  1. The nicest thing I like about a garage and cement floor is that when I crawl under a car or truck I know I'm not going to meet a rattlesnake wanting to share the same space. :shake:
  2. It's goin. Used Syn ATF+++. Definitely shifts much smoother, Tip: When replacing the flat filter in the transmission, remove the seal from the filter. Put it in place in the trans. Using a hammer tap it gently until it's seated. Then install the filter. Don't leave it on the filter and try to install them. Near as I can tell that was my problem. All the stuff I read trying to figure out what was wrong, not one source mentioned that. :wrench:
  3. Door retainer. Keeps the door from flying out to far.
  4. I'm thinking that piece that looks like a A arn is actually the exhaust pipe. Also it looks like the bumpers bent. :???:
  5. It was sucking air all right. The , expletive, filter came out of the ,expletive, hole and was just hanging there by the ,expletive, screw. When I tried putting it back the fit was so sloppy it wouldn't stay. Another trip back to AutoZone and a vent of my feelings on the poor guy behind the counter. Expletive :wrench:
  6. That's not it. Just ran it through all drive positions and nada. Any way after a nights rest and cooling off to where I can think I've decided it's got to be the seal where the filter tube plugs into the tran body. It's sucking air, not fluid. It's a good thing I enjoy crawling under trucks and dropping pans or I would be p*ssed. :fs1:

    Oil change

For anyone wondering, I have never nor will I ever change oil while it's cold unless there's a valid reason. Only brought the subject up for discussion. :wavey:
  8. Have no idea what the noise is. Run a compression check. While it's running, pull one plug wire at a time. This will at least narrow it down to which cylinder.
  9. I just changed both filters and cleaned everything on the GF 2006 Dodge 1500 transmission. 5.7, auto, 4WD. Now it won't move. Went thru 3 filters. The auto parts store kept giving me the wrong one. The last one was the right one. Spent over 2 hours searching the net with no joy. Move the shift lever thru all positions, nothing. Acts like the shift lever is disconnected and/or it's not getting fluid from the pan into the tranny. Got 6qts of ATF+4 in it. Any ideas? :dunno: I hate new cars. Give me my over 20 year old Jeep.
  10. I am not familiar with every tow dolly ever manufactured. Only two, Roadmaster and Acme. The Roadmaster has electric brakes and the Acme has surge brakes. And yes, for a 20 mile trip dolly brakes are overkill, unless somebody pulls out in front of you or a kid, animal runs out into the road. Also many people use dollys for more than a 20 mile trip. Try going down Graneros hill, Monarch Pass or Wolf Creek with a car on a dolly pushing you. You will not only wish you had dolly brakes but also a ton of bricks to drag. Also several states and Canadian provinces require them.
  11. Only biggy I can think of,, use a tow dolly with brakes. And just take it easy. I've towed MJ'S, XJ'S and WJ'S on a tow dolly without brakes using my '88 MJ 2.5 with AX4. But only when I couldn't use the J20 or Dodge.
  12. Sorry. Couldn't resist.
  13. Maybe there's just so much hot air inside the cab that the pressure keeps the wet out. :D :rotf:
  14. Did you take I-25 or go down the valley on 285? Wondering why ya didn't stop in Pueblo for a eyeball an coffee. :dunno:

    Bad Day

[quote name="danbyrambler"- BTW how's your neck feel? Have you mentioned the law offices of Dewey' date=' Cheatem & Howe to your BIW? - - - LOL 2nd part's BS - Tax thing isn't
  16. All input shafts on standard transmissions have a little play. When they're installed the snout is in the pilot bushing and keeps it steady,. Normal wear will do a seal in. Are you referring to the crankshaft rear seal or the transmission front seal?

    Oil change

I'm sure that you all have had, as I have, that to change the oil properly the engine must be warm. THis is so all the impurities are drained out with the oil. My question is why? It is my belief that when ever the engine is shut down all the oil and impurities drain to the bottom of the engine and into the oil pan. Say you shut it down of an evening when getting home and go out the next morn to change oil, and filter. So what do the impurities do during the night. Crawl back up into the engine? Now it's nice and cold and you can remove the drain plug without hot oil running down your arm and neck. Cold oil feels much better. Now somebody is going to point out the crud in the bottom of the pan. Perfectionist. If it bothers you so much, drop the pan and clean it. Just rambling. :D :dunno:
  18. August?? What happens in August? :smart: :dunno:
  19. Check the beach. Maybe those balls the fishermen use to float their nets might work.

    Just musing

Shot my first turkey yesterday! Scared the $#!& outta everyone in the frozen food section. It was awesome! Gettin' old is so much fun... Remember: Don't make old People mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off.
  21. It is not a AW4. I can recognize them. It is a square , rectangular shaped pan like the later autos. Not ruling out the possibility of a PO swapping something out.I am going to try and put a 44RE into a 98 ZJ.
  22. Picked up a '98 WJ, or is that a ZJ? 4.0, auto. Anyway the trannys bad. I have a '98 WJ, or is that a ZJ, 5.2, auto. Can I just swap the 44RE for the bad 42RE or is there something to look out for? I also have a '94XJ with a 4.0 and 42RE. Would that work? I prefer to use the 44 because I understand they 're stronger, according to the results I got from search. I will be keeping the transfer cases with their transmissions. :dunno:
  23. On the full size AMC 20. Has anybody pulled the tubes out of the housing and cut a couple inches off them to where a MJ axle shaft would fit? Push the tubes back in and then weld them?
  24. Big mistake. You see something you want in a JY, get it now. It ain't gonna be there when you get back.
