When I had my new driveshaft built, the guy said in 14 years of business he's never seen one of those vulcanized shafts balance properly. Don't really know what they were thinking. Maybe when the shaft was brand new it reduced NVH slightly? Only thing I can think of.

Rubber sheath? I call it an annoying pain in the @$$ that turns your truck into a paint shaker after a while.

Clean Bonestock Base 92 MJ - FL
Minuit replied to HOrnbrod's topic in Craigslist/Marketplace/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Sadly, that lasted even into the 97+ XJs. Less common by the year, but they were still out there. -
I've been following his progress with these for a while. To say it's a very impressive piece of kit is a huge understatement.

Would. Three things make an MJ valuable to me - solid, straight, stock. Worn out parts can be fixed. I've replaced a fusebox on a manual truck with less than half the miles. It's not that bad of a job - just "liberate" a fusebox out of an automatic XJ. Unless it's been meticulously cared for I would expect some fusebox damage.

Clean Bonestock Base 92 MJ - FL

No "audio system" jutting out between the seats? $100 max. In all honesty this seems like it would be a really nice truck. Never seen the red pinstripes on the front clip and tailgate before, I kinda like those. -
I'd like to know who runs it as well.

Turn signal Gremlins
Minuit replied to Crassis-Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Cheaper, faster, and perfectly adequate for the requirements. Sounds good to me. My argument has never been "crimps are better than soldering" - my argument is that, if held to a proper standard, they are just as effective, maybe more depending on the situation, as solder joints. If I needed a wire splice to hold my weight, even though I sound like a "crimp guy" (I'm not), I would use a soldered lineman splice. That would not be useful for pinning up a connector. Likewise, crimps would be absolutely useless for replacing capacitors in a radio. If I need a repeatable, relatively fast, and simple to use connection between exactly two wires of the same size that I could do just as well lying on my back under a dashboard in the middle of the night in pouring rain, I bring out my crimper. I think we've $#!& up the poor guy's thread enough now -

We can just agree to disagree, honey. I play with electronics every now and then. Solder joints are a constant pain in my @$$. I have never once had a proper crimp connection come loose, and trust me, on my trucks, a LOT of vibrations have been pumped into them. That's not to say they're perfect, and don't take this as me preferring one over another - they have their places. But there's a lot more to crimping things than most people realize. Here is an article that contains some valuable insights I think. -

So then what say you about the hundreds of crimp connections the factory put there? Proper crimps are as reliable, possibly more, than solder joints. The key word there is proper. Mashing the $#!&ty red and blue connectors you get from Autozone with a pair of pliers is not proper. My silver truck has about 30 crimp connections that I've made. My red truck has probably double that. No problems, because I make an effort to do it right with proper connectors and equipment. I've also practiced and adjusted my tools to provide good, consistent performance. If you're going to use those plier-type cut, crimp, strip tools and junk connectors, don't bother trying to crimp things. Just like soldering, you need the proper tools and practice with them. A quality ratcheting crimper and connectors from a reputable brand should be considered the bare minimum for a quality repair. -
Genssi 80W CREE LED White 1156 Reverse Lights
Minuit replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I see free shipping here. BTW, my LEDs are still going strong. -
I hope he does buy this ludicrously overpriced truck, which by the way was bought by the current owner for MUCH less. It makes mine ever so slightly more valuable as a result.
-
Your truck is really coming together! Stance of it looks great. Don't mean to hijack but I finally found an intact underhood light. Thanks for the info

Yowza. If they were actually worth that much I'd be unbolting mine and converting to actual bucket seats!

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I never really had THAT much trouble getting the axle lined back up. I used the factory bottle jack to move the axle around (I could just leg press the axle around but the jack gives you more control), combined with a floor jack right behind the mount. I recall the driver side lining right back up, the passenger side was a little more difficult. My old LCA bushings were severely worn and installing new ones pushed the axle further out - that probably accounts partly for why it's such a PITA sometimes. If it makes my MJ handle and/or ride better by turning the control arm around I'm gonna do it.
-
The WJ has the oval bushing on the axle end. I have the oval on mine at the frame end. Maybe I'll flip them around and see if it makes any difference.

When you mentioned you checked the fuses, did you make sure they were getting power? The fusebox is a potential problem spot on any manual Comanche due to clutch fluid leakage. If they are, my next step would be to make sure the radio is getting power on both its constant and ignition switched circuits, as well as ground. If the radio is getting power on both circuits as well as ground, the radio is bad. A simple multimeter or test light will be fine. The radio is on the dome light circuit, so any problems getting power with the dome light circuit will also affect the radio. As to radios.. if you're interested in going OEM, look in my signature. There's a big list of all of the factory options there.

Quick upgraded oil filter nipple question...
Minuit replied to coolwind57's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I like to pre-fill my filters if possible. The 4.0 in my '91 takes a couple of seconds to show oil pressure after a filter change. -

My 91 also points the filter to the sky. Will probably change that once I do the 96 AC conversion. Super convenient to change, worthless as far as filling it up goes. -
The black 750s look perfect IMO. Hmm, there are some that need some restoration going for fairly low prices...

Check the foam gaskets where the heater tubes and blower motor meet up with the dash. They're probably fossilized by now and not sealing properly. That was my problem. -
Stock and well kept old Jeeps impress me far more than someone throwing a Quadratec catalog at their JK.

Every now and then I think about picking up a pair of these. Then I look at my bank account and change my mind They do look great, though. The OEM fogs I put on a few years ago are already starting to look a little dingy. But I'd have to have them in black...

What Minuit knows about stock Jeep radios
Minuit replied to Minuit's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
Going through eBay listings for radios always gives me a laugh... half of them just copy the format I use for my listings. One of the ones up now literally copied my title and left the same, incorrect part number for a radio I sold months ago.
