Larger Capacity 4.0L Engine Oil Filters
HOrnbrod replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Also the older metric threaded filters are getting harder to find, are usually costlier, and have limited size and manufacturer options. More win, win, win. -
I quickly read "92" in the original post, but that was for the XJ, not the ZJ. Triple  . So, yes, your 96 ZJ steering gear is the quick ratio box.
-
The ZJ was first introduced in April 1992 as an early 1993 model year vehicle. These early ZJs had the same steering gear as the XJs with the 14:1 ratio. This is according to Jim Shea, a retired Saginaw engineer. All I'm saying is ID the early "92" produced ZJ boxes to make sure they have the quicker ratio if it comes from an early 93 ZJ. But you are right, they were all called 93's so I'll edit my original post.
-
The quick ratio steering gear didn't get fitted to the ZJ's until mid-1993 and lasted through 1998, so an early 93 may or may not be a 12.7:1 box. If the ZJ build date plate indicates a date past manufacturing mid-year 1993 it should be correct, or the steering gear itself may still have the correct alpha code tag attached indicating a 12.7 box. These codes were: AL BT JH KD WK

Need years on Cherokee motor for swap
HOrnbrod replied to pitbull4x4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The 00-01 XJ 53010328 block should work fine. The oil filter mount bosses are different and the filter points down but your old mount will work if it interferes with the starter; it should not. It uses longer main bolts and has the main bearing girdle underneath to stiffen the motor, which is good. Good block for a stroker too. As Tim said it will have the 0331 heads. This was eventually fixed, and you can tell from the casting date if they are the early crap heads or the later "fixed" ones. The left head also has no hole for the gauge temp sender but the boss is there to drill and tap a 1/8 NPT hole. -
Shoot.... broke rear shock stud
HOrnbrod replied to 91Pioneer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you decide to go with a new shock plate, you will have to use one from a late 90-92 MJ. The early 90 and below plates are completely different, and the XJ plates won't work either. See THIS thread. -
Larger Capacity 4.0L Engine Oil Filters

^^ That means HO (91 and up) only, unless you change the goofy Renix metric threaded oil filter adapter, which should be done anyhow. -

Sender / sensor Switch
-
To test the meter movement take a 1.5V AA battery and using wires briefly touch the + and - terminals of the battery to the gauge + and - posts to see if the needle deflects. Then reverse the battery leads and do it again. The meter should deflect in the opposite direction.

What motor oil are you guys using?

wiper switch replacement
HOrnbrod replied to INjake89mj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I do agree, but I wanted to keep my column shift, so swapping the column wasn't an option. I hate working inside a steering column probably more than anything else. Except maybe changing a heater core. :ack: -
wiper switch replacement
HOrnbrod replied to INjake89mj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I did this when I converted to intermittent wipers. You have to go down deep and dirty in the column to change it out. You need the spring plate tool, and the lock cylinder and multifunction switch has to come out too. Getting it out isn't bad, it's the reinstall that's a bear. At least for me it was. I'm no Saginaw column expert and I had a hard time. Like anything else, if you know your way around steering columns it's probably a piece of cake. I'm not ashamed to admit that I don't. But it can be done taking your time especially the "reassemble in reverse order" part. Here's a good step-by-step on Saginaw column dissection: http://www.elcaminocentral.com/showthread.php?t=27192 A new wiper switch will set you back about $50, and make sure you get the right one for your column. There are different switches for tilt/non-tilt columns and intermittent or not. -
There is also a 4:1 configuration; four main leafs + one overload leaf. 3:2 and 4:1 springs are considered metric ton springs and have a higher rated load carrying capacity than the stock 3:1 springs. 3:2 example: Image Not Found

Diesel yes, four doors NOT. That's what the JKU is for.
-
With IGN on, disconnect the oil pressure sender (not switch) wire. The needle should go to high. If not, touch the wire to ground. The needle should go to low. If it does, the sender is bad. If it does not, you have an open circuit from the sender to the gauge.

According to the parts manual, the 91-99 shift cables all have the same part number.

Crankshaft Position Sensor.....?
HOrnbrod replied to rocketwheels's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I had timing marks on the 01 XJ I used to have. Check your engine block casting number. For an 88 it should be 53005535 and it's located on the left side under the front freeze plug. -
Crankshaft Position Sensor.....?

Odd, I've never seen a harmonic balancer w/o the timing mark. Maybe they don't scribe timing marks on the ones made in China. :peek: -
Tj headlight harness upgrade

Sure it will work - good idea too. A standard 30A relay will work just fine. EDIT: It looks like Chrysler started using a blower motor relay on the 1994 XJs and up. 93 and below had no relay. The relay coil is triggered by ignition-switched 12V and the load contacts are tied to the blower hot lead. I'm going to do this.........

HOrnbrod replied to big66440's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Rotella is good, but I prefer Chevron Delo 400 LE 15w40. Year round. It meets the API classification SM for older engines, and still has a minimum 1300 ppm zinc count, unlike Rotella ~1100 ppm, and is the only off-the-shelf motor oil I know of one of the few motor oils that still do. It's also approved by the manufacturer for both gas and diesel engines. The higher zinc content is beneficial for our flat tappet 4.0 engines, whether during cam break-in or maintaining longevity because it reduces the metal-to-metal friction no matter what the age/mileage. Chevron Delo 400 is a diesel spec motor oil and I've been using it for years in my Jeeps, but especially in the stroker with a mild cam. -
Are these the belts I need?

Edit your signature in the "My Settings" drop-down menu to reflect what year, model, engine, etc. etc. your truck is.
