eaglescout526 Posted January 19, 2021 Share Posted January 19, 2021 Depending on what you’re gonna do like 4 wheeling you’ll want to stick with an XJ box. You can have it rebuilt rather than buy new but that’s up to you. Now if it’s street driving you can upgrade to a ZJ steering box and have a better turn ratio. I disagree with the suggestion to use one from Autozone. I wound up replacing my remanufactured steering box in my F150 from Autozone THREE times. in the course of 20,000 miles. Lares has a good rep from all that I've read, and agree with AZJeff that the big box store units or poorly rebuilt based on countless threads I've read on all the various Jeep forums. Often will come with a "lifetime warranty", but how often do you want to have to change one out?? If you are willing/able to spend a good bit more, a new box from Lares or Redhead is a pretty good bet. 70barracuda Posted January 21, 2021 Share Posted January 21, 2021 I got a red head steering box on my xj and mj. Pretty expensive when compared to autozone/rockauto prices but wayyyyyy better. My buddy went through 4 boxes from various retail stores before finding a decent one. Problem is I don't think they actually rebuild them. Just a reseal and paint dip. MiNi Beast Posted January 24, 2021 Share Posted January 24, 2021 i have always ran stock box even on 40s. only issues i everhad was the frame mount itself. so more important to upgrade to some reinforcements for the steering box. often why the rather upgrade from a 3 bolt box to a 4 bolt mounting boxes. But I'm just keeping it as original as possible i realy do want to upgrade the truck to 4 wheel drive and thats been a dream and a passion to accomplish that but given my circumstances i can't afford to do that I'm having a hard enough time keeping the truck together but just want to keep it stock ! its 2wheel drive commanche pioneer i had it from factory ! thanks my friend !! Mel Posted February 11, 2021 Share Posted February 11, 2021 Having owned and wheeled several ZJs and still have one with 35s I've never had a problem with the steering box.... It turns way easier than my MJ with 31s So I have to ask is the ZJ steering box a direct bolt in on the MJ? I might want to do this if it gives you better steering.
