So I've been wondering recently about CC and how I could contribute in a big way. There's a lot of great information here, but a lot of it is spread out and a lot of times people have to post question threads to get basic answers. What would the community's thoughts be about me (and possibly some others) compiling a guide aimed at potential MJ buyers condensing all of the relevant information into one fairly simple, organized section? I realize this would be a big undertaking and it would take a while to get right, but that's really not a major concern for me. I'd be doing this for my own enjoyment and to hopefully help someone. Naturally, considering the widely varying conditions of the trucks we see for sale, one-size-fits-all advice wouldn't really be possible but we could definitely outline the most important things all in one easily reachable spot. I'm open to any ideas/comments/suggestions/insults y'all may have and I just wanted to see what kind of interest there would be in something like this. Just a simple but comprehensive, easily read, centralized write-up with all of the big stuff in one place free of misinformation and off-topic debates.

It's a fun idea. They mentioned in the article they modified the cooling system to make it not melt as fast. Things like this usually don't last too long down here

January, 2014 - Alexia's '87 Sportruck
Minuit replied to neohic's topic in Comanche of the Month (MJOTM)
Now THIS is what I think of when I think "Comanche of the Month" - A long term build that's so well done you can't even tell it's the same truck (much of it isn't!) on top of running the website. That someone even has the skills to do something like this is exemplary and shows just how much talent we have here at CC. Congratulations and much luck to you. You're right up there with earl*t and knever3 on my list of favorite restorations, just off the top of my head but there's too many to name. Keep up the good work (do I even need to say this?) Truly far, far beyond the call of duty. I can't wait to see how fast that thing will go with 6 pounds of boost. -
Driveway Ornament To Daily Driver: 7 Years!
Minuit replied to Minuit's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
I celebrated my new year with a trip to the junkyard. It was really, really cold and windy today so I didn't get much of the stuff I was looking for. When it warms up, I'll be back. I haven't made any changes to the MJ but the next round of work will probably be mechanical with some minor upgrades mixed in. However, the JY did have this 84 XJ (that I liked for some reason) : ... from which I impulsively pilfered this: ...which puts this XJ's approximate build date in January-February 1984. 30 years old and it's in better shape than mine! It still has the trim around it and doesn't have any scratches in it. It also has the AMC logo molded into it which instantly makes it superior. Just a little touch of not-black would look good I figured. -
I suppose we're feeling the same things now as the FSJ guys did when the XJ first came out. Eventually the KL will be the "common Jeep" and we'll all probably get over it. That said, the KL is a car, make no mistake and the 4x4 system isn't really intended for hard wheeling like some of us do. That's what Jeeps have become (with the exception of the Wrangler): "American" Subarus. Not that that's a bad thing. XJs are going up in price down here too but I still see swarms of them in my pretty small town. The ones I see are usually either clean stockers, beaters, or well-worn wheeling rigs with not much in between. The first XJs are now 30 years old, and the numbers are definitely going to start dwindling soon but good deals are still out there.

Wait, we have koolaid now? Back in my day we didn't even have stickers! Kids and their newfangled ways of creating followers. Welcome to the club, Lime. Sounds like another happy owner, good looking rig too. Seeing as how all these MJ's are popular with the college crowd and such, I'm thinking AMC just released this truck ahead of it's time. Good 'ol forward thinking AMC, make your name known long after your demise. Can there be limeade? Har har. My college classmates also admire my truck, which I had not anticipated when I set out to buy an $800 vehicle which I only expected to last a year or two, lol. It's goin' strong, though. Can't complain one bit. High school senior here. I get a lot of the same admiration from my classmates. Never had a negative comment on it, and I get lots of funny looks and stares  It'll last you more than a year or two, I promise you. MJs aren't too good at dying, and don't be surprised when you end up wanting to keep it forever. Just check those floorboards! And post more pics, we love pics here. P.S. I'm impressed that you got so stuck with a 2wd truck that you broke your shovel! P.P.S. MJs are great vehicles to learn with. Simple, reliable and easy enough to work on.

 The things I would do for a $900 running 5.9 ZJ... lucky. :P

. :MJ 1: . Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas/Joyous Hanukkah/whatever to all!

There are times when I have hope for humanity. Then I see crap like this. Enough stupid for a whole county right there. (merry christmas!)

:agree: Now you've gotten me thinking I should have cleaned mine better when I tore my interior apart. Is that patch panel riveted on?
-
Very nice. Looks like you achieved your goal, and that's what counts. Looks clean and strong.

"unleaded fuel only" :laughin:

 The only time I approve of an MJ getting turned into a truggy - when it's a piece of %#^t to begin with!

Looks like the perfect beater to me. What's the highest mileage known running MJ?
-
The unknown mileage will possibly a big problem if you try to sell it. If I was buying the top price would be $1500. Just because it's a 92 doesn't make it worth gold. Don't expect to get the money you put into out of it. A $3000 MJ in my own opinion is as many as possible of these: - extremely clean with no rust or mechanical or electrical problems - loaded with options (think a clean 4x4 Eliminator or Metric Ton) - Rare configuration or options - Has a 4.0 - Well setup for wheeling - has a well documented history (mileage known) Just because someone asks $5k doesn't mean they're getting it. Anyone who pays that much for an MJ has either found a really good one or is paying too much.

So very sorry for your loss.

There's only 390 MJs in the registry so far. There were close to 200,000 MJs made in total according to the numbers I've found. That means a fifth of one percent of the total production run is noted on this site. A good ~20% of the MJs in the registry are junkyard finds that have probably been crushed. However, nobody really knows how many MJs or what percentage of them are still left. That said, most registered MJs have a personal connection of some kind to a CC member (who deliberately sought out others to talk about trucks with), so it really isn't a great representation of the total population. Most of the MJs that have been destroyed over the years were wrecked by non CC members and nobody really knows what happened to them. Interesting question though and I often ponder it myself. I'd guess there's probably about 50,000 MJs still in good condition (not rusting etc) but that's probably wildly inaccurate.

Great to see another TN MJ(I assume you're in TN anyway). Good to see that it's going to an excited owner. The issues you're describing are typical of Renix (87-90) trucks and the fixes are pretty well documented. You'll also want to look at your electrical grounds as they may be contributing to some of your problems and if they're not yet, they will eventually. Someone will probably come around with the go-to documents for Renix elec. problems. If not, I'll send that your way as soon as I get to my PC. As always, feel free to ask us every question that passes through your mind! You have a manual transmission (AX-15 on a '90, good), so your fusebox melting is easily explained. Likely a leaky clutch master cylinder. Good to see a 5-speed Eliminator. That's the best MJ configuration you can really get in my opinion.

Hunter green metallic? The only other MJ that's known to be that color from the factory is toxic orange right now. That's a one of a kind vehicle.

The 2.8 was (officially) discontinued as soon as the 4.0 came online in 1987. Are you sure it was an 88? If it's an actual 88 with an actual 2.8, that's something really, really strange.
