Minuit
Here we go, I know this has been asked a billion times but you can't beat a personalized recommendation. This is of course my '91 4.0. My muffler has recently started rattling which has made me think about redoing my exhaust. The pipes are in good shape themselves with a recently (2 months) replaced cat so I really don't want to go too drastic. I like the way my mostly stock system sounds but I wouldn't mind a little deeper and louder sound with as little ricer fart as possible but I'm not looking for a setup that annoys me and everyone else in the world. Just cutting stuff off isn't an option I would like to consider as I'm trying to keep my truck pristine as possible and I would like to be able to pass emissions if necessary. In a nutshell, I want a fairly conservative exhaust that I can live with on a day to day basis but still sound good. Thanks for any help! . :MJ 1: . onlyinajeep726
Cherry Bomb Pro muffler. Running one on my '96 XJ 4.0L HO and it sounds good without the ricer sound, but still grumbles enough to make her sound good. TheDirtyJeep401
:agree: I'm putting a glasspack on mine sometime soon, they sound great, I would suggest Cherry Bombs. they make a nice sound are fairly priced in my opinion.
GirsMJ86
I had a Flowmaster 40 on my '91 4.0L and it sounded really good, only thing I'd be willing to use behind a 4.0 now. Was loud when you'd gun it, but not in a ricer way, and had a nice growl to it when at idle/cruising. I thought I had a video, but there isn't any sound. :wall:

Have a 40 series on my '86 with a '95 4.0L Really nice low rumble. Love the sound it makes when you WOT
jeepsouth
Flow 40 here as well no cat, very happy with it. Should be better when the pacesetter goes in.
onlyinajeep726
I forgot to mention that I have a knock off FM40 on my XJ with a stroker. Sounds great but if you want it to be fairly conservative, I still think the CB Pro is a better option. If you're luck enough, your nearest muffler shop might let you hear your Jeep run with different mufflers to see which sound you like best before they weld it. dasbulliwagen
The Flowmaster 50 series adds an extra chamber to mellow out the loudness of a 40. Mine has a nice growl under load, but is fairly quiet at idle.
ComancheKid45
I'm a fan of the Flowtech Raptor mufflers myself, But wouldnt hesitate to go with any of the above ;)
Zebvance
I went with a pacesetter header to 2.5 inch pipe , to a high flow cat and a magma flow muffler dumping behind the cab. I think it sounds good and had a unique sound that most exhaust on 4.0s don't. Mine is a 88 btw. I have a video but let me find it.

I'm also looking to replace the glasspack and piping that is falling off my MJ before too long. I don't particularly want the loud sound... even before the tailpipe made its bid for freedom I was setting off car alarms when parked underground. Don't know if I want to go back to the glasspack to avoid doing much more of that. I'm leanign towards a FM50 , but haven't made up my mind yet. There's a really good exhaust shop about thrity miles up the road I'm planning to take it to for a custom stainless job later this summer when I've got a little more money, and I'll see what they recommend. Automan2164
FM 40/50. Had one on my '91 Elim, '98 ZJ, and just installed one on my '97 XJ. Rob
AMCJeepMJ
I'll be the guy stating to use an OEM equivalent muffler, as quieter is better especially if you live in a suburban setting. You don't want to be aggravating your neighbors when you go out to warm up your rig in the winter at 5:30 in the morning. However, if you want to push the envelope, try side pipes: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pte-h1050/overview/

GrizzzzBear
I Like the Glasspacks. I already got my "Purple Hornie" from Summit. $30 with Clamps. I may think about the Vortex or Pro Muffler, were I to not like the Glasspack.

rylee144
Anyone have a link to a stock muffler for an 88 4.0. The loud drone isnt ideal for hunting and the kids hate it. Going to go back to stock.
