The sad thing about our trucks is they tend to have been beaten on very hard, not well cared for (parked outside in the sun every day all day for 20+ years), or are just getting old. The ones that have had easy lives are usually nice but the nice ones tend to not be sold. Another thing to remember is that on the grand scheme of things Comanches are very rare. Jeep only made 191,000 of them over 6 years - they made more Cherokees than that in 1989 alone. But good things come to those who wait. If you keep looking, you're bound to find one you like. :thumbsup: Mind sharing some pics of your other cars? :brows:

Driveway Ornament To Daily Driver A really quite long build thread by Minuit The Beginning: March-November 2012 Why hello there, viewer! If you're reading this for the first time, I think I should probably explain some things first. This build is now entering its fifth sixth year. It started shortly before I turned 16 years old, and I had absolutely no prior mechanical experience, so keep this in mind when reading the first few pages. I can say with absolute certainty that some of the things you see early on in this build were not properly done and should not be used as an example of how to do things! However, I have not edited any of this after posting it other than to remove blatantly wrong information. In the early stages of this build, I am teaching myself how to work on automobiles, and I am doing many of the things you see in the thread for the very first time. This truck was built on April 17, 1991, rolled off the line at Toledo at 12:55 PM, and was purchased new by my grandparents on November 22, 1991 at Underhill Motors in Dickson, TN. In late 2003, its fuel pump failed and the truck was not driven until I took ownership of the truck in 2012. It had not been moved from the spot it was sitting in since it was first parked there in 2003. If you want an exact date, I guess you could say that this build officially began on March 10, 2012 when the fuel pump was first purchased, or April 29, 2012 when the truck was first started and moved under its own power and fuel supply. I take this build very seriously. Every decision I make is carefully thought out. There will be no cutting of fenders, bed bobbing, or 35" tires in this thread. In an attempt to keep at least a fraction of the truck's history intact, I have a few rules that I follow very strictly: 1. No permanent modifications are allowed. The truck must be able to be returned to its completely original form with bolt-on parts only. The only permanent modification (that isn't a repair) to the truck's structure that is allowed is drilling holes that are pre-punched at the factory. Factory options that are added must be done in a way that's indistinguishable from stock to an observer. The specifics might not be stock, but it damn well better look stock. 2. If at all possible, parts should be correct for a 1991 model year truck. Exceptions are allowed if a later model part is clearly superior (for example, 1997+ door limiting straps that prevent damage to the door hinges) If reasonable, the original parts from the truck should be kept. 3. At no time is this truck to be driven off-road without a very, very good reason. I have other vehicles to abuse. 4. Aftermarket customizations are not allowed. Wheels, radios, etc. are to be OEM parts only. If there's a specific goal to this project, it's to create the best, most pure example of a street driven Jeep Comanche I possibly can. Even almost 5 years after starting, that goalpost is a very long way away. After replacing the fuel pump, the truck started immediately without smoke or hesitation. At this point it had a deep knocking sound coming from the rear of the engine. Although a number of mechanics identified it as a rod knock, it was coming from loose torque converter bolts! Tip: If you are experiencing a loud knocking sound and have an automatic transmission, check first for loose torque converter bolts and/or a cracked flexplate. Tip: A common theme in this thread will be this: Always verify the source of the problem yourself. Eliminate easy solutions first before jumping to the worst possible situation. Not much work happened for a few months, but I did start driving it regularly. I took quite a liking to how it drove and how it looked, even though it still was mangled from a front end collision several years back. I started learning as much about these trucks and how to work on them as possible. Christmas: December 24, 2012 The front end of the truck was damaged by a deer hit sometime in the early 2000s. After nearly getting sucked into the fan, I decided it needed to be replaced. There's a big time skip between the first part of this post and the next. The previous chapter was added on later. This chapter will be left unchanged so you can laugh at how naive I was a year and a half ago. Since getting it out from under a tree a year ago, my MJ has been faithfully serving me with very few issues. Even though it's "old", it's kept up with the best in terms of reliability and functionality. Now that school is out now and it's summer, it's time to fix stuff. I figure I have about 11 weeks to get it up and running, better than before. This isn't going to be a complete tear-down and rebuild, but I do certainly plan on going through it meticulously. I'm also trying to keep cost down as money is very tight right now. Here's how it looks today, the second day of teardown. Total cost of restoration: $140 (headliner + sunvisors) The seat before I took it out. It has been covered since the truck was brand new. From what I can tell, the metal is still sound with no holes. I'm going to get the grinder after this and paint it once I'm done getting the interior apart. As you can see from the first picture, the cowl is covered up with plastic currently because it's leaking water, which is for sure the source of the passenger side rust. The driver's side floorboard is dry, however. I'd say the jute padding is probably ruined. This will probably be a fast-paced build so check back frequently! This truck honestly does not need much to be considered 'restored' so as far as restorations go this is fairly minor. I am a 17 year old unemployed car guy, so that will probably be its own problem. I'm definitely not interested in half-@$$ing this. I'm going to do justice to this truck and fix everything correctly. It may cost more or take more work, but I can deal. Tentative plans for the next month or so: - Renew interior, including new headliner, refreshed seat and interior panels - Repair floorboard rust and plug any water leaks - Replace muffler (it's rattling quite badly) - Repair minor exterior damage (scratches, small dents) - Fix air conditioning (obviously a job for a shop) -
Here's an actual useful answer: The best source for unobtainium like sending units is this forum, bar none. If you look around long enough, someone is bound to have what you need.

Yeah, your gauge will read backwards. You can't (easily) swap between HO and Renix clusters due to the Renix's cable speedometer. In 91 all of the gauges went fully electric.

I get it quite a bit even though MJs in this part of the country seem to have held up quite well. When someone asks me to sell it, the answer is always different but never reasonable. I'll never sell it with all the work that I've put into it over the past year.

Where Can I Find Rattle Can Oem Paint?

I ordered some paint from AutomotiveTouchup for my Silver Star Metallic MJ, and while the spray paint is fine, the 2oz bottle is about two-three shades too dark. I eventually decided to mix it with Duplicolor's Bright Silver Metallic. The clearcoat is pretty good though. -

I like it. Good product. I don't really have any personal anecdotes about its effectiveness on my MJ because even though I put 1/2 of the can in through the throttle body and let it sit as directed, I didn't smoke much and I noticed no difference between before and after. That being said, my engine's always been smooth, but it hasn't seen much corn gas in its life until recently and about 2/3 of the miles are all highway.

An Oil Filter Is An Oil Filter Right?????

Oh dear, the only thing that people ever agree on in terms of oil filters is do not use Fram products under any circumstance ever if you remotely care about your engine. I use Bosch filters without trouble. They sure look better on the engine than that ugly orange can of death too. On K&N stuff: I'm of the opinion that their 'performance' gimmick is nothing but marketing and has little to no effect on actual operation of the vehicle. Jim's toilet paper is probably better at keeping crap out of engines than a K&N air filter and I don't imagine the oil filters are much better. Purolator and Bosch are the way to go for oil filters if you ask me. Anything but K&N for air filters. Another thing you should know: I feel like a master mechanic nearly every time I go into a parts store and I'm 17. Don't ever bet your life on the knowledge of a parts monkey. -

Your truck is most likely already wired for power locks and windows, you just need the equipment. Any high-trim XJ up to '95 will have most of what you need and will swap in without too much trouble but the higher you go up in option levels the harder it is to find a manual. The Comanche does have several specific interior components, but a good portion of the interior will swap directly from an XJ. I believe you can also swap for the 91-96 front clip, which is a little easier to find parts for in my experience. Avoid a '96 donor if possible, it was a weird year with a lot of non-matching parts. :needpics: -
Some (very very few) 2.5s had the AW4 behind them, which is probably the most reliable transmission ever offered in the Jeep lineup, but most automatic 2.5s had the A904. Be warned, an automatic 2.5 truck will be an absolute dog no matter what. If you're converting to an auto, look for an AW4. Not sure on the bell housing you need though.

If you're going to fix something, do it properly. You don't know how much trouble quickly thrown together repairs can cause later on especially if you ever sell it. A cheap fix becomes an expensive problem later on. And don't take it to a shop unless you have to. Just from minor things (serpentine belts, idler pulley, diff fluid, etc) my math tells me I've saved almost $300 in the past two months doing the work myself.

I'm not sure if anyone who just rattlecans Turbines like that should be allowed near a whole Jeep of any kind let alone a Comanche. I would like to see properly done black turbines, though.

I recently bought a bottle and a spray can of touch up paint from Automotivetouchup.com. I've tested the spray paint and the color is a near perfect match for my truck's paint. The bottle paint, however, is noticeably darker than my paint (a couple shades at least.) I'm aware that this is probably because of my paint fading over time, and I want to lighten the bottle touchup paint to match it. I have a general idea of how I'm going to do this (mix the touchup paint with a lighter shade of metallic model paint), but any advice that y'all can give me would be really appreciated.

Here we go, I know this has been asked a billion times but you can't beat a personalized recommendation. This is of course my '91 4.0. My muffler has recently started rattling which has made me think about redoing my exhaust. The pipes are in good shape themselves with a recently (2 months) replaced cat so I really don't want to go too drastic. I like the way my mostly stock system sounds but I wouldn't mind a little deeper and louder sound with as little ricer fart as possible but I'm not looking for a setup that annoys me and everyone else in the world. Just cutting stuff off isn't an option I would like to consider as I'm trying to keep my truck pristine as possible and I would like to be able to pass emissions if necessary. In a nutshell, I want a fairly conservative exhaust that I can live with on a day to day basis but still sound good. Thanks for any help! . :MJ 1: .

Yup. Renix through the 1990 model year. First HO's were 91 models.
