  1. Picked up a '97 WJ the other day, Bad transmission. PO had pulled both drive shafts and transfer case but quit when he got to the transmission. A couple Ben's changed hands and it was mine. Dropped the pan, replaced filter and adjusted bands. Replaced trans case and rear drive shaft. Couldn't find the trans jack so had to do it the old way. Flat on my back, lift TC up get it started, then hold it in place with one hand and get a nut started with the other. Cajone test? Jeep drives great in forward and reverse, instant response and no slippage. However it doesn't shift out of low. Checked 2 electrical connectors, 1 vacuum line, shift linkage, throttle hooked up. Really don't want to drop the pan again. Any ideas? :hmm:
  2. Sounds like bearing s to me. When the engine gets warm the bearing clearance increases and the oil pump can't keep up. The very first thing I suggest you do is get a pressure gauge and check your current gauge, sender unit for accuracy. Two ways to check bearing is remove the pan, remove rod and main bearing caps and measure the clearance. Any major shop should have a pressure machine and you can check clearance without removing the bearing caps but will still have to drop the pan. Apply pressure to the oil gallery and see how much the oil flows out of the bottom of the engine. You could go to a heavier oil and get by for awhile but that would only be postponing the inevitable.

    A Request

If you can't find one closer to home, I believe I've got one. Also got the front skid.
  5. Looks like my skillet after I've fried a couple eggs for breakfast.
  6. The ol memory cells ain't working like they used to. I knew I had read all that info someplace before but couldn't remember anything about it. The minute I read 1987 Comanches' reference about the speedo gear it all came back. Search was no help. Thanks fellas.
  7. It's right side up OK but it's inside out.
  8. 1986 did not come with a 6 foot bed. Those weren't available until 1987. The tail gate receives a lot of punishment and is one of the first things to be swapped. The spare tire, and tire carrier, was standard on MJ.
  9. Can the transfer case (4WD) and the extension housing (2WD) be freely swapped on the AX15, or is the output shaft lengths different? Not worried about the spline count.
  10. When I bought my '77 J20 it came without a rear bumper. I had my choice of taking it that way or getting one of the three options the dealer offered,
  11. Bobby I can't seem to get email or PM to work so here is the info. Jim Subj: Re: Dana 44 Rear End - $400 (Pueblo County/Mesa) sorry for the delay. we still have the rear end. i can contact hom or he can contact me. whatever is easier. thank jim. tom cell 303-518-6895 trsisneros@msn.com
  12. Nice pic. Was she on the ground or flying alongside? As a photo nut, interested in the camera, lenses, Looks like telephoto was used.
  13. Apparently they didn't try hard enough.
  14. Kind of hard (But not impossible ) to screw up a tranny by changing fluid an filter. Should be looking at the shift linkage. Didn't get something hooked up or not hooked up right.
  15. I know Explorer makes a good candidate for axle swap but how about a 1988 Bronco? I know nothing about them except that they're Fords. Also that they were based on the Ford F150. If it were closer I'd get it just for scrap but it's 90 miles away. It's 4WD. No engine. SEARCH was of no help.
  16. A woman's place is in the kitchen. That's where I clean my engine parts so she can too. :rotfl2:
  17. There's a fella about 40 miles from me. Got a D44 from a '87 MJ. Wants $400 for it. If you want I can send contact info.
  18. Let's see the Hogs.

    Advice Column

Dear Ann Landers A year ago I met the most beautiful, charming, intelligent young lady I had ever met. We hit it off immediately. After the second date she moved in with me. We were living the dream world so many couples would like to share but few accomplish. We did everything together, Jeeping, flying, sailing, hiking, biking, rock crawling. Everything. Yesterday my world crumbled around me. I came to find a empty house. She was gone. She took everything. My MJ, art collection, entertainment center, tools, Authentic Elvis presley and Marilyn Monroe autographed photos. Everything. I am devastated. Ann. How can I get my Jeep back? MJLess.
  20. Try the basics first. Is there crud in the tank? It is possible to remove the fuel pump, sending unit and use a light and mirror to look into the tank. However I would recommend doing it right. Drop the tank, clean it and check pump and filter while it's out. Eliminate the easy (IE, Cheap) before you start throwing money at it.
  21. Wires don't just burn. It takes a short circuit for them to, or an external source of heat. Hopefully you found the short when you pulled the old wiring. You DID find the short didn't you, before replacing the burnt stuff. I make a guess it was the wire from the alternator to the battery, the one with the melted insulation.
  22. IMHO changing the gears is easier than the whole rear end. However it does require a little fines and knowledge of what you're doing.Clearances and crush. Swapping the rear end just requires removing bolts. unhooking lines. removing rear end. Installing new RE. Installing previous ly removed bolts and hooking all the lines back up. No fines involved. Just brawn. The D35 isn't as strong as some others but it's not the junk some imply. I have a couple with over 300K on them and their still working. Of course they weren't abused either. If you can get a D44 or 8for a reasonable price then go for it. Otherwise use the D35 and baby it.
  23. Suggest you drop the pan and see what's in it. You're looking for bits, tiny, of metal. It will either be fine, powdery or very small pieces,Drop the rear main for a visual inspection. Post pics and the guys here may be able to come up with something useful. Good luck.
