you can do a quick and easy check of the ratio by spinning one tire around exactly twice while counting the number of times that the driveshaft rotates. just past 3 rotations is 3.08.

most guys don't bother putting the top cap back.

have you tried cleaning the block so you can pinpoint where new oil is leaking?

the valve cover gasket is a prime candidate for oil leaks and is easy to replace . (don't use cork and read up on the proper torque specs and torque pattern) the headgasket usually fails in a more catastrophic manner so I doubt that is a headgasket issue.
