  1. I don't know. Unless more has been done to that 350 than all the shiny parts, it could still be pushing about the same power and not all that much more torque than a 4.0. An early 80's 350 in a truck was only making around 160hp and 250lb-ft, compared to the first Renix 4.0 with 175 and 225. The ba10 and d35 would probably hold up to street use, and least for a while.
  2. Run a loop of wire around the horizontal bar and hang it from something. The brake line right there is the most obvious spot to hang it from but probably not the best.
  3. If the lever's dangling loose, you'll effectively have no rear brakes. Wiring it up in position (probably somewhere around horizontal or slightly above, 3 o'clock when looking from behind) will restore brakes. You can adjust it up and down to pick an optimal bias point as well. There's also a DIY somewhere about making a new vertical rod if you wanted to go that route.
  4. Have you ever removed a windshield? It's not the easiest thing to do. I've had to replace a few at work, and we never managed to pull one without breaking it. My insurance will cover a windshield replacement. I make an appointment at a shop, the shop handles the claim, I only pay my $200 deductible. Of course replacing windshields costs more up here in the great white north, but it would be something to look into. I personally would prefer to have a new piece of glass than one that's already seen a bunch of miles.
  5. Nah, pretty well everything's available online at reasonable prices, the kicker is shipping everything out of Europe. Even after coughing up the extra for express shipping, I've never received anything in under two weeks, and car parts are heavy and just cost a lot to ship.
  6. An XJ windshield will fit no problem. A few members on here have used 97+ windshields due to the better tint profile and trim.
  7. Yeah. If you scroll up that's my filler area above... It's not as clean as yours... Always wondered what they were for. Figured the diesels might have had a different fill neck that needed different holes, but I really have no idea.
  8. Looks like you've repurposed a bolt hole, where'd the bolt go? Also any idea what those other two seemingly random holes in there are for?
  9. I tried to take a picture of the speedo gear on the tcase I have in storage, but it's still attached to the trans and not in a well-lit spot so it didn't really work out. You should be able to find a photo or something to illustrate it through Google. I think it was quadratec that has a good page that I got most of my info from, but it was a year ago since that post and a year and a half since I was messing with speedo stuff so I'm a little fuzzy on it now.
  10. I was trying to work out some way I could fill the tank, let it sit at -40, top it up again, and then drive somewhere where it hit 80 degrees or more, but then I remembered that the level in my tank has this annoying habit of dropping when I drive that far.
  11. Mine has no sign of ever having a tether, however given it was 21 years old with 280,000 miles when I bought it, there's no guarantee it's even the original cap. Never mind the rust and dust, the truck sees a LOT of gravel. It is an earlier '91 build, January 22nd I think, so a tether could have been added later I suppose?
  12. Unless there's some structural reason not to (like it's rusted out or cracked and doesn't work as a step any more), it might be best just to remove the reinforcement. You may have to anyway. I had similar gusseting on the corners of mine (but significantly lower quality) and it interfered with the side plates of the hitch. You'll also have to remove the ball because the hitch tucks up right against the bottom of the bumper and the nut underneath the ball gets in the way, looks like the gusset for the ball will probably be okay but if it got welded to the ball or the nut at all it may as well go.
  13. Right. The aluminum wheels are 7" wide, the steels only 6", so that will limit the maximum width of the tire you can run. But you shouldn't have an issue putting 235 widths on a 6" wheel.
  14. The condition is about par for the course for west coast vehicles. Never getting winter will do that.
  15. They left the factory with a range of sizes. I would have to check but your 205/75/15's are towards the small size of what the factory offered. The largest factory size was 225/75/15. That said, it's much easier (and cheaper) to find 235/75/15, given its just about the most popular tire size ever, and they fit great. I've currently got them on my MJ and an XJ. If you start going much bigger than that, the front tires will start to rub on the factory lower control arms at full steering lock, but other than that you should be able to fit up to a 32" tire on wheels with the factory offset at factory ride height.
  16. Two obstacles, yes, but the ridiculousness is what makes it all work ;). But it can't honestly be any more work than dropping a 4.0 into a Niva. Which is what I'll be doing eventually I hope. I mean, the thing will practically be midengined to fit a straight-six in there, but I imagine it would be easier with an MJ, with so much more wheelbase to work with.
  17. Yeah, I can understand not keeping it around. I'm at that point with the Niva where I can understand how people can fall out of love with their project. I haven't driven it since May except for a super-sketchy no-brakes run around the block (my block involves four-lane highway, four stops signs, at the time heavy traffic... it was sketchy for sure). It's just been one thing after the other on it, fix one thing, find out something else that needs done before it goes back together, wait several weeks for parts to ship, a couple weeks before I get around to putting them in, find or break something else... I was just putting it back together after changing the oil pan last weekend (it's an engine-out job) and then I decided I should look at the clutch before putting it back together so now I'm waiting on a new clutch. And to make matters worse I'd rolled the Niva into the garage next door cause no one was living there to do the work (with the landlord's blessing of course) and there's someone moving in next week and it's going to be a few weeks before the clutch shows up. Fortunately the couple moving in are curling buddies so it's not a huge deal to them, as long as things go back together nicely, but if not I might need to find a new curling team this winter... So I've got about $2000 in parts into the Niva this summer, so that's the friends and family price, sone assembly required. I'm not quite at the point of actually putting up ads yet though. But I just might if something else goes horribly wrong before the engine goes back in.
  18. I didn't really look too close at the wheels. The difference between the Eliminator wheels and the similar regular XJ alloys comes down to the circle of rivets around the outside. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the guy who put them on wasn't even aware that they were something special. Both the 2dr XJ's that have been in my life have the non-rivet ones.
  19. The Viper V10's are aluminum which will be more easily cooled than the iron blocks... (I'm really digging the idea of a v10 MJ is all)

  21. Good choice. I just put one-piece shafts into my CAD housing and called it done for now, but I've got a non-cad D30 waiting for a rebuild/regear. One of those many many projects that I've had to put on the back burner...
  22. Beyond the more awesome Viper source, Dodge and Ford both used V10's in the '90' and 2000's in heavier-duty trucks. The Ford one is based on the mod V8 so has overhead cams and might be a tight fit width wise, (anyone know of a mod V8 swapped XJ?) but the Dodge one is based off the 360 and OHV so shouldn't be an issue. As far as length goes, the 4.0 is pretty long so I don't think that'll be an issue.
  23. That XJ's front axle won't match the ratio in the "new" Dana 35 you picked up. You'd want one out of an automatic to match the 3.55. But it should match your original rear axle.
  24. That's too bad. At least it's getting use and not going to the crusher immediately. No hanging onto it while you slowly work on it? You wouldn't be interested in replacing it with a Lada, would you? :peek:
