quick question for 91-92 owners
Minuit replied to Pete M's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Uh, guys, guys, guys... mine don't have tethers either. Kinda wish they did. -
For those of you who've done this: Is there an interior paint from a good brand that matches the charcoal(grey) interior panels? To be more specific I have a set of seat tilt lever bezels that need to be painted. Thanks.

What price do you see Comanche's going for on CL in your area?
Minuit replied to ScrapHybrid's topic in The Pub
Top tip: If you want to sell a rust-free MJ, just move up north! Totally worth it! To actually answer your question, most MJs for sale in my area are usually spanked, 86 models, or both. Junky ones go from between $600 on the really low end to about $1500-2500 for a halfway decent but far from perfect Renix era. Truly clean trucks and HOs are up from there. HOs are usually worth a bit more than an equivalent Renix truck for good reason. -
Your truck is amazing! My oil pan took more than a day to get removed (it did not survive the process) and several hours of scraping to get the block clean. I hate those cork gaskets with a passion. The factory used a rubber gasket very similar to the Fel-Pro after about 1994 or so. I've never seen such a clean blue interior. And you may or may not know, but the wheels on your 2dr XJ are Comanche Eliminator wheels. They're quite rare. I have a set I need to clean up and put on my '89. But that looks like a really nice XJ. I wouldn't be able to cut it up either.

IMHO that looks pretty fixable. As sinkrun said, look for any evidence of MJs being highly valued that you can. NADA values are much more favorable than KBB.

I don't want to think about (but I can imagine) what state my MJ(s) would be in if not for CC. I'll throw a few bucks your way for sure next time I get paid.

I'm ASSuming he wants to switch the columns between the two trucks for some reason. You'll obviously need a way to shift the auto truck's transmission. Adding the OEM floor shifter is pretty easy as long as the hole for the floor shifter cable has been already drilled in the firewall. Mine already had the hole for it and they all should, but some people have said their trucks didn't. The auto column will go into the manual truck with no problems, but obviously the shifter hardware will just dangle around, and you'll have to make sure it stays in the "park" position so the ignition cylinder will unlock. Dunno if the manual column has the mechanism for the auto trans park lock cable but I doubt it, but that can be left out if desired. Otherwise it's a bolt in swap. As long as both are on the same side of the Renix-HO year split (and possibly even if they aren't, I don't know firsthand) the ignition cylinders can be swapped around so you can use the same key as before. So basically what gogmorgo said, just with more words.

For reference I went on the Jeep site and loaded up a new Cherokee with every option I could find - $41,275. Damn, that's a lot of money for either vehicle. Or you can just do what I did, wait 25 years and buy the expensive stuff from a junkyard and put it on a base model. I win in the end, Jeep.

If my understanding of the way the rockers mount is correct, yes. The way I remove the sliding seat bracket is to grind off the "stop" rivets and pull the rollers out. Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk

As much as I'd like to say I'm not dumb, I haven't come across any evidence that it's true.

Much appreciated. If that's the case then if I really, really wanted rocking chair seats, I suppose I could cut down and re-weld the brackets to lower the height (although that would obviously destroy a set of MJ bucket seat brackets. I might use a set from a bench for experimentation if I were to do this). I'm interested as to the offset though.
-
That's not good news. I'm no stranger to swapping seat tracks around, so that wouldn't be an issue. I assume the floor pedestals are shorter on the rocker seats to make up the difference?
-
Alright, so here's the deal. I have tilting Laredo seats in the '91 right now on the correct MJ bucket brackets. I know where I can find a set of seats with the rocking chair feature that came on earlier XJs. I also know that the rocker, which is a part of the seat slider, adds height to the seat. How much taller would this make the seat? Looking over some past threads, the answer varies from "a couple of inches" to "I'm 5'1 and my head touches the roof". Does anyone have measurements? For reference I'm 5'11 and I have plenty of headroom with the current setup. I'm very happy with my current seats, I just think the rocking chair feature would be neat. I'm willing to modify things to make the rocking chairs work if necessary if this is even worth it to do.

Here's something some of you might appreciate - a review of the 1987 XJ from when it was new. A very favorable review. All they could complain about were the price, seat latches and rear window :D

I know you're getting dogpiled but there's a reason for mudflap laws. Just had to have my father's windshield replaced because of a rock thrown up by a lifted truck's tires. As for the other stuff, live and learn. I'm not even that old and I realize how dumb I used to be when I was in high school. There's published proof of it if you look at some of my past CC posts.

V6 automatic? Or did you luck out and get the hemi? I always laugh when the "sports" category rental cars are all V6 autos.

A not-so-mechanically-inclined friend of mine had a rusty '78 as his first car. A year later and he got rid of it for a Miata. Wonder why that could be. :D

If you swap to a later transmission but keep the original TCU will you still be able to change shift modes? Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk

Genssi 80W CREE LED White 1156 Reverse Lights
Minuit replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
How are these doing Don? Getting tired of my useless reverse lights. Sent from my LG-D850 using Tapatalk -
The AW4 is simply the best automatic transmission I've ever owned. Blah blah blah shift points blah blah blah overheating. The Novak article about the AW4 is a load of crap. The super crappy 3.07 gears the stick trucks got really puts a damper on the fun factor too. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have a manual any day of the week, but if I was stuck with an auto the AW4 is the one I'd like to be stuck with.

Engine thats been sitting for 10 years 4.0
Minuit replied to sinkrun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My engine was run to 144,868 miles then parked outside for 8 years and suddenly restarted with nothing but an oil change beforehand. Still runs good to this day. You'll be fine. -
Definitely factory paint. I think I've also seen the silver and black the other way around, and I've also seen a silver and maroon one. Also I remember 54bobby's truck was kind of weird option wise - loaded with pretty much every option but it had a 2.5. Wonder where he went? I don't think I've seen him on here in a long time. The earlier XJs and MJs had way more variety in the way they could be built and to me they're way more interesting. One thing that comes to mind is all of the different interior colors (I think they only had grey, cordovan, and tan by '91 if I remember my '91 brochure correctly) After Chrysler came in they got more boring every year. A de-Renixed '87ish truck with all the '80s options like the one on the left is one of those builds I want to do eventually. Thinking about it, that's what I want to do with my '89 once it's out of maintenance debt.

Dayum that's pretty. In the best paintjob too.
