  1. If you have 2 different ratios that are real close, you want the numerically smaller number (higher ratio) in front so it PULLS you around the corner. IH did that before there were differentiated tcases. Matching ratios tend to push you straight forward with the wheels turned (as I found out with the '68 Travelall I have)
  2. There should be a tag on the back ID'ing the case. The motor was also used in Mini Winnebago Le Sharos. If you crawl under, make sure the starter isn't coming loose and the rear brace for the starter is attached or it WILL snap the mounting ear off the trans!
  3. Selectrac was available in MJs in '86 only. Someone else on here has one. Also it was only available with automatic. If it's last '86 it's possibly NP231 but unlikely. Did they use the AX4/5 or BA 10/5 with the diesel? If it was mine, I would switch to a 21 spline AW4 (if that's what the trans is) or get a Jeep NP208 and swap in a 21 spline gear. They were built for V8 power and have 2.72 low range.
  4. I recently replaced my fuel filter and discovered the old one was slowing the fuel pressure buildup and causing longer cranking to start.
  5. First check should be the ground at the block (like Cruiser54 said) and the battery posts cleaned and all grey paste removed. If the wires are green, time to replace.
  6. Can do! /hijack Here's my black Fey bumper (I have a spare mounting set in the parts for sale) 3500 lb tow capacity Good enough to tow this SX4 from almost the CA border to Seattle.
  7. Nice! I just sold my last Mopar big block I'll probably ever have (440/727 Loadflite from a motorhome) I sold my '68 Sport Fury that I had since high school ('76) in '98 and my uncle had since new. Sure don't miss the "economy" of the dual 4 bbls though! (same setup, but some one else's pic. Mine was a 383 Golden Comamander) The sport models came with a flat black hood for racing so the sun reflection didn't blind you when you lifted the front wheels.
  8. welcome and where are you?
  9. Just a note, but the ratios for the AW4 are off slightly. '87 to 08/90 (21 spline) are .705 and the 23 spline '91 up are .753 due to the HO making it's power at a higher RPM.
  10. If it's TBI, it looks the same back to '86. If it's MPFI, it's the same as 4.0L but with a smaller bore. 4.0L TB fits the MPFI 4 cyl to make more power but it makes a nasty whistle!
  11. nothing was done on our end That's strange. I got notification of the new post and when I came to the thread it shows I have no posts, yet I am subscribed to it? How does that happen? I mean unless I subscribe, which I didn't do? I got this when I just posted this too: Sorry, you don't have permission for that! 12. No you didn't, but you did say it needed a yoke, leaving open to interpretation it was a bolt in otherwise. There are those reading that don't know better (yet) I have an XJ 3.73 D35 under my Comanche that I cut and moved the spring mounts inboard 1 1/2" each side (3 inches difference overall from XJ to MJ)
  13. '80 to '86 FSJs had a Model 20 rear and D44 front. D44 rear didn't come back till mid '88 (as Chrysler was taking over)
  14. YJ are leaf spring, so someone did a lot of work to it.
  15. That looks like the setup on my Comanche. Frowny face and not smiley. The plate is attached to the trans mount and not the crossbar on mine. http://comancheclub.com/topic/41384-exhaust/?p=421749
  16. This one looks like a frowny face to me (original, stock exhaust)
  17. If they are at all rusty, don't reuse!
  18. I don't see how the rear axle can be bent enough to be visible and still move?
  19. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOYOTA-LANDCRUISER-DIESEL-ENGINE-5-SPEED-CONVERSION-SET-/201018856282?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ecda8535a&vxp=mtr Trans is a version of the AX-15.
  20. That Fey is the same as mine except mine is black and not chrome. I thought I posted a pic link? Edit: I did post a pic and someone erased it?
  21. If you unhook the IAC, it won't open to allow air when you stop to keep it from stalling.
  22. You'll also need spring pads
  23. I had water in my fuel pump relay do that too.
  24. That is correct. Right up to '78 IIRC. As for the 5 speeds backwards, take the rear diff out and flip it upside down and put it back in. Plug the breather holes and drill a new one on "top" and you end up with a SOA as a bonus! WIN WIN! When I was in my late teens I did that with my '66 Nova. Since it was 6 cyl and powerglide I had 2 reverse and one forwards that sounded like I had a supercharger. We laughed and drove it to town and back (speedo didn't work of course going forwards) I was awesome at reverse driving (we used to figure 8 race in reverse) and "re-enacted" the Hooper scene.
  25. If the head is still off, it won't start..... just sayin!
