  1. I've had an OX in the rear of my CJ7 since 2007. A Detroit up front (with manual hubs) means I can be completely unlocked on the street and completely locked on the trail. I paid a shop to install it. I do axle work, but in this case work had me pretty busy and paying someone to do the work kept the project on schedule. About 2 years later I started having problems with the shifter. Turns out the installer never had it right, and had actually left out a spring. I called OX and they were very helpful, although I do think I ended up paying for it (don't remember). No problems since then. The cable is rubber sheathed. The inner cable isn't exposed on the end like a parking brake cable is. I've done some snow wheeling and never had a problem with it freezing up. Keep in mind you get a super beefy diff cover with the deal. I ended up with a $100 gift cert for OX from somewhere and bought a cover for my front axle as well.
  2. Do you happen to know which color is closest to the lighter parts of the interior? There are several greyish colors in their catalog. This is a question I have also. I'm partial to the SEM interior spray paints. I've found the caps are pretty accurate as to the color, and I used to have a auto/paint supply store nearby that carried all the SEM interior colors so I could take a part in and compare. The dark charcoal is SEM 4020 The lighter gray is SEM 4500 I took non faded interior pieces in to the paint store and they matched them perfectly. I bought a pint of the 4020 and a quart of the 4500. I am restoring both the interiors of my 90 eliminator and 91 Pioneer. I did a google search on those part numbers and came up blank? What line of SEM products are those numbers for?
  3. I've seen that same scenario played out 3 times in my life. Once I was sitting in the turn lane talking to a friend who had pulled up next to me in the straight lane. When I went, he was still looking at me and went also... this was waaaay back in high school. Seeing it happen that way made it stick in my mind. I would also bet a phone was involved. Looking at phone but see movement in the other lane in peripheral vision. Sorry to hear about it.
  4. If the 86 has the metric ton option, it may have the AMC20 rear axle. Not a bad piece of gear. Only thing I can think of that would be desirable from an 86 drivetrain.

  6. Handle has been bead blasted to remove rust, coated with por15, then primed and painted semi-flat black to match original. Pivot points white lithium greased.
  7. I think those are my favorite XJ/MJ wheels. Not a fan of the black though, powder coated in a silver so they look similar to original except maintenance free would be cool.
  8. Agree finding a usable pair can be hit or miss. Many just crumble apart as soon as you touch them. That's why I bought from Rockauto. Mine look like 87MJTIM's above (gap). Since then I've come across a few 95-96 XJs with front fender liners that looked good and were still very pliable, but haven't bothered to pull them. So I think they can still be found if one is patient.
  9. I bought two sets from Rockauto for my XJ and MJ. They are a different material than original but that isn't an issue to me if they are durable. Also, I recall they were pretty inexpensive. So far I have only installed one, and it wasn't as good a fit as the original. I ended up with a gap where they are supposed to meet the inner edge of the fender flare. It's noticeable at the rear portion of the front wheel well. Maybe the other 3 will be better when I get around to it. But, I think I would look for a good original set at a junkyard if I had that option.
  10. Another satisfied customer for Discount Tire. I factored in mounting and balancing at WalMart and then went around town. If anyone could meet the price within $50, they had a sale. No takers. Once you purchase from them, you get occasional emails advertising sales (rebates) around major holidays. I have Kumho (KR21 I think?) 225/75r15 on my XJ and have been very happy with them. It is a daily driver including snow and ice. I have Michelins on my Silverado and won't accept anything else. Yes they cost more, but for a vehicle that will see a lot of miles, they are a sound choice. For a less driven vehicle, they will dry rot before you run the tread off them.

  13. Hey, flatslug87, I am with you on the California bashing. I see it all over the internet from people in other parts of the country who use all kind of pejoritive words. You have to remember that long before the Gold Rush, California has been a place a huge number of people all over the world have aspired to get to... My parents followed the California dream in the very early 1950's from Scotland. A long time friend traces her family dream back to a Pio Pico land grant in the 1820's. (Pio Pico was the last Spanish Govenor of California). My kids can trance their ancestory on their mothers side directly back to a man who arrived in New France in 1691. His decentants are all over the U.S. and Canada. How many of us have ever been been able to attend a 300th wedding anniversary celebration? Even the first maps of California in the 16th century (yes, the 1500's) were of a paradise off the west coast of the new world. This brings out envy in some people. California is the Golden State for so many more reasons that just the 1849 Gold Rush. California is the the place many people all over the world want to be. When was the last time you heard somebody who wants to go to Cleveland, Pennsylvania or North Dakaota? soI just got back from 5 week in southern europe and the Mediteranian. When people heard I was from California there was a much different reaction than when they heard Anita was from Montreal and Cleveland. It was "Wow, California, I have a cousin there, I wish I coud be there. California is both economically and culturally the richest, most vibrant state in the country. It simply brings out the envy in some people. Even the Austraiian we met undrstood the Californa dream. They compared Australia to California. Not better, but very much the same. It's funny, I know a family that recently retired and moved to North Dakota. They love it. I've visited PA several times and enjoyed myself. I've gone to Ohio many times, primarily for the National Rifle and Pistol Championships held at Camp Perry, Ohio (near Port Clinton). No complaints. I've never lived in CA, but I've traveled there several times and know many people who have lived there, almost all active duty Marines. Some like it, others hate it. Yep, hate is the word he and his wife use. CA would be a last choice for me as a place to live, along with New York and New Jersey, or anywhere with restrictive gun laws. I support and defend the Constitution and it's amendments (all of them, including the 2nd).
  14. EFI to carb conversion kit? What engine do you have? And if it was equipped with fuel injection, I highly recommend doing whatever is necessary to retain it. I've rebuilt and tuned carbs. I don't miss doing it. FI is the way to go. I have no experience putting a V8 in an XJ/MJ, but generally speaking, two things that always complicate an engine swap for me are power steering lines and exhaust.
  15. I understand awd vs 4wd. It doesn't have lockers. It's an open diff. And the wheel isn't just rolling like a normal open diff would. It's stopped/going backwards. You didn't answer the question, are you doing this with the wheels in the air? It is possible someone swapped axles and you have mismatched gear ratios. Is your truck an original 4wd or was it converted from 2wd (check the VIN, does it have original 4wd emblems?) An odd thing I have seen to make a wheel lock up is a rusted parking brake cable that is seized inside it's sheath. In this situation, the truck could back up ok (the rear drum brakes are designed to be more effective going forward than reverse) but as soon as it tried to go forward the one rear wheel would lock up. The only thing I can think of that would make a tire appear to go "backward" would be driving a full locker or spool on dry pavement. In a tight turn, the inside wheel can't travel the distance the outside wheel is taking, and will appear to skip (often making a chirp-chirp-chirp sound). It's not really going backward, just trying to catch up to the outside tire.
  16. All the hold down bolts I've looked at have been the same length, 1987-2001.
  17. The 1996 and newer battery trays incorporate a battery temp sensor and are slightly narrower than 1995 and earlier trays. 1987-1995 7.5" x 10.5" 1996-2001 7.5" x 9.5" They are interchangeable, same bolt pattern. The change in length is on the "engine" side of the tray, so the later tray allows a little more room to reach the alternator, for example. All this is based on personal experience and is for 4.0. I have no idea if 2.5 motors used the same trays.

I have some tan seat covers in decent shape for the seats with the side bolsters.
  19. No tether on my 91 XJ or 91 MJ.
  20. The relay won't change the amount of amps flowing in the power circuit for the lights. The fuse will see whatever the load is drawing. The relay itself will draw a tiny amount when it is energized. That is through its control circuit and will not affect the main load circuit amp draw. Your math is correct. The thing to do would be measure the amp draw with a meter. If you don't have a meter for that big of a draw (not surprising), if you have extra fuses you could experiment and see what size fails. That would give you a ballpark measure.
  21. Factory ones are pretty rare, I found one in a junkyard in Hawaii. Rockauto lists them here: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/jeep,1991,cherokee,4.0l+l6,1180055,heat+&+air+conditioning,a/c+compressor+bypass+pulley,10329 That's for 91+, didn't search for older.
  22. Nice truck, burgundy interior! Wheels are a fail as is the steering wheel cover. If one can't find a factory maroon leather steering wheel, just throw a black leather cover on it. Better than that red one. Wonder what the added rocker switch on the dash is for.
  23. MJs have specific seat mounts. XJ seat mounts are not a direct bolt in, nor are they easily adaptable. I have a set of 1991 XJ seat mounts but I suspect shipping would be expensive.
