Now you have something to do when your WiFi is out next.

Not when it's below freezing in the garage. I'm too old for that.

I forgot you are up in the north too. For some reason I was thinking you were down south.

Follow up question...

What’s the turn off for those who say that they could never live in a small house?

Posted

I like to get away from others and distractions (TV).  Not that I don't love my wife; I just like to have a quiet room that I can sit and read.

Additionally, in winter months and rainy days I get stir crazy inside the same four walls.  A bigger house allows me to get a new perspective in the same house.

But that's just me, others may feel different.

I'm not saying I couldn't do it, but I have a lot of stuff.  Yes, some if it I could throw away and never miss, but a lot of its serves a purpose.  A lot of it goes towards making me self sufficient, and I would lose that capability if I was to give it up for a smaller space.

I also like it when my friends and relatives come to visit.  I have room for a couple to have a place to sleep with some privacy and their own bathroom.  Wouldn't have that with a smaller place.

I like doing my laundry whenever I feel like it. Do these small places have washers/dryers?

There's nowhere near enough room for stuff.

I have enough XJ/MJ parts in my basement crawlspace and garages to fill a typical tiny house. Heck, my two roll-around tool chests would pretty well do it even without the parts.

And I haven't even gotten to the carpentry tools, the plumbing tools, the electrical tools, the drill press, the lathe, the welder ...

Tiny houses are for people who only live virtual lives. They're not for people who do any actual work, like with their hands.

^This, Jeep and other mechanical^ parts and tools fill my basement.

Wood splitter, chainsaws, snow blower engine stands, engine hoist, jack stands, jacks, leaf blower, table saw, miter saw. 44” tool cart and chest, torch cart, generators, appliance dolly, hand truck, work benches, vise stand, 20 ton press. Plus plus plus.....,,

Right now for me it's resale value.  I need to be able to sell this place when I retire.  It needs to be big enough for that.

For my retirement place I need a modest bedroom, guest room, office, kitchen, dining room, laundry/2nd bath, and a medium size living room.  Plus shop.  Enough room for me and a couple of guests.

If I had family living with me I'd need enough space for family members to have privacy, especially me.  The total space would depend on how much family.

An apartment is essentially a tiny home, just in the same building as a bunch of other tiny homes, and billions of people around the world make that work. Lots of apartments have their own laundry.

When it comes down to it, the actual space I use for living really doesn’t need to be very big at all. It would be different if I had kids around I’m sure, but really all I do in my house is eat, poop, sleep, and browse the internet. Most of the things I do with my hands aren’t things I necessarily want happening in the same space as where I eat. All that happens outside the house. As nice as it might be, I can’t exactly swap an engine in my living room, no matter how big it is.
But yes, I can’t quite imagine a tiny home without outbuildings. Shed and garage space. Unless you live somewhere it’s feasible (and affordable) to rent out such space as necessary. Storage units, DIY garage, that sort of thing. And sure, it’s possible to have that sort of thing built into your house, but attached garages come with their own set of building code requirements compared to a detached one, and a shed is almost always a free-for-all. Surmountable obstacles, sure. But it’s much easier to build and expand your garage when it’s not snuggled up to your house.

You guys may be a bad influence. Got me looking at stuff again.

900 square feet dripping with frontier vibe on a half-acre lot tucked away in the foothills. There’s a 12x15 shed, a 15x24 garage, an additional “bunkhouse” on the lot (no interior photos of it, it just looks like a narrow shed), all much newer than the house. Also an included 28’ RV that I suspect indicates the current livability of the house. As cool as this piece of history is, it’s still a piece of history and will come with the associated problems. Even though it’s on this side of the Divide, it’s still slightly further from work than reasonable commuting distanceand it needs a new windbreak planted. Not quite the dream cabin in the woods given previous occupants have seen fit to remove the woods, but might not make for the worst start to a humble empire of dirt. Maybe if it’s still for sale come summer it might warrant a closer look. 100-year-old log home can’t be much worse than a 30-year-old truck, can it?

Currently building out a shed house for the mother-in-law and a shed to kennel for the sister-in-law.  I will post pictures once I get some.

you can get a stacked washer/dryer that fits in a tiny closet :L:

Sure, I'm aware of that.  And I grew up with the weekly trip to the laundromat.  But do most of these small homes actually have them?

Really depends on the size and the layout. My 478 sq ft house has all full size appliances except for an 18” dishwasher.

This is wildly incorrect and you’re painting with broad strokes. There’s plenty of people out there who use living in a small dwelling as a way of supporting other things that are important to them. With the lack of a giant house payment, I comfortably built my shop without any additional loans. Another example I’ve seen is renting or buying a work space and parking a tiny house in it.

there are millions of people who are living in small apartments and doing just fine.  :D  a tiny house is similar but means you don't have neighbors stomping around on your ceiling.

I wouldn’t mind a house around 400sqft or so. Growing up in the suburbs has made me really value having my own property though. I don’t want to live where I can jump onto my neighbor’s roof from my own and almost touch both houses when I stand between them. 😂 Ideally I want a nice little house on a chunk of land with a large shop/garage and room for my dogs to run.

I'd want a small cabin like house on a lot of land, with a great view. Have a big shop for the hobbies and then my wife and I could go hunting any time, kids too. Big dream of mine.

Biggest problem? Small kitchens suck. Although my current kitchen probably has less counter space than a tiny home... The 70s was a weird time...

efficient use of cubic space matters indeed. i enjoy lots of pockets and utilizing space in a way that makes the most sense for what i need when i need it. i create whatever space i need with whatever space i can. but sometimes i just space......:smokin:

Tiny kitchens suck.  I do need some real counter space and cabinets for a few things.  I also need real appliances including a dishwasher.  I've lived in apartments with basically no counter space and it was "less than ideal".

I can deal with I guess "medium" kitchens for myself.  I have all of the basics when it comes to kitchen tools but not a lot more.  I don't do big meals for lots of people and I almost never bake.  So enough room to get something productive done is all I need.

A tiny house with basically a galley kitchen isn't enough.

I have a galley kitchen... It is... Well... Absolutely awful... Plan is to knock down the wall to the "dining room" and build out a real kitchen at some point.
