What did ya buy John?

1968 Chevrolet Corvair  4 speed 140 hp engine.   First new car I purchased was a 69 Corvair.

Very cool! Pics when you can.

Well he called me back just now.

It's got just over 300,000 km on it. He's had it for 15 years and I guess he's replaced the rockers once but they're rusting out again, as are the floor pans, and maybe some other stuff. Apparently everything else is good, in and out. But he's a farmer, and never registered it, and I'm not positive he's got papers.

So of course I'm going to go look at it tomorrow. :D

Sigh.

Sounds like it's worth $100-200... I hate buying stuff without papers.

The floorpans are shot, in that classic spot on the, just outside the frame. Driver's side rocker wasn't awful but the passenger side is crumbling. It runs great, shifts good, brakes are decent. A/C doesn't work but that's not a big surprise. It's reasonably clean inside, didn't smell awful. It's got a bit of a vibration out on the road, but nothing too severe.

Turns out he did have papers, he just let the insurance lapse a few years ago. He's an older British guy, started telling me stories about his daughter's band, and taking the Jeep to gigs. Seemed like he didn't really want to sell it.

Also, I'm an idiot.

WOW!

That looks like a great deal!  Interior look really good!

No, you are not an idiot.  But you may soon be single again!  Hey, lots and lots of ladies out there.  Not that may good Jeeps.  Darn, I sure am brave when I know she is not looking!.

She is calling me to do the dishes - got to go now.

Sadly this would not be an again. It might just prolong it a little more...

I wound up offering $700, and he accepted. I was going to offer 500, but he had started talking about talking his daughters driving it when he first got it and looking all nostalgic so I figured if I wanted out of there with the XJ I should do it quickly.

@#$% @#$% @#$% @#$% @#$% no.

Why did you have to show that to me? Actually I think I remember that one (or one very similar) coming up for sale a couple years back, but it needed more work than I was willing (or probably able at the time) to get it running. Also I'm really not all that close, at least it's more than an afternoon trip. But I will be in Wpg at the end of the month...

You bastard.
