ComancheCrusher9800 Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Is the 1999 Jeep Cherokee a good year? The one I'm interested in is a 99 2 door 4×4 sport. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
ComancheKid45 Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Arguably the best run of the XJ, updated intake, new body style and still distributer ignition. I like mine but I personally prefer the look of the 96- body style.
87MJTIM Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Was '99 the first year of the 0331 cylinder head? Not a major drawback, but something to keep in mind.
FrankTheDog Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 1999 is a good year. Wifes has 243k on it with only minor issues. Mostly caused by neglect on part of the previous owner.
87Warrior Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Was '99 the first year of the 0331 cylinder head? Not a major drawback, but something to keep in mind. Some late '99's had the 0331 head and coil pack ignition (distributorless). I've only seen one in the flesh. Most have a distributor and the 0630 head.
ComancheCrusher9800 Posted June 28, 2018 Author Posted June 28, 2018 Just an Update. I did end up getting a 99 4.0 4×4 2-DoorSent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Dzimm Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Good find! 98-99 XJs are for sure argued as the best of the best. My advice, ditch those LED headlights and get a Rampage H4 conversion kit. Night and day difference. I will never use my set of those LEDs again.
DirtyComanche Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 You could buy actual good LED headlights too...
johnj92131 Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 From my own personal experience making 2 round trip coast to coast to coast trips. Truck-Lites are excellent in the Comanche. Low beam cut off is sharp, lighting pattern is excellent. High beam pattern is also excellent. Lighting distance is also excellent on the wide open interstates of the west. I actually like the Truck Lites better than the factory stock European E-code halogen headlights I have on my Passat TDI. Primarily because of the finite life time of the halogen bulbs. To be fair, I run extra bright halogen lamps with a light relay kit in the Passat. These halogen bulbs are 30% brighter but only about half the life span because the filaments run hotter. Have no experience with JW Speaker headlights and their pricing "seems" higher than Truck-Lite.

Part of the decision was that I run in wintertime. Back to the '99. I think the '99 can be better than the '98 XJ. I do have a '98 XJ. I think some of the '99 came with a distributor and the latter intake. OP didn't mention trans type.

I felt the high beam penetration on the E-codes was a bit better than the Truck-Lites but the Truck-Lites had better coverage on the low beams. Plus the LEDs drew about 1/8 the amperage, so it's a good swap IMO.
johnj92131 Posted June 29, 2018 Posted June 29, 2018 Don. Still plan to put the e-codes in the 86 Comanche and a relay harness. Then try a direct comparison between the 91 with Truck-Lites and the 86 with e-codes. Just not likely this summer.

I have Autopal on the MJ, they are no comparison to the Hella ecodes that are on the XJ. I like the Hella. I'm going with the JW Speaker for the MJ.
NHMJXJ Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I loved my 99 XJ and would be driving it today if some bonehead hadn't wrecked it on me. Never had a lick of trouble.
HOrnbrod Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 ^^ Thanks for getting back on topic. Yes, that was a gorgeous XJ. Those chrome Ravines look great..
