Tires And Transmissions?
FrankTheDog replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If it's a T5 it'll say Borg Warner on the side of it. But don't worry, when you get underneath it it'll look just like the picture. AX5 -
4.7 Long Block On Cl?
FrankTheDog replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
As far as which engines you can use in your 91 (which if it's running good I would just reseal it) you can use any non coil pack HO engine. Wrangler engines will work as long as they're not coil pack engines. You just have to put your throttle body and sensors on it. 97 and 98's will need the distributor swapped for your old one. Also put your water pump from your 91on the front. They have different length water pumps There is even a boss on the back drivers side of the head for the temp sensor that you can drill out on the 97-99's. One thing to be careful with though is 92 and up engines have a different size pilot hole in the end of the crank. You can use any auto transmission up through 96 will plug in. Oil leaks, valve cover, oil filter adapter and rear main seal are the biggest culprits. -

What year 4x4 aw4 do you have? 21 spline will only work in 1990 and earlier. -
Cherokee Donor Swap Questions
FrankTheDog replied to GirsMJ86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
95 and 96 are nearly identical, both have airbags and they have the newer style seat mounts. The 96 is mostly a 95 with a 2nd O2 sensor and obd2 computer. I've had 3 now and electrically they've been fine. Would probably work good if you also swapped in a 96 or so dakota fuel tank and pump. Just guessing there. -
Yes, all 86-92 MJ's, 84-2001 XJ's, 87-2006 Wranglers, 93-98 ZJ's, 2002-2007 Liberty's all have wheels you can use on your MJ. With all of those you probably have at least 25 styles of wheel to choose from.

Build a GT350 Falcon, modern 5.0 and 5 speed with 64-66 GT350 handling parts. There should be plenty of repop parts out there to be had.

Internal Slave / Bellhousing Swap Question.
FrankTheDog replied to zak's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
As far as the clutch goes I've been using the clutch that was in my 92 when I swapped to the external slave AX15 2 years ago. -
Early Vs Late Unit Bearings For The D30
FrankTheDog replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Be careful with the 92's. I have 3 92's that were 2wd. 2 built in 92 and 1 built in 91. The 91 built 2wd has the older brakes and tapered bearings in the rotor and the 92 built 2wd's have the 4wd knuckle and unit bearings. -
That $65 + $10 shipping from Mark's isn't a bad price. Mark's is a good outfit, they're not that far from me.

My bad. But on another note, I'm running an ECU from a 94 XJ country with no trouble. Only thing it does do is throw a code for the non existent AC clutch. It doesn't throw a CEL though.

Oh My Clean. Il/wi Border
FrankTheDog replied to Automan2164's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
It'll have 4.56's in it. -
If your engine is a 92 you'll want a transmission from a 92 and up XJ/MJ. The pilot shaft on the front is larger on the later ones.

They have a couple sets of original factory service manual sets on eBay. I bought a set a couple years ago. Came with the mechanical, electrical, right hand drive manual and factory service bulletin manual for 1992 MJ XJ and YJ. Which works out great for me because I have one of each. All daily drivers.

What do you consider full size? I have a 235/75/15 under mine.

Yet Another Hood Release Cable Issue
FrankTheDog replied to redcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
18.99 and some lube for the pivot points and latches. Show them some love and they won't break on you. It's that simple, really.- 5 replies

You won't be disappointed with 4.10's. First gear popped out all the time in my XJ so we always started out in second gear without issue. Drove it that way for 75,000 miles. Towed an MJ home from Virginia like that. That was with 265/75/16 load range E tires.

I ran my 98 XJ for 180,000 miles on 265/75/16's with 4.10 gears. There is nothing wrong with that ratio. I've towed with it and have driven many highway miles. MPG was from 18-20 average to 22 mpg running down I-81 to tennesee. On the way back from tennesee I dragged a Volkswagen camper bus that weighed 4300 lbs plus the weight of a dolly and averaged 15. Went 80 mph most of the way down and 50 on the way back. 80mph was 3,000 rpm. That jeep has 400k on it now with the original motor.

Tower Or Nub On The Timing Cover?
FrankTheDog replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you used a Goodyear gator belt it would of chewed right through that nub until it was self clearanced. That's what happened to my son in law. Didn't notice it and the belt just ground it away, it didn't do anything to the belt. -
A little more than two miles, more like 23.

Clutch Issue, Got I Robbed?
FrankTheDog replied to Gilbertond's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't know what tranny comes behind an 86 2.5 but if it's an ax4 or ax5 you reach up around the tranny and remove the dust boot off the shifter tower and press down with two fingers and turn the retainer and the shifter pops loose. It leaves it hanging there while you can drop the tranny. Saves a lot of time not having to mess with the console and shift boot. I've done this several times with my AX15's in MJ's and XJ's. It's all detailed on how to do it in the factory service manuals. As costly as a factory service manual is it saves you a ton of money in the long run because it tells you how to diagnose and repair all the systems in our trucks.
