Talk me out of buying this:

Pros:

'92 2-door 4.0 ax15 4x4

Guy wants $900.

Would be a great donor for an ax-15 swap in the MJ, eventually. Swap the MJ's aw4 back into this, and sell it (still have the driveshafts from my aw4 parts XJ, so that's a no brainer.

Would be good for practicing rust repair and/or paint and/or body work.

Cons:

Has "the usual rust"

Seller didn't list mileage

It's 130 miles away from me (but only 60 from my parents')

I really don't need a third project vehicle.

My money is better allocated to other things right now

My landlords/roommates don't much care for me accumulating more vehicles here...

It's one of those situations where I probably shouldn't buy it but really want to. Don't know when another might come up for an ax-15 donor. I think I'll wait till tomorrow afternoon before calling the guy. The trouble is if I go see it and there's nothing majorly wrong with the drivetrain I can pretty well guarantee it's coming home with me.

Yup I have 98, 91,and 92 2dr XJs, They kind of rare, any of the 2dr side glass, doors etc are body specific gonna be hard to find some day, if not already. I'm planning on building a 2dr family rig cause I like the uniqueness of it and I have a spare 2dr for parts. I suggest don't buy it, you'll never be able to get your money back out of it and you'll hate it (kidding), next thing you'll buy another for parts later, then this other one comes along....then you find another MJ for $300 then.....JustEmptyEveryPocket

I don't find 2drs to be that rare.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but it seems they all came with manual transmissions.  Which is why I wound up build a 4dr XJ this last go around.

The body cracks worse on them than 4drs.  It's not as rigid.

It's probably worth $500-900 in that shape.  I paid $500 for the last 2dr I bought.  $100 for the last 4dr.  There was some cherry 2drs for $1500-2000 (asking) when I went looking for another XJ.

Isn't the subframe the same on 2dr and 4dr xj's?

Yes. There is some differences in the floor. The body isn't as rigid though, the B pillar location on the 4dr is better for that. The door hinges and strikers really like to crack, and around the vents in the door opening. Not a big deal but its something to look for.

The bigger heavier door that uses the same hardware as the 4-DR XJ has a lot to do with the stress cracks.

He is doing you a favor!.  No way you need the project.  The thing is a rusted out hulk.   The interior is trash.  The engine has a bad knock.  The tires are flat spotted and rotten.  What more do you need to know?  Oh - and he wants U.S. dollars - not those little Canadian dollars.  Lastly, you parents don't want you storing junk cars at their house.

How is that for help?

And at True Story of what I did today:

Yes, and Today - I spent $1500 buying an old car 350 miles from home and have not told my better half yet.  I don't quite know where I am going to store it when I get it home.  And I don't know what kind of story I am going to tell her when I go back to pick the car up!

So don't be a dummy like me.  You will get in all kinds of trouble at home - if not today, next week and next month.!  Really, you don't need another old car.

Well he called me back just now.

It's got just over 300,000 km on it. He's had it for 15 years and I guess he's replaced the rockers once but they're rusting out again, as are the floor pans, and maybe some other stuff. Apparently everything else is good, in and out. But he's a farmer, and never registered it, and I'm not positive he's got papers.

So of course I'm going to go look at it tomorrow. :D

Sigh.
