The addiction is real take it slow and bring lots of water, both to drink and as emergency if your cooling system needs it. I feel your pain. I once pulled a travel trailer from detroit to atlanta using the KJ in 99* weather in the afternoon with the heater on full blast because the motor's e-fan was broken (I knew it but the diesel always ran cool so I had never bothered to replace it). that was a muggy, hot drive. the first 6 and the last 2 hours weren't so bad and I could even run the AC, but the middle 5 in Tennessee and north Georgia just suuuuuucked. soon after that journey I replaced the fan.

the liberty is still an excellent choice. 03-07 have disks and are a couple inches wider than a stock MJ axle so as to help accommodate the MJ's wide butt. (that's why the tires look pulled-in) Plus I can buy a whole Liberty for the price of an MJ dana 44.

car-part.com can help with junkyard searches. any year MJ/XJ dana 30 front axle will work but the website only searches with part numbers and that changed over the years so you'll want to look for various years. ZJ and TJ axles will also go in but are low pinion if it matters (the last couple years of XJ were also low pinion). another option is to search your local craigslist for a whole XJ that has the correct trans/t-case you need and buy the whole thing. then you would have both axles, the trans/t-case, front driveshaft and the shifter parts. everything but the rear driveshaft (XJs have a shorter wheelbase and thus a too-short rear driveshaft).

I recently watched a PT Cruiser tooling down the freeway with the rear tires bouncing up and down like basketballs and the rear of the car bobbing up and down like a boat so yeah, people can apparently be quite oblivious.

our trucks rot from the inside-out, so just make sure you know what you're getting into by checking for filler in the rockers using a fridge magnet, pulling up the carpets to check the floors, and peering up both in front and behind the rear tire to check the rust propagation inside the bed.

ownership was never a requirement for membership. besides, it's only a matter of time before you're contemplating a track MJ I didn't realize they upgraded the brakes again. once upon a time we had a late 90s Grans Marquis that I eventually swapped out all the brakes (and other stuff) from an '02 in order to get the "big brakes" and eliminate the grandma-mobile ride. I may need to stop by and take yours for a test drive some day.

Problem one: wow, having some weird flashbacks to some of my engineering classes! but it seems like too many of those particular brain cells died years ago. Problem B: I'm guessing the grass gets buffeted around a lot and chances are it'll get nipped by one or the other? how wide is the gap?

all years of MJ doors are essentially the same, as well as 84-96 4dr XJs. plus 97+ can also work with the aforementioned latch changes.

Laredo was indeed top o' the heap. I'm thumbing through my 87 dealership brochure and interestingly enough it doesn't mention a tachometer in the "features" charts, but does show one in a picture of the dash.
