Would you be doing the rebuild or paying somebody to build it for you? If you were paying someone to build it and it didn't have a warranty, I'd probably be looking at a Reman unit.

Are you using an old transmission cooler? I'd make sure that isn't plugged. How long did the XJ sit? It could be possible that the transmission is all varnished up now and it needs to be flushed.

Indeed it does. We are suspecting that, because the car sat for probably 2 decades, the ATF became varnish and plugged it up. Even though we flushed it, we must not have gotten at all. On the bright side, I should be good for many more miles!

No it does not! I’m glad this was a southern car and I didn’t lose a cooler line. It does suck that the cooler got plugged and cooked though.

I think it would look fantastic with some maroon Pioneer stripes. Maybe Sportruck stripes.

Never a dull moment owning 2 80s AMC products. The transmission cooler got plugged up and cooked the transmission. We pulled it out and I’m bringing it to get rebuilt tomorrow. It wouldn’t shift into second or third anymore. It went from no issues, to not shifting in 2 days.

My brother has that same model! I think he is going to build it to match his truck.

I think you should keep the old front end if you are delinking turbines. But I’m sure you will make it look good either way.

He will need to be a good grinder to make his welds look good, more than likely. He will also have to grind the welds smooth if they are on the body.

We’ll get you through it. We will all just have to be patient, and you will have to be a good grinder.

@ExpatMJGuy, are you parting this out now? If so, would you be interested in selling the front fender flares, if they are in good condition?

In the rust belt, you could probably get $4,500-$7,000 for it, depending on your patience, if the paint is in good shape. Many of us up here would rather do a 4.0 and 4wd swap than deal with rust.

Shoot, I really want to try driving a 4 cylinder now. Even my 4.0 on a 3" lift will run down Camaros and Mustangs in the corners.

I’m going to pursue mechanical engineering to later go in to the automotive industry. I would love to design and build engine performance parts (ideally 4.0/4.2 parts because I have a test bed for those).

It’s looking like this is probably it’s last winter that it will have to be tucked in. This time next year, I should be down in AZ for school.

IMHO, I wouldn’t run any of those modifications. The truck doesn’t look tall enough to need steps, the scoops will probably look cheap parts store ones when installed, and the visor just seems like a could spot for water leaks. I am putting an OEM front bumper back on my truck, so I need new flares and valance to replace the flares that I cut. I am looking for very good ones, and I want them to be the raw plastic finish. I would be willing to trade my trimmed flares if someone is looking to go that route.
