I ran open for probably 2 months 3 different times in high school on my 1986 with the 2.8 with no problems and constantly redlined the poor truck nearly every shift (had to just get moving :) . All I did was unbolt the exhaust and remove everything including the cat at the 4 bolt flange and left the y in place . Those were the days !!

vac, valves, carb, i don't know anymore
86FUBAR replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When I did the valves in my old 2.8 I did it per the chiltons book and it was all messed up . The book was for a S10 2.8 of same era but it had me IIRC like 2turn past zero lash or some thing which was way past my "been doing this for years gut feeling" but did it anyways and it ran like poo so I did it all over by feel and IIRC only went a 1/4 to 1/2 past zero lash and was perfect . The only vehicle I ever messed with that needed to be adjusted while running were the old chevy straight 6 , though I have done it on some random stuff . If the lifters are collapsing try running some thicker oil and see what happens -
86 Comanche 2.8l Engine Swap
86FUBAR replied to Kano808's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I didn't need the knock sensor so it was ditched and I don't have AC but both engines use the same motor mounting locations so I would guess it wouldn't be in the way and the stock AC compressor is mounted on top of the engine next to the alt . -
86 Comanche 2.8l Engine Swap
86FUBAR replied to Kano808's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I did the 3.4 swap and love it ! Had to keep the carb for emissions reasons but some say keeping the fuel injection is easy . It was a super easy swap and the power gain is ten times better. !! -
That all depends on location and availability , I had to pay $1000 bucks for my 3.4v6 when I did my swap but I couldn't find any local and I couldn't find a complete car either so I got one from a large wrecking company 4hrs away from me !
-
When I did this swap I just cleaned out the axle housing from the cad to the knuckle and installed outer axle tub seals ! And then I just over filled the axle a smidgen to off set having to fill part of the tube I ran it like that for a couple years with out any problems.

D44 Swap With D35 Drive Shaft. Too Long...
86FUBAR replied to 8valvehero's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just lift it till it fits ! That's what I would do !! Or you could drill new axle centering holes in the spring perches and move the axle back an inch or so. -
Would removing the front axle assembly and having a cleaner shot at it be easier ? I don't have a 4.0 so I don't know but that's what I would try

Good Grounding Point In The Back Of The Cab?
86FUBAR replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ya I just used my seat bolts as well but IIRC the grounding wire on the amp isn't supposed to be longer than like 14 or 18 inches or something like that -
These kind of deals are really good , me and the wife have done some of these over the years all with 100% effective ness but you have to make sure to stay on top of the payments etc... And watch the balances closely . It's just like the Home Depot 12-24 month no interest on purchase from 300$-1500$ etc...as long as you pay it off with in the time frame given then you save big but if you don't you get hit with pending interest and it's those people that screw up that they are counting on. If you look at the bill it breaks it down completely for you and if you still screw it up then you just suck at managing money.

Mine stayed together for years ! Right up to the day I yanked it out :) I was plagued with leaks when I first acquired my manch but mine was just the collector flange gasket that kept needing to be retightened

Future 1986 Comanche Owner
86FUBAR replied to Dangileri's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I wouldn't hesitate to own another 2.8 , had one in my bros 1986 s10 and it runs great still to this day and the one I had in my manch took one hell of a beating and was still going right up to the day i took it out though it was really worn out as I wasn't kind at all to it . It was prity gutless but worked well , no sure on the mpg as I never checked it when it was stock and the truck now runs a 3.4 . This just my personal opinion from some one who has owned them before . -
2.8 Fuel Pump Options, Round 2
86FUBAR replied to mpace6a's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Where is your pump located ? Remember that these pumps are better pushers than pullers so the closer to the tank the better. My bro in law has a 69 FJ with a 350/350/203 combo with a holly 4v carb and was running a mr gasket pump for a couple months till it gave up the ghost because it was mounted on the firewall 3 feet from the carb with only the carb filter installed and about 18 inches above the tank . It now sits 12" from the tank with filters before and aft hard lined all the way to the carb with a new mr gasket pump running it and has been working perfect for the last 5 years . I'm not yet convinced the pump is your problem . -
At work we weld a 1/2" fine thread nut and use a short 1/2" long bolt with a coper washer on it for the drain , we install them on tranny pans and diff covers as well and as long the weld is done right it doesn't leak a drop !

I'm on a roll today ! After doing a little work to it I decided to wash and "wax as you dry" the truck and even threw some armor all on it here and there . Truck hasn't looked this good in a long time!
-
Haven't done much but drive the manch around the yard and down to the feed store but I decided to do two things to it today that have been on my list for a couple years now . The first thing was to install the MSD blaster coil I got almost 2years ago which only took about ten minutes . And the second was to make it a little more man friendly under the truck , this was something I thought of probably 6 years ago and is my IMO one of the best up upgrades iv done in a long time !

Help With Tool Box Options.
86FUBAR replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I used 20 mil ammo cans at the back of my manch ! I bolted them down and welded a piece of chain link that I cut in half to the box so it protruded through the folding handle of the box on either side and bought a 4 pack of matching locks, and that freed up a lot of room in my larger main center box up against the cab! The only problem now is I have trouble remembering where everything is . -
Y'all are on crack ! That thing is the oddest coolest thing ever , I'd drive that thing every where .

Possible Transfer Case Problem?
86FUBAR replied to mdwatson's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The np 207 you've got uses spur cut or straight cut gears which have a tendency to be quite loud and not as strong as the helical cut or angled gears used in the np 231 which run much quieter . Iv read about many people using motor oil in their T cases to help quiet them down . I personally run one bottle of Lucas tranny stop leak in place of one equivalent bottle of ATF but not for any potential noise reduction as my truck is loud inside and out anyways . -
lol! my mom still pays my registration for my manch ! and I get to her here bug me every 2 years to go down to the dmv and put that "thing" in my name since I don't technically own it ( yes she gets paid back...eventually.... as its become a bit of a joke around my family) . Anyhow it cost $104 to register a truck that might get a 200 miles a year put on it , it used to be a heck of a lot cheaper but someone went and changed that.
