Nice Rear!!!...bumper

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what rear bumpers can be utilized for fit on my 87. I saw a 88 Ram Pickup at the JY with a serviceable bumper. Just wondering what other types of bumpers from vehicles members have used other than Fab'd ones. If so can ya let me know how much refab was done to accept donor.THX!!

True,

But what would look gooooood! Not trying to be funny, but I am in the same boat and I don't like the Westin ( looks too much like a FORD bumper) and I am not lookin for a off-road bumper.

Fey bumper

After much debate with self.....I may go with the Fey.

Finally got around to making up the receiver/bumper  brackets.

Or may still make up my own bumper......don't know yet.

Are you happy with yours? I like the chrome and that's the main reason I may go Fey.

Jury is still out......got a week or so to think about it.

Have you got any pics of yours from underneath? other angles?

Summit has them shipped for $239

These are factory bumper brackets:

The "factory" hitch uses spacers that may or may not be permanently attached to clear the bulge you can see between the bolt holes.

As you can see from tim's pic, the Fey brackets don't have the buldge:

I would assume this won't matter, as you'll still use the spacers for the width, and just have a gap of sorts. You may not need to run spacers if they're not permanently attached, although since the brackets on the factory hitch are welded to the cross bar, then you could encounter issues with proper spacing.

The other (probably bigger) issue you might run across is that the factory hitches are designed to sit right up against the bottom of the factory bumper (and sometimes is bolted to it). If the bottom of the Fey bumper is higher than the bottom of the stock bumper, then you'll simply have a gap, but if the bottom of the fey is lower, then you may have an interference fit of sorts. Don't actually know how the two compare.

I should add a disclaimer, this information is entirely based on some fairly extensive research I did before deciding to try building my own hitch. Beyond pictures, I've never actually seen a Fey bumper or its brackets, or a factory hitch. I think it would work, but maybe look a little funny, but again, I don't actually know it will work. If someone else who does know, or at least could address one of the two issues above, that would be great.

gogmorgo...THOSE are some pristine bumper mounts. Got some off eBay. Local shop said..."Yeah we could make those but you wouldn't want to pay us to do it." At lease they said it before just accepting the job.

Summit seems like a OK deal...but you are still spending $200 for a bumper...

I won't even say that I walked away from a pretty nice rear bumper and tail gate at the local YJ  two weeks before buying the MJ

(yes, kick me RIGHT there..it's already sore.)

Not my brackets. I pulled the pic off a thread on here from about six years ago, I think. There are some NOS bumper brackets on Ebay right now, I think they were at ~$150. (ouch...)

This summer I saw a rear MJ bumper in excellent shape at a JY as well, but only had a 3/8" socket set with me and couldn't turn the bolts to get it off. A week later I went back with a 1/2" set and a breaker bar, and still couldn't get them off due partly to rust but mostly to time constraints, so I soaked everything in PB blaster, and planned on going back the next week. And then never made it back. Given the yard in question and it's location, it may still be there the next time I'm back home (it looked like it had already been sitting there for several months, as there was grass growing above where the rear leaf springs had dug into the ground... rear axle was missing), but more than likely I just made it a whole lot easier for the next guy...

if you are savvy with a welder, i used 2x5" steel tube. cut it to length and angled the ends to match the body. took the original mounts and shortened them. welded it up. its simple an looks good. if you wanted a receiver it would be nothing to cut a hole in the center and weld it in.
