Project: Cruise, a 1960 T-bird.
eaglescout526 replied to eaglescout526's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
This thing has been annoying lately. But I think I might have figured out my high idle issue. Thanks to a lot of digging and help from some of you guys, I was able to get the engine to calm down. Turns out the gasket between the carb and the top cover was on wrong some how but upon inspection, it looks like the gasket was made wrong. So a piece of the carb for some reason wasn’t being covered and was allowing more airflow than it should’ve I also found the throttle return spring and mounting plate and got that back on and everything seems to be working like it should. I got the radiator in. Soon it’ll be time to see if I can get it to move under its own power. -

Oh it’s been a while since I’ve searched. I already have one for the set up plus one from another member who got me one from the junkyard as a back up. But it looks like what you have except not home made lol. I’ll find a pic of it. -

50 of the original 84-86 forks? -
As far as the choke goes, I’m not entirely sure if it operates correctly. I haven’t gotten the engine to be warm enough. I wanted to test things one at a time. First was giving the engine load with the pulleys. No dice. Next is to throw the radiator back in and give it some water(hoping it all stays in the block and not out some gasket). And while I’m at such I’ll be looking into the needle and seat. Now I did rebuild the carb with a genuine Ford rebuild kit that the PO purchased sometime in the 90’s from a Ford dealer(that must’ve been a tricky find) and everything inside the kit was in brand new shape. Nothing rotten or dry. Wasn’t exposed to the sun, heat or the elements so I’m confident the parts with the kit are correct and right to the specs but if adjusting the seats doesn’t help then I’ll be looking into a new rebuild kit.

So I did some searching on just carbs in general after getting all the belts on the pulleys and it still did not slow down the RPM much. But my dad helped me with this beast and there was a brief moment where the engine did calm down and then ramped the RPMs right back up. After doing my research I found a hot rodder forum that had a guy trying to figure out a high idle issue and another person said that the needle and seat could not be being pushed down to stop the fuel flow and overfilling the bowl and causing the engine to just run away in similar situation like mine. Since I did rebuild the carb myself, it seems very likely this is my issue as I saw the top gasket between the carb itself and the top plate was moist with fuel. Sound like a good theory or crazy?

It is if someone is wanting to do the conversion and wanting to keep their Jeep AMC and not use the Chrysler set up. The only things that aren’t available anymore is on the inside of the bell, being the fork and the pivot ball but that’s gonna be a pain to punch out.

It’s an external slave cylinder for the clutch. It’s the AMC style of what Chrysler decided to do in the HO years.

can't we still order these from Chrysler or did you clean them all out?

Question about Cruise Control
eaglescout526 replied to Warren99's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You could always install cruise with your current column. Just the only thing that you may or may not have is the intermittent wipers which is the only thing the cruise control controls were on. Are you looking to add intermittent wipers as well? Otherwise there is no real difference in a column with cruise vs without cruise. -

Found me another one I like.

Merry Christmas MJ fanatics!!

Damn. Those are good finds. I’ve got a NOS Jeep tailgate decal hanging in the garage above my workbench. I do have a goal to get all the NOS decals that are floating around out there.

Have you thought about putting a couple more nuts on the stud and tightening them together and use one of those two as a hold with one wrench and wrench off the stuck one(maybe apply some heat)? Another one you could also try if you don’t want to damage the threads is to use a hot glue gun and a pair of vice grips/channel locks and hot glue the stud to either one and see if you can get the nut off that way?

Question about Cruise Control
eaglescout526 replied to Warren99's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The only major difference between the two set ups is that the manual trans has a switch that sits above the pedal and disengages cruise for shifting. But it’s better to have the automatic set up as it’s harder to find the original clutch switch. You’ll just have to remember when you have cruise engaged to not shift unless you tap the brakes to turn off cruise. Otherwise it’s plug n play. -
Question about Cruise Control
eaglescout526 replied to Warren99's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a metric ton of those regulators(yellow AMC box). Very rarely do they fail or not work but if it has been exposed to moisture for years, expect there to be some corrosion as it is not perfectly sealed. Fun fact, Dana, the axle makers had a division that used to make all those cruise control kits. AMC got the exclusive contract for those kits to be more factory and professional than what you would get from say Sears or the other big 3 makers. -
That honestly looks like a good rear bumper to me. Even if it looks a little mangled a BFH and heat will bring it back to being straight. can't be afraid to save those bumpers. *D4 TRIM STYLE D4 - VINYL BENCH SEAT -SA CHARCOAL 135 Zone 35-Washington 1AA U.S. Dealer Retail 3VQ Customer Preferred Discount ALA ALK APA Monotone Paint BAP 75 Amp Alternator BCX Maint.
