to the best of my knowledge the WJ was never a diesel. at least not in this country. the WK has the CRD option starting in 07. KJs of course had the CRD option in 05-06.

that's a looooong hiatus for a truck! glad to see it's moving again great find! as I'm sure you know, everything made of rubber is considered suspect. that's a long time to sit still.

baseball is still happening? kidding aside, I'm assuming that all those awesome players that the Tigers gave away in the last couple years are still doing awesome? like, best-of-their-career levels of awesome?

I love a v8 as much as the next guy, but yeah the reputation of the entire WJ drivetrain is just... not good.

that pic is just a generic internet pic. my truck got a 9". But if you go to autozone's website and plug in a '99 Explorer you should be able to search for that part. oh, and never plug a vent. they are important.

I think it's 98 or 99 4x4 without the snowplow option. There are other boxes you could use too.

ahhh, the delirious joys of owning a now decades old vehicle designed during the desperate, dying days of a small automotive manufacturer. plus throw some road salt into that wound for extra fun.

I've been known to let my engineering side get ahead of my common sense side now and again and I can totally get behind a complicated swap, but my gut just feels like a 4.0 block/heads/(intake/exhaust?) would be the way to go. stockish with modern innards. I'd probably even go and paint the valve cover and intake a dark color so they blend in rather than be all blingy. #oldirondeservestolookold? I guess I can't really comment on the transmission though, as I haven't driven a non-od trans yet.

holy cow! I imagine that's one tool that autozone doesn't have on their loan-a-tool program.

I think the real question is still: how much of the ol' girl's charm do you want to retain? are you wanting a mostly stock old Jeep to tool around in? or a restomod that looks old, but comes with the conveniences of a modern drivetrain to be a more comfortable daily driver?
