What differential lube to use?
whowey replied to Luvtohunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Synthetic lubes don't get as hot as conventional ones to begin with. But that is the second time I've seen you post that. Do you have a link to some manufacturer stating that ??? Because unless it states such clearly in their warranty paperwork, it would be a violation of the Magnuson-Moss Act. You have said in the past that you work for a Valvoline store, so I wonder if this isn't a case of a company rep feeding you guys a line to drive sales. -
Illinois has the SoS.. Secretary of State. But you take care of that stuff at the Driver's Services offices.

Okay... you live in a state dumb enough to elect Ted Kennedy like 4000 times. Dumb enough to elect Michael Dukakis, 4 times to your state legislature, 3 terms as your Governnor (one with John Kerry as Lt. Governor). And you have to wonder why they are going to construe a rule to increase the amount of taxation they can get.. while claiming it was people 'screwing' them that caused the rule.

I'm not to thrilled with any oil additives out there. The lack of control over their contents and inability to prove the claims with solid evidence keeps me from being able to get behind them. Seafoam is a good product, but it is meant as a cleaning agent for occasional use. It contains ALOT of high level distillates. Kerosene would be able to achieve much of the same effect. And PLEASE don't get me started on Slick Advertising 50. The maker of their main effective ingredient (DuPont Chemical) has said repeatedly that Teflon was never intended for the environment inside and engine. They are basically the Sham Wow of additives... A whole lot of media hype.. not alot of effect. 'Hey, its made by DuPont.. DuPont makes good stuff, so you know its gotta be good' EDIT===> Exactly what I am talking about.... http://www.carbibles.com/additives.html Take a read down the page.. and you will see Zmax exposed as.... mineral oil with some food colouring in it. So yes it will do some of the things they claim. It will help reduce engine deposits.. just like any high distillate will do... say like seafoam, Marvel's Mystery Oil or good old fashioned Kerosene.... Marketing is what marketing is... a slick way to get you to buy their products...

The reason that the the manufacturers are recommending dinos has nothing to do with heat. They are saying that the synthetics don't allow enough wear to for the gears (or lockers) to break in correctly. this is true on break ins in axles, and engines as well, and i consider fairly common knowledge, i AM speaking of post break in, tests have shown, differentials specifically here, ran hotter while operating w/ synthetic oil. the synthetic oil lubricates slightly better, but tended to trap the heat in the molecules more than regular oil disipated heat better. i am by no means saying synthetic will do harm, but it is not the miracle everyone thinks it is. thanks though. Got a link to any tech info from the locker or gear manufacturers??? The only thing I have seen is from Auburn about using Synthetics in the Ected. They are worried that even with LSD additive synthetics are still prone to causing chatter.

Yes, 1/2 wave or 5/8's wave antennas are great. Techinically speaking a full-wave antenna would be best. But the size would be stupid long. The length of a full-wave antenna for Channel 1 would be 36.467 feet or 18.225 foot for a 1/2 wave antenna. So the 108" antennas that are seen would be a 1/4 wave antenna. Another issue you are going to run into is that organized rides are now requiring these to be tied to down to prevent their flopping about. Which pretty much negates any extra usefulness from them.

You are correct... If you have an abundance of coax you do not want to coil it. If it is coiled it will create a choke and drive the SWR up and lower the effective power levels. When I worked for a CB dealer we saw more people that would go to the truck stop, buy 18-30 foot premade coax rolls, have all this extra coax neatly coiled up and bundled. And then wonder why their SWR was terribly high. Getting the correct amount even if that means having a custom length made generally ends up being cheaper and better in the end. To the OP.. how well grounded is your new antenna mount? That should always be the first place to start chasing a wonky SWR reading. Many times running a body ground to the base of the mount will clear up a problem.

no Why not? Ben and I will bring beer. It had better be GOOD beer.... No Olympia, or anything from Coors....

The cab makes me think neither Jeep nor Mog. It looks like something from Europe.. It looks alot like others from Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Or even possibly something Eastern Bloc.

How do you ever read the local CL ads??? We seem to have an overabundance of stupidity lurking on the N. Illinois and S Wisc. CL's. Search Jeep and let the stupidity flow......

My thoughts on the local dealers that are going to close...
whowey replied to 89MJComanche's topic in The Pub
The first round blood bath here was two small single brand dealers.. one that sold Dodges only and one that sold Chrylsers only. But even that was Chryslers fault.. both of those dealers sold Plymouths.... And the first Jeep dealer was a big superstore kinda place. The sold GMs, Volkswagens,Jeeps and Scions. They were VERY supportive of the local Jeep scene. Thats going to be a loss. -
Make sure you open the box long before you plan on installing it... All of my experiences with Rock Auto have been less than satisfying... I had them air me a fuel pump for my MJ once.. the box came and an auto tranny kick down cable was in the box....

You guys are talking about turning this into an all-night drunky.... The difference between youngins and oldsters is... oldsters can still match the youngins drink for drink, but we can't face the next morning the same way anymore.... You were underage back then..... 8)

I'd be a maybe... you young-ins scare the heck outta old guys like me.....

I'm Will or Bill.. I'm from South of Rockford,IL.. Thankfully not any closer to Chicago. One sad lonely MJ that always seems to get ignored...

Need to replace Gas Tank in 88
whowey replied to Luvtohunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you have the big tank... drain it before trying to take it down... That was a suck experience... 100+lbs dropping on my head..... -
I usually get a can of starter fluid to check this... Shoot a little in the air horn. If it fires.. start looking at fuel related causes.

I agree with Pete... for stuff that doesnt need to be tight-spec'ed or accurate they are great... Jack stands???? Do I need the pair with the pretty Snap on Logo at $200 or would that money be better spent on a $40 pair of HF jack stands????

The limit in IL is a 3 inch body lift. Found this out when I was layed off and spending the winter driving a wrecker a couple of years ago. The story.... The police dispatcher calls and gives me a 1-vehicle accident, truck split in half with FD enroute. I go and pick-up the rollback thinking I am going to be spending some time winching pieces of a truck onto it tonight. But what has me wondering is the fact that dispatcher gave me an in-town address. I can't figure out how they managed to hit anything hard enough to split a vehicle in two. I get to the scene to find the pick-up sitting in the middle of the street, like it was parked there. Just missing its bed. Now its fairly normal to see pick-ups with all sorts of home made, stake beds, flat beds, or even just a sheet of plywood thrown over the frame. I get out and the officer brings me over and says, I don't know how they did it.. but the bed from the truck is wedged across the street between two trees. The bed is REALLY wedged between these two trees. It is sitting on about at 40 degree angle and all the grass is torn up from the street to it. I couldn't pop it loose from its position with a crow bar and even with some Fire/Rescue guys we couldn't pop it loose. I ended up winching it out, bending the heck out of it in the process. After we got the truck back to shop, the police measured the aluminum cylinders used as a body lift at 5 inches. The accident reconstructionist said that the kid driving hit the box against a tree on the corner. This caused the bolts through the blocks to break off. When he turned the corner the box was slungshot off the frame and skidded across the street on its side. It hit the trees on the other side of the street and fell over wedging itself.

KIA wants $185 for a new carpet Those things are a dime a dozen out there. A crowbar and a dark Home Depot parking lot and you are in business.... :brows: I don't know any better way to get the smell outta carpet...
