when that happened to me, it was corrosion in the harness connector behind the rear drivers side tire. :(

welcome to the addiction! :) the forums are a bit of a mess right now (in the middle of updating the software), but there's some good reading pinned at the top of the DIY forum. the key pointer I can give you is to be nice to the truck. my first ride was also an MJ (many years ago) and my biggest regret was that I didn't take care of it as well as I should have. you've got a real classic there. treat her well and she'll be good to you. :)

depends on the level of rust. don't forget the little brackets that are under the bed that connect it to the frame. the bar won't save your neck either way, but you might as well get all the bits to make it factory. :)

and check for corrosion in all the sockets.

in theory the software should be able to shrink the size of the photo automatically. might not be happening that way just yet... :(

don't forget the rockers and above the rear tires. those go first.

MJs rot from the inside-out. if order to have any chance of the oil to work, you need to oil inside the entire uniframe, inside the rockers and cab corners, and between the inner and outer bedside (especially right above the rear tires). just spraying the underside does very little to beat salt. :(

I have a shifter (and ax-15) from a wrangler and the knob is reeeeeeeal close to the dash. what trans crossmember did you use?

try a Liberty for a rear axle. my 06 has an 8.25 that has disks and is a couple inches wider than stock MJ (to better mach the MJ's wide butt). ZJ or TJ front axles are commonly found with 3.73.
