Harley
So the other day I go to Autozone to get a exhaust flange gasket. The guy at the counter pecks away at his computer and then goes in back. When he returns he says they don't have that gasket but says I can make my own and hands me a sheet of #$@%^(*!^ CORK!!! I asked him if he truly was that stupid and then asked if his boss was around so I could punch him in the mouth for hiring him. All the while hes looking at me like a deer in headlights. Needless to say I walked out gasket-less and got one elsewhere........... Anybody else have any exciting trips like that to the parts stores???
Geonovast
I avoid Autozones like a friggin plague.
ComancheKid45
The chain auto parts stores a no different than a walmart.....if you can be taught to operate their computer system theyll hire you. Doesnt matter if you have any knowledge of the products your selling or not....
Minuit
Surprisingly, some employees at my local Auto-Zone actually know what they're talking about. Guess I'm lucky. I guess the general consensus is that most autozones are just awful period?
Harley
Eh its not just autozone. its plenty of other places in this world too. Certain people would just be better off as cheap labor on a farm or something.
MJRemi
So are you saying your Zone Amigo spoke English fluently. As Napoleon Dynamite would say, " Luckee".
HOrnbrod
Hey, at least the dude is working and trying to earn a paycheck. Not unemployed and sponging off Mommy and Daddy and/or drawing welfare.
mnkyboy
I went to O'reillys a couple weeks ago to get a turn signal relay. I walked in and told him I needed a signal relay for LED lights, the guy asked me what it was for,I told him but said it didn't matter because I have LED lights and I needed an electronic one.The guy looked at me like I was retarded and said "they are all electronic" I told him I needed one with a built in relay so it will trip with less load. Again he looks at me like I'm dumb and says "that's what a signal flasher is,they are all relays". I was getting irritated so I just asked him where the flashers are,he pointed down an isle,I walked over and grabbed the right one. As I checked out I tried to show him and explain the difference between thermal mechanical and electronic but the guy was clearly smarter then me and didn't want to listen. neohic
^ This. I love it when this happens. I avoid the O'Reilly's in town just for this reason. Everytime I need to go in there it's like having to do their job for them.
mnkyboy
I try not to go there either,I went to NAPA first and the guy knew exactly what I was after but he was out of them.
jimoshel
My little bro went to the auto parts store. He didn't say which one. Asked for a water pump. The guy looked at him with a straight face and told him that they didn't stock those. He would have to go to a farm and ranch supply store. HOrnbrod
Most all the chain stores have pretty good web sites. Using this, determine the correct part number you need, and come in armed with it. This will avoid having to have the parts drone having to look something up and cause confusion.

terrawombat
Anticipate what will break on your car and stock up on parts at RockAuto. When I put an order into RockAuto, I usually buy random odds and ends and shelve them until I need them. Make your own parts store.
Zenobian_84
Yup. I know how it is. I went into Advance earlier to pick up a differential gasket. Person behind the desk can't figure out how to find the section for differential stuff, so they told me to go home and order it off the website. Sometimes I wonder how these people can hold a job. :thwak:
relyt120
I have a bit of luck at my local advance, they guys there are usually knowledgeable but the autozone people are just asses who act like you are bothering them by asking them to do something that is their job to do. needless to say i don't go there unless i have to. Keyav8r
One of my friends works at my local Advance and he's an old car guy. Has a Nova witha 400 + CI engine, full roll cage, etc. Hunts un-suspecting Mustang GT500's with it. So, if he's not there when I need something I go to the website, order online and pick up at the store.
richasco
The stories from behind the counter are always better. There was a very nice older gentleman who came in every three days for a quart of oil for his van. He would always ask for help pouring it in and I would always tell him that he needed a new engine. He didn't care that there was a softball size hole in the block with part of a rod hanging out. This went on for a month before it finally died. There was the constant stream of younger guys coming in needing brake line conectors for their race cars. They would always want the cheap compression fittings that were marked "Not for brake system use". Not one of them ever wanted the correct connector which requires you to flare the tubing. How can I ever forget the 50 something Chevy guy who swore up and down that his all original Chevelle had a 396. I tried to tell him that he had a 402 but he still demanded the parts for a 396. Cuss at me once shame on you, cuss at me twice you'd better apologize because you will be driving back to the store after you realize I'm right and you bought the wrong part. And no there is no bolt that will screw into that junction block to seal it, and yes you do need rear brakes. There are hundreds more, but just know that there are far more idiots on the front side of the counter.

When I put an order into RockAuto, I usually buy random odds and ends and shelve them until I need them. Make your own parts store. I did that for 20 years when i had my garage. When I sold the garage the purchaser didn't want the parts. I'm to cheap to trash them. I now have two pick up loads of various parts, mostly tune up, for '50,60,70 and some 80's cars. Anybody need a voltage regulator or points, condenser for a '68 Cadillac?
terrawombat
I could probably build my own garage with the number of Wix oil filters I have. Always buy 2 or 3 with every Rock Auto order...
buxmj
I can only imagine how many stories there are from the workers' side. I had an argument with a counter guy, we both thought we were talking to a brick wall. I finally realized he was trying to help me and I was being stubborn, I apologized and did feel stupid but he was cool. That was a Napa. I buy quite a bit at one Auto Zone, they are helpful and knowledgeable, although I will not go into one on a weekend if I can avoid it.
mvusse
my Autozone has a pretty knowledgeable Ford guy and also a Chevy guy. When it comes to Jeeps they assume I know better than they do and if I don't have the part number I need written down with me half the time they turn the computer over to me to find it. If not I look over their shoulder and walk them through step by step until I find the part I need. Pretty funny how a front exhaust pipe for an 87 Comanche 4.0 shows as "not available" but when I started over to check an 87 4.0 Cherokee one came up. They use the same pipe!
