  1. If all you want is a good looking pavement queen then this is your answer. However don't do amy rough country travelin.
  2. One thing I think Pete is in arrears for for not mentioning. I just pulled the mats in my '87 XJ.There was over 8 inches of snow leaving 2 inches of water on the floor. Pulled the mat and got hit by the most gawd awful rotten smell I have ever experienced in my life. I think they use formaldehyde in their manufacture. Gonna go clean the cesspool now so I can get a breath of fresh air. Oh yes. The floor did have some lite surface rust, easily taken care of. PULL YER FLOOR MATS. Good advice. incidently, a soaking wet floor mat weighs over 500Lbs.Welll. That's what it felt like.
  3. You are right. Just wasn't thinking.Again.
  4. I pulled the cover's and counted the teeth. They're 3.73's altho I wud prefer the 3.07.
  5. One thing to remember when swapping over the HO head for the Renix: The ports on the HO are a different height and to maximize the swap you need to also swap both manifolds, or do a port, and polish, job. And check gasket alignment, They're notorious for a sloppy fit. On the gear ratio the way the Big trucks do it is first find the engines torgue peak. Say 3200 RPM. Then take the speed the truck will be travelling, 90 MPH,,er,,I mean 75 MPH. Now you select the GR or TS that will let the engine achieve it's power peak in it's highest gear. However you don't see too many 18 wheeler's rock climbing, but the basics are the same. Example. I have 2 '89 MJ's One is a 2.5 with 5speed and 4.11. The other is a 4.0, 5speed and 3.73. I notice no difference between the two on take off or doing the hwy at 75. I'm sure with a load it would make a diffrence. My 2 cents worth.
  6. Same here. Was at the U-Pull yesterday and saw a MJ.was nicer than anything I got. The dash an interior an tailgate already gone. Debating on whether to go back Monday and get the chrome frnt and RR bumpers.an WS.
  7. Can anyone recommend a good primer paint for covering rust? I remember a couple years back there was a product claiming to convert rust to Zinc. It's surface rust, not rust thru. My Jeep can burn more gas than your Jeep.
  8. If the teeth are worn they can be built up with weld. More trouble than it's worth. If it's just the pivot, drill out the rivet, make sure everything is centered, drill out the hole in both the mount and gear plate to a size where the hole is even and use a bolt. Make sure the moving part is on the bolt shoulder and not the thread. Actually there are so many YJ,in the JY it's easier to just replace it.
  9. I don't think a NP231 ever breaks. In the last couple years I've parted out 6 YJ'S. Selling the engines and trannys was no problem, However I've still got 6 231's, and a couple 18's an 20's.
  10. I tried lifting my floor mats. Couldn't budge them. They was rusted to the floor. :D
  11. I have done it B4.got a '84 Cherokee stripped body. Had the 2.8 in it.Took a '89 Cherokee roll over and swapped everything. 4.0L, AX15. computer, wiring, gas tank, everything. It was a pain in the butt. But it worked. The part about chopping up a perfectly good MJ got to me. Thanks Pete, So,,,, gonna do it that way.Let ya know how it turns out. Jim Wish I still had my old '38 Buick 4dr convertable. It wasn't this hard to work on, and was a heck of a dern sight more fun. Horseless carriage? Forget it. They'll never catch on.
  12. Dern, Never thought about that. Ok, let's see. 1. I just like doin wierd stuff. 2. I always do things the hard way. 3. The Cherokee has the HO4.0 engine and 4WD. The Comanche has the 2.5 and 2wd. 4. And then there is the computer and all the wiring. Jim
  13. The situation. I have a 2001 Cherokee that was totaled in a roll over.Has title. I have a 1989 Comanche, rust dent free body. No title The plan. Cut everything off the Cherokee level with the floor leaving the firewall an dash(with the VIN plate).Remove all body stuff, cab, fenders, doors, etc, the bed and the 11inces of frame from the Comanche and attach it to the floor of the Cherokee.Voila! A 2001 Comanche. I could just get a abandoned vehicle title for the Comanche but where's the fun in that? Keep ya posted, with pics. Horseless carriage? Forget it. They'l never catch on.
  14. I have 2 MJ's, Both '89's, One is the short bed, 5sp, 2.5L,2WD.The other is long bed, 5sp, 4.0L, 4WD. Frankly I don't notice that much difference between them performance wise. But when pulling the stock trailer I use the '77 J20.
