the first day i had it i had 3 offers to buy it. i love this truck.

:rotf: Nice. I think my current tally is at 4 offers since April. I'm always willing to sell my MJ, as long as the price is 30 grand and a J10 with a built 401.

I am one of the few on this forum that remember when they first came out. The wife and I both liked how they looked. You also must remember that back in that era, Comanche's main competition was Chevy S10, Ford Ranger, Mazda (can't recall), Datsun and Toyota. The amount of torque it produced was quite cutting edge. Of couse, AMC did their best to counter act it by messing up the gearing but still.

Now, there arent very many of them left and many people don't even know they existed.

i do remember when they first came out and thought they looked better than the small fords and gm's. never was big on amc though so didn't pay much attention to them. i've had this one for 3 days now and i'm hooked allready.

Jeeps used to be rugged, durable, utility vehicles.

Station wagons, open universals, and PICK UP TRUCKS.

It was that way for almost 50 years, till Chrysler axed the Jeep pickup.

Even when Kaiser & AMC moved the station wagons upscale,

they always offered lower priced stripped down versions as well.

In the 1960's when the "Super Wagoneers" had power everything, V8, AC, auto trans etc etc,

you could still get a rock bottom priced stripped down sedan delivery version of the Waggy with just 2 doors, roll up Windows, and one seat.

Same with pickups,

No one offered full time 4wd, ac, auto trans, etc in a pickup in the 1970's when Jeep did.

But just because you could get a maxed out J truck,

didn't mean AMC stopped offering the cheap 6cyl 3 speed stripped down version for UTILITY use.

Now,

there are no stripped down Grands

there are no pick ups,

loaded, or stripped.

theres really not even any stripped down universals anymore.

Jeep = expensive = maximum profit = rugged image, with almost no utility use anymore.

Luxury 4x4's with some token little Jeeps that get so-so mileage, catering to the Subaru crowd, and universals that keep some of the original focus alive, while being 3x's the size of the flat fendered originals.

So inexpensive little Jeeps like the MJ bring back the OLD Jeep image of utility,

Instead of the Ugg boots, gold chains, and purse dog image of Jeep today.

Oh, and a pick up with JEEP across the tailgate is just cooler than a truck that says anything else :)

/rant off

By the way,

A partial remedy for this would be a stripped down, rock bottom priced LWB JK with 2 doors, a HALF CAB,.manual trans, D44's, no rug, cheap seats, and limited options.

Hell,

they could even do just a special limited run of them in 2 or 3 high visibility colors,

for people that wanted a real truck, anyone building a crawler,

or even just for dealers to park on a pedestal in front of the showroom & bring in customers.

But Jeep likes the image they have right now,

they don't want to change it, or put any actual utility back into it.

As long as people are still slapping 24" wheels on, and rolling through rap videos with them,

and parking them across from the Benz's & Lexus' at the country clubs,

Mission Accomplished!

I once had a lady tell me that she thought my MJ was the neatest, coolest, most beautiful, best running machine she had ever seen her life. She sounded so sincere I unlocked the door and let her out.

You are a sick man. Do you have a book with this stuff in it? :rotf:

I just have people ask me, "Why does it say Jeep on it if it's a truck?" Well, maybe because it's a pickup truck built by Jeep, but I just say its a 1989 Jeep Comanche and they say, "Oh, thats cool!" I like how available and cheap most parts are for my MJ and its super fun to go mudding with. Some jobs on a Comanche are definately easier to do than others, but everyone who knows about comanches will agree they run forever with a bit of maintenence, or just tell me,"Man, a Comanche is a damn good truck".

Yesterday I got a little (read very) stuck on top of a snow pile. My habit of parking this winter has involved pushing as far into the snow piles as I can so my back end doesn't stick out three feet past the tiny cars most college kids are driving. Instead of going into it in I climbed over the really dense drifted pile and sat the cab down on it... Tow truck moved himself further than he moved me trying to get me out...

But while I was waiting for the tow truck to show, I was talking to a guy with a 3/4 ton who was pulling out a Sunfire, and we walked over to where my truck was, saw the writing on the tailgate, kinda jumped a bit and asked "Is that a Jeep?" and just kinda stood there staring at it in stunned silence for a bit before he just said "cool."

Even so stuck I was spinning at idle in 4lo, this guy, with his big shiny jacked up Chevy was just in awe of my decrepit little truck. Made up for having to get a tow.

I dreamed the other day that I died and went to heaven. I was met at the pearly gates by Steve McQueen. He was riding an Triumph TR6, he stopped and put the kickstand down as I stood there on the other side, then waved for me to follow him. He didn't say a word. I followed him through what seemed miles of fields of beautiful poppies and moning glories and wind blown trees and grass lined prairies, although it actually took only a second...then we stopped at a garage and he lifted up the sliding door. On the other side, as the door lifted, I first observed some boots, and as it rose, it exposed John Wayne, and a beautiful Willys MB behind him, and on his right was the Gipper in his CJ7. John casually remarked, "Hey Steve, you ready". Steve said, "Oh yeah". Then John hopped in the MB, and Steve jumped in a early CJ5 which was nestled in the back. They cranked the engines, and I said, "Hey, who do I ride with?", then John Wayne said, "Get your own damn Jeep you Sally!" Slightly perturbed at his insult, I looked in the back of the garage, and there was an MJ. As picture perfect as any Jeep Comanche could be, it sat in the corner of that dark garage as if it were waiting for me, put there by God himself. As I turned my eyes to the MJ, beams of light erupted from it and spread to the horizon in every direction and the engine turned on by itself and I could see the unibody softly rocking from side to side with every rev of the engine. I walked over and opened the door, it was an 4x4 Eliminator with all the options, I sat inside,,,,dropped the clutch and slid it into 1st gear and for a second gazed at Steve McQueen and John Wayne looking over their shoulders waiting for me to pull out of the garage to go wheeling with them in that great offroad park in the sky. I tried to follow the Gipper out. But, the engine died and wouldn't crank again,,,I thought it was the ballast resistor...

Then my F*&^#*%^ alarm went off, and I flopped out of bed,,,swearing I will never drink Tequila again.

I'm one of the few Gary. When I saw one (an 87 in print w. the 4.0L) and read the specs I loved it. Unfortunately I was in an overseas locale where they were made out of unobtanium. Since we were limited to a single personal vehicle, I satisfied myself by driving gov XJs and a few personal XJs when I could and enjoyed the hell out of out climbing, out accelerating, and generally out performing the various Toy J-series junk, the mountain king at the time, and other Asian stuff. The only vehicle that came close was a Daewoo Korando, pictured below, that was a CJ copy. It took quite a few years before getting back, and the first Stateside vehicle purchase was the one I have now. And will always have.

Though 2 things about the ad scare me just a little

"converted" (I guess that means they added a turbo)

And "$4500"

:)

Awesome awesome vehicle that I would love to own,

banging gears in a 40+MPG pick me up,

but I don't have $4500 to invest in a fourth pick up truck at the moment.

Reminds me of a Subaru Brat. I secretly have always like those little things

I'm guilty of that as well. At the car dealership up the road from me, they've got a Subaru Baja proudly displayed front and center. Want that too.

its 400lbs less than a cherokee with the same drivetrain

and we can haul more than a cherokee with the metric ton package

if your in a emissions testing area, you have higher limits than a cherokee, because your a "truck"

. :MJ 1: .
