The first thing you should always check in the case of a knock is the flex plate. Make sure the bolts on it are tight also. I had 2 mechanics say mine was a rod about to come loose. It wasn't.

Which Mj Would You Consider More Desireable?
Minuit replied to badazzelanore's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Since I already have more than enough automatic vehicles (1) I would take the 89 assuming it ran well. An SWB roll bar if it's original is quite rare but I would try to negotiate the price down to at the very most $2750 or so keeping in mind that the value of MJs seems to be going up a lot recently but I wish I could make decisions like these. Assuming there's no problems you can't go wrong. Where are you located? All I see for sale recently around here are automatic 86s and badly lifted Renix trucks. -
New To Mj's Looking At One This Week.
Minuit replied to 01yellowxj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Factory rated @ 2000 lbs. Of course, that's if the bumper is in tip-top shape and structurally sound. You don't state where you are from, but if the MJ rear step bumper is a 20+ year old original and you are from a rust-prone area, I wouldn't tow a bicycle with it. These bumpers rust out fast. I tow a similar sized trailer with motorcycles occasionally with no problems towing or stopping, but have a frame reciever hitch, rear disk brakes, 31s and 4.10s with the D44 and an AW4. The key is the receiver hitch, and as airspeed says, very tough to find now for an MJ. :agree: My bumper is completely rusted through on one part of the bottom 'frame'. I have no idea how that happened but I wouldn't trust it in a situation involving potentially mine or others' lives. I might see about modifying a Fey bumper to have the same end caps for a more original look. Good to see another TN MJ guy! If the light is 'MAINT REQD' (not sure if the 90 and older have those) it's just a warning saying you need to replace your oxygen sensor which comes on at about 82k. The best way to fix it is to just remove the bulb next time you have the cluster off. Post pics of your own! We like pics here. -

The driver's side was leaking from where the engine bay harness goes into the firewall. Without removing the junction, silicon sealant is about the only way to seal it up. The passenger side leaked (and still does mostly) through the blower motor seal (the most common cause of passenger side floor rot on MJs), cowl (water came from the spot in the picture, and only under direct water pressure i.e. hose) and antenna grommet. Very few of the XJ gaskets are still in production to my knowledge, which sucks if you're like me and 1. hate silicon sealant with a passion and 2. like to do things in a way that at least looks original. If someone can point me to a source that sells real gaskets and seals for these trucks then I will be eternally grateful.

It's really odd how different you can make a 4.0 sound with exhaust. So much better than the typical piped trucks we see down here. I've never heard a 4.0 that sounds anything like mine and I have a (theoretically) stock exhaust.
-
Very nice. Do your actual turn signals/high beams work? If so you've likely got a bad cluster as you probably know already. What's the build date (should be on the sticker on the driver door)? If it has a 92 build date that makes it a very nice find indeed.
-
If you're implying that the tachometer will be incompatible since it's a 2.8, that is not the case. Clusters used in 4.0 rigs will read correctly if put into a 2.8 rig since there are the same number of cylinders, thus the same number of pulses per revolution to trigger the tach. IIRC there are some minor differences between 86 and 87-90 clusters.
-
The top right is the production date. i.e. mine was finished on 4/17/91 at 12:55.
-
It's basically the second half of the build sheet IIRC. I found mine under my seat where it was from the factory. It lists stock specs as you would see it in Chrysler's database. Stuff like tire size, color code, serial number, and the date it rolled off the factory. That's mine with the most important stuff edited back in. The coolest thing IMO is the exact date and time of production, in the top right.

Posted pictures via photobucket. . . still not there? Don't know about the first part, the truck is for sale in my town, Woodbury, Middle TN. Thanks for that little bit of info on the tranny. I had no idea the comanche came with any other auto other than the AW4. Just how bad is the torqueflight? Can it be swapped for an AW4? I am pretty sure that would be a no, but just in case. I already know that 4.0 is b*@$£ to swap into an 86 so that is another mark against it, but if thngs go south at least we the option of swapping in the 2.5 Oh, okay, it isn't the one I'm talking about. It's a 904 three speed, old style hydraulic so none of the AW4 wiring will be there. If I were your friend I would wait to get one the way I wanted it. The one rely posted will be almost the exact same, except it has the TBI 2.5. The body looks pretty good though. Why are there always so many 86s for sale in TN? :hmm:

Florida did this and it ended up with the state losing around $150,000 with less than a 3% failure rate. Not all poor people are deadbeat drug addicts who chose this path. Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/18/us/no-savings-found-in-florida-welfare-drug-tests.html?_r=0

Is this the one with all of the stickers on the back? Keep in mind that a 86 auto will be a TorqueFlite and not an AW4 and that with a 2.hate in front of it it will be almost painfully slow. Other than that, sounds like a good beater or restoration project depending on your friend's goals.

Very nice. I don't suppose you plan on keeping that windshield? :D

Driveway Ornament To Daily Driver: 7 Years!
Minuit replied to Minuit's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Not much has happened with the MJ recently, so I'll just think to myself. I'd love some other suggestions, also! Planned Upgrades: Sometime When I Have Money - V8 ZJ tie rod assembly: For the sake of upgrading, mostly. This truck will see light wheeling at most. I'm going to replace all this stuff already, so why not upgrade? - V8 ZJ sway bar assembly: For road manners. This truck already handles remarkably well for being a half mile off the ground, but why not make it better? - New springs: Either from a 4wd XJ or just a replacement. It's either really sagged in the front on unusually high in the back. Not too much lift, though. Perfectly level trucks aren't used as trucks and a forward rake looks cool and I want an original looking truck. I'll have to measure the ride height to make up my mind. - WJ brake master cylinder: My brakes as they are are merely sufficient. Merely sufficient is not good enough. - Upgraded headlight wiring with H4 housings and bulbs: Once again, my headlights need replacing, so why not go just a little further? - A better rear axle, preferably with limited slip: Preferably an 8.25 (easy find in the JY with some mods required) to keep things in the family but 4.10s are fairly common on Ford 8.8s (also easy find in the JY with the same mods required.) 0-60 in 8 seconds appeals to the little kid in me. This truck probably has quite a bit of highway driving in its future which is a good argument to keep the 3.55s. My stupid open diff makes wet roads annoying to drive on. - Upgraded fuel injectors: Fuel injectors aren't at their best by 150k so if I'm going to pull them out, I might as well put better ones back in. All of these are fairly simple upgrades except for yanking out the rear axle, which is a long term thing since my D35 (somehow) seems to have nothing wrong with it and the gears looked excellent when I changed the gear oil earlier this year. I'm welcome to any suggestions. -
No problem

I think if you hit backspace with the 'start from scratch' line selected it'll go away. Cool little toy and I need a commemorative front plate

I'm partial to Jeep wheels myself. I've never found an aftermarket set of wheels that matched the style and 'feel' of my truck, but then again I'm very (extremely) particular about what I'll put on my truck. It's your choice and if you like it, do it. To help you make your mind up, here's those wheels (similar ones anyway) Photoshopped onto your truck. The perspective and size are a bit off and I assumed that you would run them with center caps but it should give you some idea.

Let's bring this back! 1. I didn't really care much about Jeeps until about 2 years ago. 2. I absolutely can't stand being pitied. 3. I tend to obsess about a small number of things and try to learn everything about them. Don't under any circumstances ask me to go into detail about cars even though it's something I like to talk about. 4. I cannot, without looking it up, spell the word 'guarantee' 5. I am probably the 2nd or 3rd youngest active CC poster.

Jim  I've always liked this one. ^^ the most recent one I have.

 Awesome. I love the shell casing trip button.

Seems fairly well planned out to me. How cold does it normally get up there?

My MJ will see as few shops as possible because I have very little patience for incompetence on the part of people who don't care. If something screws up because of work done to the truck, I would much rather have myself to blame than a shop. I justify my refusal to take it in by saying that it's a rare oddball of a vehicle that demands specific attention. I guess the roughly $600 in labor costs I've saved helps too. I do like the guys I took my MJ to to get the A/C fixed and my catalytic converter replaced (I don't have a welder at home) but that's pretty much it. Of course, trust isn't really my strong suit and as far as I'm concerned 90% of mechanics are out to screw people out of money.

.The House of Representatives is only half of Congress, the other half being the Senate. The law is also not a tax, because the gummint is not taking money for health care - it is instead requiring insurance to be purchased from private companies, similar to the requirement to have to purchase automobile insurance. (I don't like such requirements on general principle, but have your car smashed one time by an uninsured motorist and see if you like that...). I had a sneaking suspicion when the seatbelt law passed, and every time a no smoking law passes, that it was a precursor to some kind of health care legislation, but I have no proof it is part of the same agenda ("protect your health for the good of the collective, guard your contribution to the greater good"). . Indeed, no law is above repeal, and I am all for that. But the Republicans tried 42 times (last count I heard) to repeal it once it passed and failed every time - and now they are resorting to the cheap parliamentary trick of shutting down the government in a final attempt to force their way. I think we can all agree that they don't have your best interest in mind, but rather that of their corporate sponsors and the dollars they represent. (Not to say that wealth should not be protected - if well managed it represents potential for present and future prosperity, and must be guarded and even nurtured... but that there is a whole 'nother discussion.) . . . I like your skunk reference. Here is my favorite: Know how you can tell if a politician is lying? Watch his mouth to see if it is moving... :agree: Nobody in Washington has anyone but their own interests in mind. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either extremely naive or a fool. But I shouldn't repeat myself.

'best Offer Over $20,000'
Minuit replied to Automan2164's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
If he can do this, I'm putting mine up for $45k. At least I wouldn't be lying by saying 'no rust'.
