  1. I have issues unlocking the doors in the cold as well. As crazy as it sounds you might try warming up the lock cylinder with a hair dryer for a good 5-10 min and try again. I haven't ever dug into exactly what hangs up in the cold but it ONLY happens in the cold so obviously nothing is flat out broken... good luck! Be gentle.
  2. Sure am, same username.
  3. Very nice! The AHU is the older one with the stamped sump and such right? 1Z? Are we the only two on this board riding the TDi bandwagon?
  4. Over the last couple of years I've gone back and forth in my head about a hundred times; TDi? 4.8LS? 318? MegaSquirt-ed 4.0? But last week I stumbled upon a local deal I couldn't refuse and took the bait. My mind has been made up for me! Its a 2000 Jetta TDi with the ALH engine. At almost 400k on the clock the engine will definitely need gone through, but it runs and drives. I'll be pulling all the necessary parts here soon but I won't likely see any swap progress for a long time. This is the swap part supplier I'm considering. Oh well, I'm still excited!
  5. Well, in a year's time I've gone back and forth in my head about a hundred times; TDi? 4.8LS? 318? MegaSquirt-ed 4.0? But last week I stumbled upon a local deal I couldn't refuse and took the bait. My mind has been made up for me! Its a 2000 Jetta GL with the ALH engine. At almost 400k on the clock the engine will definitely need gone through, but it runs and drives. I'll be pulling all the necessary parts here soon but I won't likely see any swap progress for a long time. Oh well, I'm still excited! . :MJ 1: .
  6. Trial-run update: The Travellall project has gone into low range since the last update, but there's a few things I've learned and will be sure to apply when its the MJs turn; thought I'd share. Interior fuse block: I decided to refurbish the factory GM fuse block out of our '02 Camaro engine donor. Nearly all GM stuff from the early 2000s uses the same Delphi metri-pack 280 series stuff as our aftermarket block (the un-sealed version in this case) and it has a bunch of spots for fuses and relays with the added bonus of 4 bussed Maxi fuses! I also riveted on some standard relay bases I had laying around to accommodate some of the other stuff we already had. These and similar fuse blocks are everywhere in salvage yards and almost every single terminal is available. Download the Delphi Connections Systems .pdf catalog, pour yourself a drink, find your terminals, and you'll have one more piece of a factory-clean chassis harness
  7. I'm gonna have to try those Ford shackles out. For the price they can't be beat.
  8. Hate to bump the thread without any official progress to show, but I wanted to assure everybody that the project is not dead! The SOA conversion is fast approaching and I'll be working on the springs again here soon.. I've decided to re-blast the leaves, apply a primer, coat this product on the friction surfaces, and then spray bomb black over it all: Tech support at this place was super helpful. The product is supposed to repel water and apparently they've had a fair number of customers using it for leaf springs. Here goes :crossfingers:
  9. I've been eyeballing these since he introduced them. Any pictures during the install? My rockers are finally, um, air-permeable :ack:
  10. is there a difference between the columns assuming both a floor shift? I would assume it has to do with that little lever you have to depress when you want to take the key out. I've got another column up in the attic that has the Chrysler lock cylinder in it. Anyone know if I can mix and match locks between that and the older GM-keyed ones?
  11. Lol, still on the bench. I've got an identical one ready to install under the other cabinet. This isn't a 4.0, its a Ford 300.
  12. Leftover fence pickets, 1/8" bar stock bent up, welded and viola! Though I'd share.
  13. What are the conversion mounts for?
  14. This has me thinking about a 318/360 swap... beautiful build.
  15. The switch was actually installed during my latest radiator change but I kept the box. I have yet to get a connector for it, and the switch points are definitely an experiment, but we'll see.
  16. A-man, interested in that switch...Any more specific information about what year/model VW it came from? I'll pull it out of the attic tomorrow. I found it the really, really long way (by thread pitch and temp switch points) using various online catalogs and then figured out what applications it fit then bought it. Now I'm really wanting to try it out.
  17. I picked up a fan switch for a Volkswagen of some kind a while back that will thread into the stock Jeep radiator. It has two switch points in it that correspond pretty close to when our stock auxiliary fan comes on. I had hopes of setting up a dual electric fan arrangement. Have yet to try it :/
  18. This has been on my to-do list for quite a while. Grab a couple of doors from a jy and start comparing.
  19. Ok so I might eat my words here... In this scenario: driving in a straight line, np231, numerically lower front diff, equal tire sizes, transfer case putting up with this abuse, and superior tire traction on the front. The truck would be dragged by the front diff, which due to the 50/50 split in the t-case, would impede the speed the rear propshaft wants to turn. IF one of the tires achieved greater traction than the other then you have a scenario similar to what gogmorgo described (dragging a vehicle in park). I stand corrected. I love this forum!
  20. I think its safe to say that the OP does indeed have different ratios front vs. rear. Pop the covers and start countin'! Let us know what you find. In the meantime I'm gonna stop arguing theoretical stuff here since I've never actually witnessed this scenario in person and we don't even know if the guy is describing a phenomenon he's observing with the car in the air or driving, straight line or in a turn, gravel or pavement, etc.
  21. Had 3.07s in the front and 3.54s in the rear for a year or so and might have put her in 4wd a time or two... No. Would one axle turn slower? sure. But not backwards.
  22. Let's be clear about something: mismatched gear ratios would not, in any universe, cause one wheel to turn backwards in relation to the others. Your initial post: "skids along" implies you're observing this while driving. But your other post: Implies you're looking at it on a lift with the wheels off the ground... With an open diff you can't count on the left and right side wheels to be rotating at the same speeds. As mentioned, things like brake drag will influence what you see. Not recommending this, but I've personally used my hands to stop one wheel of an open diff hanging on a lift above my head at 40+mph. Does the truck drive in 4wd ok if you drive in a straight line on dry pavement? or does it buck and pop at you?
  23. Lol, don't take it too hard man. Not to be cheesy, but this is how you learn (ok, maybe it's the expensive way, but still). Props to you for having the adventurous spirit, don't give up.
  24. You're doing this with the wheels in the air aren't you?
