Darren
So it's 9am I'm at a customers house and I'm very hungover. Now that I'm a grownup with a kid of my own I think it's time I stop drinking. Not to mention the fact that my wife has mentioned a few times lately that my drinking has gotten out of hand. So I think its time I put the bottle down, at least for awhile. That's easy to say now when I feel like I'm about to die, but I imagine this is going to be harder than I think, especially since Ben just moved in down the street. Anyone here have any advice for me on my sober adventure? Anyone want to place a bet on how long I'm going to last? I'll keep all you clowns updated on my progress. So is today day one or is day one supposed to start without a hangover?
dasbulliwagen
It would be easy for me to tell you to just not drink, but then again, I myself just don't like it that much. If you do like it, like I assume you do, then its much more difficult than that. All I know from what Ive seen others do in the past, is that you have to want sobriety bad enough to make yourself want to quit. If you don't want it bad enough, it isnt going to work. Your priorities have to be in the right place, and your willpower has to be strong enough to be able to tell you you don't need it. And think of all the money youll not be spending on alcohol that you could put right into your MJ! Though that doesnt always work either... I don't really drink, and I still don't have money for the MJ! And by "don't really drink" I mean I don't drink to get drunk, and I rarely have any beer in the house, and usually if I do, it goes bad before I have the want to drink any. A couple of drinks while out to dinner is all I need or want usually. And no hard stuff....just don't need it. I wish you all the luck in the world with this, and hope you reach your goals. 86FUBAR
Well since iv contemplated this decision once or twice lately mostly since iv just come off a month and a half long binge (3 weddings 3 weekends in a row 2 of which i was the best man plus the batchaler partys and 4 birth days and one clamper meeting ) (clampers is a historical drinking soceity for short) and i was hamered at least 5 out of 7 nights through out so I say yer gona make it to thanks giving as thats when all the family gets together and partys . Me and the wife have had talks about my drinking but thats just how me and my family is and she new this coming in and we both figure as long it dosnt become a real problem that inter fears with work or family then its all good . Now that I'm older (27 years old by the way) with 2 kids i will usualy try and not drink for a couple days after a long weekend or a whatever just to let my body recover and because i know i don't need to drink like a fish all the time . But if you think yer problem is bigger than maby quiting is a good idea but thats up to you . mason
SW86
id say drink to get a buzz then lighten up on knockin em back. just keep that good feeling going without adding on the shots and drinking games  but if you can't control yourself then id just stop all together. Brenda
Darren, This post is a suprise to me. But I kinda agree that it's just because you are hungover. I was thinking about the drinking yesterday again though... and that you have been hungover really bad 2 times within the passed week... :S Well, this is the reason that I don't drink. I hope it's enough for you. I LOVE you. <3Kitten
maddzz1
I say if you like it don't stop. I routinely come home very drunk and have my wife inform me of what happened when i got home (she likes to drink to tho). A few weeks ago I woke up and she asked where my shoes, socks and shirt were; i had no idea. After piecing some things together, I apparently fell down outside the bar and decided to take a shower when i got home and found my clothes in the upstairs bathroom later that afternoon. Geonovast
. So I think its time I put the bottle down, at least for awhile. Kinda pointless if you plan on picking it up again. Same for when I hear people say "I quit smoking for 6 months". Well, then you didn't quit, did you?
terrawombat
I can tell by your tone that you're not serious about it. You'll get through a couple weeks I'm sure, but that's about it. I live with a recovered alcoholic and the steps he had to take to get to where he is now were pretty extreme. He's at the point now where he can be around me and my friends while we are drinking and not feel any temptation. He picked up some hobbies to distract him from wanting to drink and I think it has really helped, not to mention has made our front yard look amazing (his hobby is gardening). I, myself, cannot stop drinking and I'm not even going to pretend like I'm going to quit. I've made "decisions" like yours several times, but it's pointless. I drink to make social situations more comfortable to me, but most of all, I drink because all of my friends do and it's just something that we've always done. Lately, I've been getting to the blackout state of drunkenness, which scares the hell out of me because I really don't know what I'm capable of doing while in that state. From stories I've heard, I'm extremely functional and coherent, but also extremely wreckless. I've set a goal for myself to not get blackout drunk anymore. If I can achieve that, we'll go from there...
Pete M
If you can make it a day, you can make it a week. If you can make it a week, you can make it a month. and if Ben tries to offer you a drink, punch him in the gut. :D
64 Cheyenne
Wow! What a topic. Nearly five years ago I rolled a 99 Wrangler down an embankment, must have went over six or seven times. Yup I was drunk. Did I stop drinking? Hell no! I was like you, thought about it, tried to stay sober for a while.......Then on my birthday, I went barhopping for my free birthday shots. Got a felony DUI. Don't know how many of you know that I am a single parent. The hardest thing that Iv'e ever had to do is tell my daughter that I messed up (she was eight at that time). I had to tell her that I was going to have to go away for a while (jail). Then I had to tell her that It is quite possible that her and I wouldn't be living with each other ever again...... That the home that I put together for us would probably be no more. I had to resign my job, made $82k the last full year that I worked there. My employer wouldn't hold my job for me for when I got back. Then I spent a month in county jails, another month in a 23hr a day lock-down cell at Montana State Prison. Anybody who doesn't mind the pee smell in a bar, this shouldn't bother them..... Then I got to spend the next six months in a state sponsored treatment program, if I didn't want to stay in the program, checking out was always an option. Check out straight to MSP. I cried the first time I seen my daughter from behind glass, couldn't hold her, hug her, show her that I loved her..... I met a lot of decent people in treatment, people who just like me "only thought about drinking or not drinking". A lot of people who's lives were ruined. A lot of people who thought it can't or won't happen to them.(cause a fatality) I think the people who affected me the most, were the ones who through their drinking, had caused a fatality. They thought It wouldn't happen to them. Tell that to a dead persons mother, wife or children. Imagine if your wife or your child was killed due to alcohol. I hated that program, The clinical supervisor said over and over "Just don't drink!" "no matter what, no matter what, no matter what!" If not having to go back to a jailcell that smells like pee (especially MSP), means not drinking. Then I had enough! March will be five full years without a drink. Imagine me working in the C store , the only one in town. Seeing my old co workers who still make mega becks. Talk about humble. I'm fortunate, I could have continued to drink as so many have. But I couldn't do that to my daughter again. I got up dusted myself off and kept trying. Today I'm in my second year of college, 4.0 GPA. I managed to keep my home and my Harley. But most importantly I managed to put things back together for my daughter and I. I think every day that I could lose it all very easily, with just one drink. Do I do the AA thing? No I'm Native American my sobriety lies in practicing my native spiritual ways. Did I cast a vote? Absolutely not! Ultimately were talking about a man, his family and their lives. What are we voting on? whether he lives or dies? Why not make it more interesting and vote on how soon his wife divorces him? Or how soon he gets a DUI or worse (fatality, his or someone close to him) Shame. Spirituality is the key that keeps me sober. I hope and pray that everybody who reads this doesn't ever have to walk the road that I did. It was filled with a lot of hurt, pain and anguish. I thank the Creator every day that I didn't kill someone. Especially my beautiful daughter. Not too often do I type with tears in my eyes..... If anybody would care to talk about this in a good way, PM me, well set up a phone call. PS: That is truly a beautiful baby Brenda. Peace
whowey
Even though I know you are an unrepentant attention seeking lady of the night, the tone in this tells me you won't make it a weekend. In fact you are probably sipping on some cheap crappy beer that comes in 30 packs laughing and thinking you are funny while reading this. If you are so immature, foolish and stupid that you have post something like this when you have a beautiful wife and daughter sitting at home waiting for you to grow up and act like an adult, than nothing anyone posts here will matter one tiny bit to you. I could post stories of people like Chris, Rob, Mike or any of the other PSP's on here spending our nights in the rain, snow, ice, etc. to scrape up the remnants of folks lives, because of a$$holes that decided their party time was more important than acting like an adult. But why should I waste my time reliving them? I could post the times I had to go to a family's home at midnight with the police and a chaplin and tell them that their loved one was never coming home. Explain to me what you have done to earn me living through that pain again? You care so little for your family that you want to live your life in that fashion. That's your choice, but man-up and tell your wife that. She deserves to get to decide how she and your daughter are going to live theirs.
500 MJ
For all the people on here who don't already know, meet "goblazers_6", who we all have come to know as Darren. He likes attention. Don't give it to him. This forum exists for Jeep Comanche Pickups. Other forums and methods of group communication exist for the problem he is claiming to have, he can go there if he wants to help himself. This topic does not belong here. End of discussion. Darren
What happened to Don's post? Anyway, I really appreciate the input and the honesty. A few of the posts made my wife cry. As far as me being an attention lady of the night (I wonder if that will get auto-edited), whether or not that's true, that's not why I posted it. I posted this here because I really like everyone here, even the guys that pretend to not like me. What 64 Cheyenne wrote really hit home. Whowey made a good point also, albeit angry. I've decided to take this a lot more seriously than I had previously planned. This should be good for me, and my family.
Automan2164
...I could post stories of people like Chris, Rob, Mike or any of the other PSP's on here spending our nights in the rain, snow, ice, etc. to scrape up the remnants of folks lives, because of a$$holes that decided their party time was more important than acting like an adult... Last one I was on was 2 drunk guys with a hit and run. They crossed the centerline on a country road and plowed head on into the driverside of a mini-van with a guy just coming home from work. They ran, and their truck became a fireball. The guy in the van had a bi-lateral femur fracture (Broke both thigh bones), a broken arm and was pinned in. (they hit him so hard the dash rolled down onto his legs and pinched him to the floor) We ended up cutting the roof off of his van, and unrolling the dash to get him out. His family showed up halfway through and got to listen to his screams as we pulled the mangled van away from him. But the two drunken idiots were good enough to run away. How fair was that? Darren, I get ya. I know the sense of humor, and feel that the joking manner you posted this with is your way of dealing with a hard situation. But please. You don't need to do that to yourself. How would you feel if you were the one in the truck who head on'ed the minivan? Or if Brenda and your little girl were in that minivan? Could you get that phone call? Would you be willing to sit in a cop car and listen to someones screams because they are in pain that you caused? Would you want to be the reason for a phone call like that? If you are worried about Ben messing you up talk to him and tell him how you feel. If he doesn't understand your need to cut back or drop it completely, he's not a friend worth having. You know the answer to your question. Act on it. Rob L.
james750
It seems that this is on the brink of going off topic. Darren mentioned he has a drinking problem. And everyone has crawled up to discuss how DUI is bad (which I agree with), although Darren never mentioned that he was driving while intoxicated. I see where DUI is related but just because someone has a drinking problem doesn't mean they decide to drive while impaired. Just my 2c. Good luck Darren. Incommando
Ok, so maybe you are a post 'ho without an MJ. I don't know you, so WTH, here goes: You are an addict. You will always be an addict as people who are prone to be addicts will be addicts. You need to replace your addiction with something less destructive. For many, the replacement addiction that works is a 12 step program that becomes a spiratual addiction. Whatever works, you need to find a new addiction. If you were a good man, you might try becoming addicted to being the best dad that you can. Any donor can be a father as conception is a chemical process: try being a dad. It is a hell of a lot of work, but there is nothing like it if you do it right. If you are trolling a subject as serious as this for kicks, I hope karma kicks you square in the manberries. If not, best of luck to you on kicking a life threatening condition.
