especially new people think that it is the place to go as it is so centrally located. Eh. Maybe someone who can do some of these things will look into it.

Never even bother with it. It could be $#!&-canned and I wouldn't care.

I've rarely used it and seldom look at it, so it doesn't matter to me whether it stays or goes.

I  say ditch it and let folks post in Tech, Pub,, or whatever. This isn't Facebook.
