Butt weld. Forget the overlap idea I have tried that on MJs before. You will end up trapping moisture between the 2 pieces and simply continuing the rust cycle. Butt welding isn't that hard. There are some great tips and tricks that can be learned online for free that will help you a bunch. Let me finish this by saying, I am not a body guy by any means. I have just attempeted several methods of metal repair previously and can tell you what won't work.

eaglescout526 do you have any pics that will show the vacuum harness layout for the cruise? I think I have all my parts collected but I have done some head scratching over the vacuum harness.

Is the top one the connector for an overhead console? Those look similar to that. Although I'm just going off memory. Not sure of the other one. I have 2 sets of gear wrenches that I purchased many years ago when they first came out. Only trouble I have had with them is wearing out (not breaking) the ratchet mechanism in a couple of the common wrenches. Ive never managed to break one and I havent been gentle. I really don't underatand how I ever accomplished anything before owning them. Probably some of my favorite tools. I can't say for certain but I'm sure someone makes an adapter and honestly if someone is in the buisiness of building trucks of this caliber probably has the resources to manufacture one. Never really shot alot of trap. I'm a skeet shooter at heart. Personal beat is 23/25. But watch my father shoot many a perfect round. I built a clay thrower a couple of weeks ago. Been planning this for a while but finally found time to throw it together (pun intended). I always seem to be a day behind when I get on here. lol Yesterday I tackled the new project on the mj. Sleeping quarters. I put the topper back on and began construction of a sleeping platform with storage underneath. don't worry everthing is good with the wife, I don't need a place to sleep. We are planning a road trip vacation to go see Yellowstone National Park and I have convinced her to take the truck. Today I have to deck the platform and begin working on a liner for the topper and some lighting....

I spent the last 2 days changing a u joint and both rear wheel bearings. It began with just the clunky u joint. I crawled under to change it and noticed the wheel seals leaking. I thought to myself what a great time to fix it since I didn't need to drive anywhere for a few days. After a lot of chasing parts, received wrong parts first round, I found a press at a friend of a friend house. It took 2 days because for some silly reason I still don't own a press. Locating and obtaining permission to use one, seems to be more difficult than before. I think when all this crap is over I am making a trip to harbor fraught to purchase a press. Put her all back together yesterday afternoon. Took a short test drive. Unfortunately something happened to the soothing vibration and growl coming from the rear of the truck. Now I have to listen to that silly radio in the dash. Oh well I trust my truck to begin making another joyful sound of carnage for me to listen to soon enough.....

Did I find a replacement renix oil cap?

I did but it was long ago in a galaxy far far away. Translation: yes but can't remember results, as it has been too long ago for my brain to recall. Weber Carburetor 38 Dges/Dgas
watchamakalit replied to AMC86Kid's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I want to start off by saying I am for sure not a carberator guru. I have spent my shjare of hours leaned over a fender scratching my head just like you are. It sounds to me like you need a vacuum guage, a tachometer and a fuel pressure guage, and a manual or at bare minimum a parts breakdown for that carb. before you will get much farther with success. It also sounds like you would benifit from some reasearch on how to properly set a carb. I am not trying to tell you how, I just know that continually moving screws when you don't fully understand what they do will not help. To the best of my ability and guesswork: The screw behind the choke is an idle adjustment. It will help you to adjust the idle. To get the idle adjusted properly you first need to adjust the air fuel mixture. Its been a long time but this is best done with a vacuum guage IIRC. The 2 mixture screws are probably Low speed mixture and High speed mixture. I can't tell you which one is which, but a manual will. The other port is probably a full time vacuum for a break booster or somthing similar. I hope all this helps. And I am sure someone on here with more carb experience than me can help some more. -
Have you considered a donor harness from another vehicle? I swapped the entire engine harness in mine in about an hour. It also gave me a chance to completely dissassemble the harness and inspect/repair it before installing.
-
Cluster swap all day. Looks a lot better IMO. Its a really easy upgrade and you gain full gauges.

While you have the belt off pay attention to the water pump. Especially the amount of resistance it takes to turn. There should be some as you should be spinning the impeller in fluid. Sounds almost like the impeller has come loose. Have you had any cooling issues? I would give the water pump shaft a good wiggle side to side and make sure the bearings are good. Also try taking a long bar (prybar or similar item works well). With engine running place one end of the bar on each belt driven item and place the other end in your fist with your ear up against it. You will be able to hear where the noise is coming from. I was taught this trick before mechanics had stethoscopes. It still works.
