88 MJ runs great "BUT" it won';t restart why?
Submariner replied to Submariner's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have not done c101 yet. I have done some new ground but not all yet. I was going to wait until I replaced the engine, tranny and added a transfercase and do all of while the engine is out. I think maybe I will have to do it sooner then later now. lol I have changed the ecu from an 88 model year to a 89 model year. -
88 MJ with a 4.0 in it. runs really good with 286K on it. BUT after you drive it for a while and turn it off, It won't restart. Give it 5 to 30 minutes then it will restart and runs fine. Won't do it every time, drive it for 5 miles or 20 miles don't matter. 3 out 0f 4 times it will restart then it won't. This would not be a problem if I was bar hoping but i got other things to do.LOL What are your suggestions or comments. right now I have ran out of ideas other then pulling the fuel tank and put in a new fuel pump and change the filter. Thanks

So what jeep did you get the seats from?

I was going to do this when I swapped engines and transmision and install a transfer case for the first time. I am taking out a 4.0 2wd ax15 and install a 4.0 4wd ax15/transfer case. Also I am changing the front fenders, doors, and grill from a 98 cherokee. I figured I would also replace the headlight wiring also. and install a tilt steering wheel with cruise control. Not going to do much stuff to the ole girl in the next few months HA FK HA

I have been lucky enough to acquire the wiring harness from an 89MJ that has a 4.0 engine. It does not have the c101 connection. I was wondering if I could plug that into the firewall box in an 88MJ that has a 4.0 engine. If it would be compatible then that would eliminate the c101 connection above the box. And I would not have to cut and splice all those wires. Has anyone done this or thought of doing it before? Do you think it is feasible?

Gauge cluster swap

ok, wiper circuit breaker makes sense because the wipers do not work and it was rust in place. I need to do some cleaning of the fuse box. there is a bit (LFOL) of corrosion in it. Just I really don't need the emissions timer and it does have cruise control but I do not know if it works. I first have to make it able to go down the road.

"New" 89 MJ, just needs a little (LOT) TLC
Submariner replied to Submariner's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Is there a place that I can get preformed sheet metal -
With the new year came a new to me MJ, $600. 89 Pioneer, 4.0 5sp 2wd, cruise control till wheel. Actual gages in the dash work. Engine runs fairly well seeing how it has sat for 6 years in a briar patch and has not be registered for 12 years. That is the good News. Now for the bad, clutch master cylinder froze up, rust in drivers floor board because the drivers window is broke, all the brakes are shot, tires are Bad. the door latch on the body is ripped off. Turnsignal lever is trashed, No parking lights but the headlights work. She is mostly straight but the paint sucks. How do you fix the rusty floorboads? the frame is intack. I will post pictures. So what do you think? suggestions on repairs to the floor would be helpfull

My 88 has a water leak. It sits out in the rain and the floor boards are wet. How do I find the leak and what have you all done to fix this problem other then park it the shop/carport. I am in the process of shifting the doors to 98 cherokee doors so now is the time to make the cabin water tight. I will be stripping most of the interior out with exception of the dash. then I will repaint the interior and put down some sound proofing as well as do some mods that cruiser 54 suggests. Thanks
-
I still have it and have been driving it for a while now. still 2wd but I got everything to transition it to a 4wd. I also will be doing some of the Cruiser54 things to her to help out as well as swap doors, fenders and grill from a 01. as well as fix the damn oil leak from the rear main seal. I have swaped axles to improve gear ratio to 3.54 instead of the 3.07 still the stock axles nothing better.
-
here is the donor vehicle to make her a prettier truck. this came home with a cracked block and head. and it only cost me $650. It had a set of good tires and a bad engine. I will figure out what to do with the rest of it.
-
in the year that I ahve had her, a few things have change. put in bucket seats, Replace the rear axle with one that has 3.55 gears instead of 3.07. place a dana 30 in front, still waiting to do the transmission/transfercase, added a lift, and put 31" tires w/offset rims. put a better rear bumper on her and have '98' fenders, front panel, grill, and doors standing in wings waiting to go one. She stills need to have her motor tinkered with but right now she is working.

At least you got one that has not many miles on it. Iwent from 214K to 287K on my odometer LOL not that it matters. Going to rebuild all the running gear anyway. -
I bought a parts truck
Submariner replied to kansashogan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hey Kansas, I did the same thing to an 86. except I paid out $300 and 75 in tow fees. I got my money back and got some parts I needed for my 88 MJ. I just sent a cab corner to Iowa. The poor ole 86, had a rusted out floor board and frame and a trash tranny. But there are lots of pieces and parts that are needed to keep other MJ's running and looking good. IN a way you will be keeping part of the ole truck alive thru another MJ. LOL hookie. Plus you should have a usable rear axle and bed.
