Here's my perspective as one of the vendors for this challenge. I won't say how many of my radios are out there, but suffice it to say it's a small enough number such that each individual sale is important. The whole idea of giveaways is that it's a tradeoff: you have to get enough goodwill and PR to make the giveaway worth it. On such a small scale, why would I give something away that I could sell for money? There's not enough eyes on this to give away a product I could sell instead. Then there's the potential for the recipient to be someone who doesn't care about a refurbished factory radio, and decide to sell it to someone who would otherwise be my customer. In that case not only have I shot myself in the foot, I've cut my leg off too. CC is small. The participating businesses are small and produce products with a lot of time and material investment in them. That said, I don't consider CC being small a problem. It's one of its greatest attributes.

Here's mine. It's too high in the back for me so I'll be leveling it ~1". I'm not a fan of the "dog in heat" look... if you know what I mean. A little rake is nice, but imo 2wd MJs have a little bit too much. Same stance on my '89, but it has a softer ride so I think it has softer springs(???) As for leveling it... not sure whether I want to lift the front or lower the rear. I'm thinking lowering the rear.

10W-30 synthetic in my AX-15. After getting rid of what I assume must have been GL-5, it shifts a little better.

I think they used the all caps into early 87, but had transitioned to the regular ones by the end of 87. I've seen all caps badges on a few 87s, enough for it not to be a coincidence.

Another option that uses all OEM parts is to get the cross-body from a 91 or 92 XJ with power windows. The only wiring required is to swap a few wires around on the driver side if it was a 4dr XJ that the harness came from. That would also give you a very easy jumping off point if you ever wanted to add power mirrors - you'd just need to add the switch and mirrors themselves. You'd need 91+ doors to match.

Dynamat by itself? Not really. Maybe on the roof and the doors. The 1/4" of closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl that I put over it? Absolutely!

Forgot to mention - before I installed it I unfolded it and left it for a day or so.

I got the mass backing. It fit fine after I trimmed the multiple square feet of extra carpet off. The standard backing is cheap garbage and seemed to me like it would barely survive installation, let alone removal later on if necessary. The mass backing's construction is virtually identical to the OEM carpet. I was also installing it over 1/4" total of closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl. You should not have to heat gun the carpet. I did not and it fit well everywhere except the back ridge in the floor which is "just ok" My guess is that you still need to trim some more to make it fit. You do have to trim A LOT.

Yeah, not worth fixing that tank when new tanks are readily available. I'd be surprised if it didn't already have a couple of small holes.

Keep it simple, but there are some improvements we can make that won't take away from simplicity. Also like the idea of putting the "what did you do to your MJ" thread somewhere prominent. Auto-play videos or pop-ups are right out obviously. But would it be too much to add something to the front page? Maybe a slideshow of recent pics people have uploaded or something like that. Maybe a vendor spotlight, maybe events like the scavenger hunt. But I do agree, it can't take away from the simple down-to-business charm of the site layout as it is. Don't take this the wrong way - but Comanche Club needs to stay Comanche Club. That doesn't mean someone with a Wrangler or Renix XJ or whatever can't come ask us something, but IMO the less Facebooky this site is the better. We have a collection of some of the most mature, knowledgeable, and helpful people in the Jeep community and very little of the lowest common denominator. I think it needs to stay that way. Scope creep is an evil thing, maybe even more evil than subforums.

Ditto to this. Events like the scavenger hunt could be on there as well - it would be nice to have a front page that served some other purpose than being the thing you click away from to see the forums.

If you don't want to splice connectors, the 95-96 XJ fan is a little better than stock but uses the old connector too.

I have done something recently. Not much, but something. Remember the Briarwood dash bezel I got a long time ago and then didn't mention again? At the old age of 21 I have officially become an old man. I think it looks excellent. I've been wondering how the AMC decks shape up to the Chrysler decks in my system. To justify more screwing around, I made up an excuse - the testing of a new product I'm probably going to be offering soon: a 13-pin Jeep to AMC radio adapter. For those not in the know, the 85-87 AMC decks have about 6 inches of wire coming out of them rather than a connector that plugs right into the radio. My adapter adds about 6 more inches of wire. Add to that my amp install (which piggybacks off the factory wiring) and the fact that my radio harness is longer than stock as it is, and the logistics of fitting all this stuff into the radio cavity becomes rather difficult: That's better. It almost looks clean! For those in a similar predicament, there's a lot of unused space off to the right of where the radio would be. Stuff as much of your wiring as you can in there. Also, if you can't tell, I like electrical tape. Here's the end result. The AMC radio I chose to test is my RX-161, recently liberated from the '89. It has an aux input and was ready to go. I wish it was the version with the green display, but oh well. It even works the power antenna! Is it sacrilege to put a radio out of a Grand Wagoneer in a lowly Comanche? So how does it sound compared to my RX-171 that I've had in there for a while? Pretty similar actually. A little warmer, maybe. Definitely not as powerful, and if you don't have an amp to do the heavy lifting I'd go easy on the volume, as these tend to run hot with a full complement of 4 ohm speakers. I really do recommend an amp if you choose to run an AMC radio in 2017. Tune the gain right and you'll get all the volume you've ever wanted while not stressing the radio, and not turning your volume knob into an on-off switch. As much as I like the '91 Jeep radios, the AMC ones just look right. Speaking of speakers, I recently killed one of my Jensen Accusound factory dash tweeters. I've been wanting to go with a real component system up front for a while anyway. Stay tuned.

How many of you knew you could get a factory CD player in your XJ circa 1993? Think the AMC decks are rare? You have no idea. Obviously, this CD player is not mine - it belongs to Don.
