zackcj7
Has anyone used one of the U-Haul car hauler trailers to tow an MJ? More specifically a longbed with 31 x 10.50s. Will it fit? I need to move my MJ to a friends house while my house is up for sale. My MJ is not registered or insured currently so driving it is not an option. relyt120
Ive used them to haul my SWB a few times and it worked well. I don't see why the lwb would have any issues.
shelbyluvv
I have towed both my long and short beds on both transporters and dollys. They fit fne on either one.
yellaheep
Yeah, the MJ will fit fine on a U-haul trailer. My only issue has been U-haul's rediculous requirements for what the tow vehicle has to be in order to tow what's on the trailer. Don't be surprised that they tell you you need a 1-ton truck to haul that longbed MJ on one of their trailers......even though a half ton is sufficient. They won't rent it to you if you don't have the minimum tow vehicle there to take the trailer....... If you have a half ton tow vehicle, tell them you're hauling a VW bug. johnj92131
Quite sure U-Haul has been sued because of stupid customers doing stupid unsafe things with rented equipment. So they, U-Haul, has what we call a stupid policy, because U-Haul has the deep pockets and insurance to pay. I rented a U-Haul enclosed trailer a couple of months ago (with the Comanche) and had to jump thru a couple of hoops inorder to get it. All in the name of legal protection for U-Haul. So yes, as yellaheap said, under state the amount of weight you are going to tow. Do tell them it is a VW Bug.
87Warrior
It will fit. The bed will hang over the back of the trailer deck. U-haul never mined I was pulling an MJ with a Chevy 1500, both times. 31" tires are at the limit of the tire straps.

Tow vehicle is a F250 4x4 with a 7.5L. Surely that will meet the requirements.
gogmorgo
UHaul goes by Jeep's MJ weights, which are a bit... optimistic. I know for a fact that my lwb MJ weighs more than the dolly's max load rating in the literature they gave me, but the dolly took it fine. I suppose that's safety factors are for... Brickmiata
Two months ago, I rented a uhaul car trailer to tow my lwb from buffalo to MA. The tow vehicle was a gmc 1500 with a class 4 hitch and they were perfectly happy with that. I always bring some straps and tools of my own when using their trailers. Never had a problem with the trailers but I'd rather have what I need for a roadside fix than sit on the side of I-90 for 3hrs waiting for some uhaul certified goof to come fix something. Brickmiata
BTW, curb weight of a stock vw bug is about the same as a stock Comanche (3k)... If you wanted to make an actual difference, tell them its a triumph or a Miata (2k)

jimoshel
Awhile back I purchased a U_Haul car trailer at one of their used equipment auctions for $450. Best buy I ever made. Only thing I haven't hauled on it so far is a military deuce and half.

jimoshel
Don't know how many times I've been told that. It's sitting in my yard with valid plate on it and I've got the title. Anytime anybody wants to take a look at them.
nitroxsteve
It will fit no problem. You can go to the u haul site and put the tow vecicle and towed vehicle in and it will tell you if it is compatible. I had trouble once because the guy at the store was putting the info in the wrong spots. It would not allow me to tow a extended cab 4x4 1500 chevy with a Comanche and I don't blame them for that. But after I figured out what he was doing wrong everything was good.
Incommando
I have one of their old 4x5 utility trailers. EDIT: Ooops. Not a U-haul. It has A-1 Rentals welded into the fender brace.
Keyav8r
Towed my 91 SWB from Pensacola, FL to Trussville, AL on a U-Haul car trailer behind my 05 Silverado 1500 crew cab with absolutely no problems. Don't remember the guy asking many questions other than about my hitch and trailer wiring. And thanks, again, to Hornbrod for posting Rich's ad and thanks to Rich for the fine work before I bought it. I love my truck
Jeep Driver
Don't know how many times I've been told that. It's sitting in my yard with valid plate on it and I've got the title. Anytime anybody wants to take a look at them. I worked for Uhaul many many years ago. The first time I saw a Uhaul auto transport trailer on the side of the road with a 4sale sign on it I called Uhaul to report it stolen, they told me the ONLY trailer that has ever been sold by them was the car trailer. They are sold and yours is legit.
xjrev10
Yes they sell their auto transports. That's it tho. No enclosed trailers.. The straps might fit over 31/10.50 and might not. I've seen it both ways!
mvusse
When my camper had a Class II hitch behind it I towed my short bed on one of their dollies which according to their calculations was just barely below the 3500 pound hitch limit. I have my own trailer now (and a class IV hitch), so no more u-haul. I believe 89 eliminator hauled hist to an offroad park on a u haul trailer once. Don't know how he fastened it since he sat on 33" tires, or maybe he'd already moved up to 35s by then.
xjrev10
I've used my own Mac's straps with u-haul trailers. Gotta get a little creative. I also hauled a XJ back to MN from WY and removed the front tires (31s) and installed stock OE size from the junkyard to be able to use u haul straps. dancome433
Not a Comanche, but I towed my Cherokee on 31s with my dads f150, didnt have any issues with tow requirement. If I ever doubt the tow requirement, I just go onto their website and check to see if they'll allow it or not. Now I will say I was barely able to tie down the 31s, but I was able to do it safely. The person at Uhaul just told me if the straps didnt work I would have to provide my own.
rmoore1031
I towed a SWB Comanche on a u haul auto transport trailer. The Comanche had 31s and the bed was loaded with stuff. Used a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer V8 from Upstate NY to Central NJ. Went through the mountaints with no problem. I'm sure I could find pics from then. It was istaywikkid's Comanche that was being towed. The straps barely fit the 31s, almost had to air down the tires.
shelbyluvv
When I drug Onyx home the straps would not fit over the tires. I have had this issue a few times. I just run the strap over the axle and tighten them up. Never had an issue. It holds them better and they can't slip over the tire or come completely off as the tires go flat either. http://comancheclub.com/topic/11232-project-onyx/?p=232349
