Updates are coming to the Comanche Club, what all would you like to see?

which improvements are you just dying for?  (obviously photo hosting, but what else? :D )  Something needs to happen to keep us current and updated so while the mods and I are discussing what should and what can happen (and what it's going to cost :ack: ), i figure it's time to bring y'all into the discussion.

what say you?

Pete,

Clearly photo hosting is number 1 for the long term.  Would think it should not allow 3rd party hosting on other sites.  That will drive up non Comanche Club traffic and suck a good bit of band width.

Next, a better search function.  Maybe it is just me, but I don't know how to search within a group of search results.  Trying to say,how to "refine" the search results.

I am willing to share the costs to pay for the work to be done so it is not a burden for you or the mods.  Other members need to step forward to share the cost burden also.

I would like to see some improvements on the mobile side of things. Most notably showing signatures so us using the mobile website can see what vehicles users are talking about.

I've also been very confused about there being a "Comanches" folder inside the "Comanche Club Forums" folder. Was there originally a plan to have sections for other Jeep models? This is most noticeable when using Tapatalk as you have to click "Comanche Club" click "forums" then click the "Comanches" folder to see the main forum page.

I love not having to see signatures on the mobile app, on the website I have the signatures turned off and it's made my viewing experince much better

Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Maybe an option to turn signatures on/off on mobile? Or some small text under the person's name to show a pop-up type thing with their information including the signature?

If you can help out with the pic situation, that would be great.

Otherwise, as they say, 'if it works, don't break it'.

Agreed.

and that is the ultimate coin flip.  I've tried my darnedest to keep this place as simple and cheep as possible, but that philosophy has caused a plethora of headaches over the years (loss of photos, repeatedly hitting the storage or bandwidth caps, having to delete spammers one at a time, that one time we were outright hacked, etc).  :(

It's time to at least explore what the alternatives are and what it'll cost.  competing with the newer social media is only going to get harder.

Security and photo hosting (and maybe doing something about these Russian porn spam bots) are all I want. Anything else is just icing on the cake. I hope you don't plan on going full on social media.

.

A Google custom search can be embedded.  It's fairly common on more recently birthed forums.

I want a button to turn off Hornbrod's anti-Renix posts! :teehee:

Nah, a better search and photo hosting would be good...

  • A little faster would be nice. Sometimes the speed is okay, but at certain times I have to just give up and come back later.

Better search

I find the edit window very frustrating. It works okay to create a new, blank post but, when quoting someone else's post, it's very difficult to delete PART of the quoted post without either losing it all, or getting shut out of the area to insert my own new post.

Maybe a couple of optional "skins"? Web sites and forums these days all seem to default to a pale, pastel colour scheme, which for those of us with aging  eyes (combined -- in my case -- with red-green colour blindness) is often very difficult to read.

A negative contrast skin is a good idea.  IE, JKowners and Pirate4x4.  Much easier to read for most people.

it looks like, all-in, to upgrade to a system that includes photo hosting and other goodies it'll be about $150 a year (most likely) and as much as $300 (all depends on the variables of the photo-hosting aspect).  we get our own server and automatic backups for it too! :D

more details coming...

That's not a bad price at all imo. I think we should do more events throughout the year to raise money for the club. Like Shelbyluvv's bumper raffle for example. Great idea and will help everyone in the long run.

If everyone pitches in $10 or $15................you'll be covered.

Sounds very much cheaper than a single PhotoBucket ransom!!

I'm in for a few $$$$......even though I don't have an MJ any more, I still lurk this place (almost) daily.

I like you guys (and girls) :), and I like the demeanor of this board.

You've brought us a LOOOONNNG way from the Yahoo, Pete

Perhaps expanding upon the "MJ Tech" section. sub forums for "trouble shooting / general maintenance", "modified tech talk"  "engine swaps" and a sub category for "97+ swap"

That's not a bad idea.  It also makes the limited search function a little more useful (eventually, once enough new content is added).

Moderators will have to expect to move threads fairly often.  But that's part of the job. :rotfl2:

Just don't make too many subforums that it becomes overwhelming.

This is a good idea but do we really see that many varying topics? I feel that the subforums for the more uncommon things like "engine swaps" are less likely to be seen by the vast majority, and the less you have to click around, the better the experience imo. I don't feel like the tech section moves all that quickly.

Subforums would make searching a lot easier however.

Some guys don't care to read or answer the basic maintenance questions, but are more than happy to muse about things like axle or engine swaps.  IMHO they tend to then pick a subforum or two and spend a bunch of time in it, and actually provide more content then if they just take a quick look in the tech and see nothing they feel like reading and move on to only return a few days later.  But, yeah, it's a matter of finding the right balance.

Some places split it as stock tech, and modified tech, which is generally a decent balance.  Other places add a body/paint/interior section beyond that.  And others an electrical.  The problem then is if a guy has something like a 97+ question, what section does it go into?  It's modified tech, but using stock parts, and it also affects the body/paint/interior, and the electrical system if he's really going all out.  So you have to be careful what you choose for subforums, and make appropriate ones for the more common niches, or at least put a note as to where such questions should mostly go.

One thing I will point out with the way the sub-subforums are displayed currently (such as the "Popular threads" one in The Pub) is that they get little traffic as they are not accessible from the main forum directory.  Also, with it being up near the header by itself, which is a somewhat uncommon thing in modern forums, some people will skim past it while scrolling to the actual subforum.  I do this, I think I've clicked on that sub-subforum only 100 times or so total in all the years I've been here.

Personally I think tech could be split to a few more subforums, as long as it was done right.  Then sticky some decent posts that cover the most repetitive of questions in each...
