Andy in Pa Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 Those of you who have 5spds, do you need to step on the clutch to start your truck? I don't with my truck, just wondering if that is normal.
krustyballer16 Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 Mine doesn't. Sent from my SM-G973U using Tapatalk
eaglescout526 Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 You’re thinking of something that newer cars have. Our trucks don’t have that switch. Course I can start my moms 96 civic without pressing the clutch to engage the switch but it’s like a neutral safety switch but for manual transmissions.
JMO413 Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Mine doesn't. Came in handy when she died in the intersection. Just drive out of it with the starter.

87MJTIM Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 The clutch safety switch was add in the late 90s, long after automatic NSS. The MJ/XJ never had it.

Andy in Pa Posted December 20, 2019 Author Posted December 20, 2019 Awesome, thanks gents!!. Just making sure there isn't something to add to my repair list. Best Regards, Andy
thecodemonk Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 As was stated, this is primarily in newer cars. A lot of newer jeeps (primarily wranglers, but some others might have this too) also purposefully left it so you could use the starter in 4 low while in gear as a feature so that if you stalled in a tricky obstacle, you could start it in gear to help you crawl without having to do crazy stuff with your clutch and potentially get you in a worse situation.
mjeff87 Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 My 02 TJ had a lockout......it was easily bypassed by inserting a 5A fuse in the "trans" slot in the fuseblock, LOL. Both of the Focuses I have (01 and 03) have them too. I had to pull the contact switch connector off and jump them with a short piece of wire to bypass them.
Eagle Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Andy, Mike Giannone (Mike from NJ on NAXJA) had that interlock on his red XJ. I think it came in around '91 or '92
MeanLemons Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 I think the lock out switch was added to the XJ in 1998.

Eagle Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I just received confirmation that Mike from NJ's red XJ, which we saw on many, many NAXJA NAC trail rides, is a '92. It had the clutch/start lockout.
omega_rugal Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 mine is 88 and it doesnt have it ALTHOUGHT there´s a hole to screw one....
