I bought my first MJ intending to build it up. The one I bought is pretty well beat up so I'm not ruining anything by modifying it. The short bed has the wheelbase I want. The front end being XJ means it's easy to swap in the front Dana 60 and lift it. The rear leaf springs makes bolting up anything easy as well. The 4.0 is a stout engine that has tons of mods available. At this point I'm considering getting another one once this first project is "done". I'd like one as a drive around truck. Maybe a metric ton so I can use it more as a truck.

A few years back I was living in Oklahoma. We got a snow storm and they were out plowing the main streets. I was in mt J10 at a light sitting next to a minivan when a plow crossed the intersection, leaving a 2 foot berm across our path. The guy in the minivan looked over at me with an "I can't get through that" look. I flashed him a "watch this" smile just as the light turned green. I gunned it and bashed right through the berm. Looking back through my mirror I saw everyone else funnelling through the hole I made.

You can hear the car coming when they have them on there. A strange clicking noise of the studs on the pavement. I mostly see people driving cars using them. I've thought about getting a set for my Subaru but if the snow is really bad I take the XJ anyway.

I'm running Quadratec heated LEDs in my XJ. They don't look like a traditional headlight. But they aren't as bad as some of the cheap lights on the market. They are very good headlights though and that's why I run them. I will probably put a set into my MJ when the time comes. Mostly for technical reasons as appearance is less important to me personally. I do get why people like traditional style headlights on their old Jeeps. They just look like they should be there while LED lights look "weird".

I'm thinking of the adults being worse than kids in school. They get worse as they get older.

We can run studded snow tires here in Colorado. I'm happy with how well Duratracs do in the snow and they will accept standard studs. Studded Duratracs will make you unstoppable until you hit snow that's above your bumper or ruts that you high center on.

Yep. Standard J10. Look for any full size Wagoneer (Grand Wagoneer) from the 70's through 1985 for a compatible dash. Likewise, the full size Cherokee (1974-1983) has the same dash as well. There were 3 basic dashes available in the full size Jeep. From 1963 to the early 70's they had one style. From the early 70's (I forget exact year) through 1985 they ran the second style (the one you have in your 79). From 86-91 they ran the 3rd style dash. Best places to ask: www.ifsja.org www.fsjnetwork.com Both of those sites have forums with a lot of members buying and selling all kinds of full size Jeep parts. You should be able to find what you need there.

It's probably a response to the new Bronco. The 6.4 is overkill for normal driving. And probably a $10k upcharge. A 5.7 hemi would be a good option for a 4 door.

Run the power to the lockup converter through a dual pole brake light switch like GM used for the 700R4. They had one pole for the brake light (normally closed but the button was depressed with foot off the brake). They added a normally open (closed with foot off the brake) switch that would cut power and disable the torque converter lockup when you press on the brake.

I'm talking about PA. I'm just speculating on what it would take to do that trip from Denver. Moab is 6 hours from me. I most likely won't have my MJ done in time for next fall. Maybe 2022.

If you go to the Cole Hersee website, they have lots of options for those switches. The 58327 series has lights. The -01 is the single pole, single throw version. The -06 is the single pole, double throw. They make them without lights in them, as well as having double pole and momentary switches as well so you can find what you want. They're available on Amazon once you find the part number.

Automatic lockers and snow don't mix well. You'd be better off with a limited slip or selectable locker. But those are a whole lot more expensive.

I like long road trips. And if I can break up the trip with a few stops and make it a 2 week holiday it would be easier to handle.

I just looked it up. 24 hours plus stops for me. It's only 16 minutes longer if I go up to I80 instead of taking I70 the whole way. But that would let me stop and visit family in Iowa along the way.

Everyone starts at the bottom. Oil change shop, parts store, tire shop. Gotta pay your dues for a couple of years. The sooner you start the faster you get through it. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn. Don't be afraid of working hard and pitching in where they need you. Make contacts with as many people as you can. Be the guy they can depend on. Follow the opportunities that present themselves. Get your license as soon as you can. Find a good tech school and get the certifications after you're done with high school.
