New guy couple of questions
Geonovast replied to Justin_k's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
An experienced Jeep mechanic should have no trouble taking his time and having a tranny swap done in a weekend. I've done it a few times. If you've never done it, find some helpers and give yourself a few extra days, and make sure you've got something else you can drive. If you have to rush, that's when bad things happen. Like when I busted off my CPS when installing a motor because I was in a hurry. -
Forgot about that. I had also cracked loose the next 3 main bearing caps. Torqued them back up to 50, then 70, then 80 ft lbs.

You really need to take your caps lock off there, asm4mcc.

another lift kit question
Geonovast replied to rcturgeon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Am I the only one who likes the look of the MJ rake? I think that's the first time I've ever seen the words 'Rusty's' and 'Good' in the same sentence on here. General consensus is "Friends don't let friends buy rusty's" Look into Hellcreek. I don't have any personal experience with their lifts, but the owner is a member here, and I've heard nothing but good things about their products. viewtopic.php?f=24&t=19998 -
The top RMS is a pain. I was able to get mine out by tapping on the passenger side with a punch while a friend (Lenard here on CC) turned the motor over with a ratchet. As for the cover, no, you can't get it off without at least pulling the transmission back a few inches. The cover goes all the way up to the top of the bellhousing. There is a slot in the middle so it can slide off the crank, unfortunately the bellhousing alignment dowels go through that cover. I have on many occasions thought about cutting that stupid thing in half so it can function like an AW-4 cover.

Help! Wheel U joint issues
Geonovast replied to veritas4156's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
His should be old enough to need the 260 joints. Take your old U-joint into the parts store and make sure you get the right one. -
New guy couple of questions
Geonovast replied to Justin_k's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The CAD began to get phased out with the HO system in 91. Pretty good bet that 86-90 MJs will have a CAD unless as previously stated they have the Selec-trac 4wd system. 91 and 92 shouldn't, but they might. My Dad's 91 XJ was still running a CAD. Also, CAD controls have absolutely nothing to do with transmission. The CAD is controlled with a vacuum switch on the T-case. -
New guy couple of questions

False. 89 was a transition year. The transmission was changed in the middle of the model year. Early 89s had a BA 10/5, Later ones had an AX-15. 89 could come with either from the factory. -
By that rule, he should go with an 8k. A mildly built 4wd 4.0 MJ with driver should easily hit the 4,000lb mark.

RPM issues, 87 4.0...no rev over 3400
Geonovast replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would like to see this bellhousing... But of there's nothing mechanically wrong with the motor.. I'd say that could definitely be it. I would think that if there was a valvetrain problem, the motor would complain quite a bit when you tried to rev it higher. -
The same can be said about the drivers in WI. :brows: Let me rephrase. People in America just can't drive at all, so you get them too. I've been to a handful of states. Missouri is pretty bad, especially in the Lake Ozark area. By far not the worst though.

\ That all entirely depends on what you plan on doing with it. -

another lift kit question
Geonovast replied to rcturgeon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If money's tight, you shouldn't be considering 4.5". 2" is about all you should do on a budget. Another problem with the kit you listed is it has a Trackbar drop kit... not a new bar. This will put your trackbar and draglink out of parallelness, and will cause you problems. Once you get into that height, you need a lot of new everything. It also increases stress on all your 20+ year old stuff, so things will start wearing out fast. Also, you'll have to get some decent meat at 4.5". Then you'll need lower gearing. I would start looking at 2" lifts with maybe coil spacers, LCAs, a small AAL for the back, and that should be about all you need. -
What gears do I have?

Something disapaired over night

Go into your User Control Panel, go to the Friends/Foes section. Anyone you add as a Foe will be blocked on the board. -
I was kidding. :rotfl2: That thing looks pretty toasted. If you're replacing the bearing, you might as well do the U-joint, even if it was still working ok.
-
I see nothing wrong with that U-joint. :dunno:
-
97 was the switchover. 92-96 is 27, 97+ is 29.

87 Diamond In The Rough But Still A Diamond!!

:redX: None of your pics work. I think you're missing the file extension at the end. Whenever I'm posting pics, I usually hit the preview button at the bottom. That'll show you what the post will look like before it actually shows up on the board. -
You? I'm creeping up on 4k here.

TRE is Tie Rod End. It's the end that's in the bracket which is mounted to the framerail. There are no bushings in that. The rubbery part you see between the end of the trackbar and the bracket is nothing more than a grease boot. If that part goes bad, the bar must be replaced. The axle side bushing may be all it is. If it is, you're lucky. There's a nut inside the bracket on the bolt, and you should see a tab hanging down that's attached to the nut. Check to make sure the part of the bar the bushing is in isn't oval, and the hole for the bolt isn't mishapen. You do not want Death Wobble. Death Wobble is not fun.
-
You mean 2.5? No, the AX-4/5 and AX-15 do not use the same shifter.
-
Make sure you do a toe-in alignment afterwords. This needs to be done after any height change, regardless of how small. If you need help : http://www.4x4xplor.com/alignment.html

I still want to see someone replace their floor with plexiglass.
