Need help.

Drove to the store and now truck won't start. Have good battery but the starter won't even try to turn over. No click no nothing. Bad starter?

Make sure the pos cableon the starter is tight. Try tapping the starter with a wrench or a hammer something to help unstick the solenoid if that is what it is. Check fuses and relays.

Check the starter relay. I had that happen and one of the wires was barely hanging on to the terminal.

If it started after tapping your starter, then you may be on borrowed time.  Your relay/starter may be on its way out, amigo.  If this is the case, you may have 0-10 more tappings to go before tapping doesn't work anymore.  Get some more detailed testing done soon.

Yep.  That's a sure sign of a starter on it's last legs.  Plan on a swap.  Soon.

Any starter from napa going to do it or is there a good recommended one? Mine is an 88 if it matters

These days, it's a crap shoot.  A NAPA starter has a better chance of being good than one from Autozone.  Find a decent one and swap it.  Chances are it will be good for a long time.  If not, you just have to swap it out again.

Anything from the autoparts store that has a good warranty. You'd be surprised at how often parts literally just have a different box. Same with batteries.

I ran an auto parts store for a short time, was told by the owner we were changing suspension parts from Perfect Circle to Moog and that the Rep. would be bringing my new inventory the next day, I was all beside myself thinking I would have to unload and put away a hole truck of parts, Rep. showed up with one box full of empty boxes, we sat there and reboxed  every part on the shelf.

We did that a while ago at oreillys changing everything from BWD to Standard and Blue Streak lol

waaaaay back in the day my first MJ did that a lot.  99% or the occurrences were just corrosion in the battery cables.  clean the contact surfaces and we're good to go again.  Then I got a gel battery and it never happened again.

^100% this for me as well.  Every few months my Jeeps lose power when turning the key.  Clean the terminals (mostly the ground) and fires right up.  Have had the blue top Optimas in the blue truck for a couple years and not once have had to clean them.

Battery cable. If adjusting the cables doesn't work, check the connectors on the starter relay. They like to come loose on my '89 every now and then, and it will cause a no-crank no-start. If it's a battery cable, a lot of times you'll lose all power after the failed start. That's because the high inrush current draw of the starter broke the already marginal connection between the battery post and the battery cable.

Actually. Of the five available the oldest number that is around is the most expensive at $235 and the newest being at $169. And these are new starters. Not reman. 

 

4.0Ls are lucky. The 2.5L bosch units are like $325 a pop brand new. Course there aren’t any left but at the time. Hell they still are expensive reman.

You may not even need to replace it. My dad’s Chevy had the same issue and fixed it with a screwdriver tap to the starter. Lasted a whole 4 years until he sold it last year; after that it’s unknown. Good preventative maintenance though
