my favorite hands-on job was the year I was a repair tech at a prototype company. I fixed giant hydraulic presses CNCs and robotics, but the car-sized lasers were my favorite. the old one (made in the 80s?) was bigger than a truck! sounded like a jet when the fan fired up.

90s wrangler ax15 with transfer case
Pete M replied to rylee144's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
it's not that bad of a project. but you'll make your life easier by sourcing the crossmember and trans shifter (handle plus the tower), and t-case linkage from an XJ. if the wrangler was a TJ, you'll get a t-case with a sealed rear output. -
great find!

I would do as much of the big jobs as possible before paint. less chance of scratching stuff later on while you're wrestling with an axle or something.

90s wrangler ax15 with transfer case
Pete M replied to rylee144's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
you might need to. between the t-case being rotated up a bit plus you don't have the AX-15 crossmember with the little drop in the middle, it might be a tight fit. also the wrangler shifter handle get super close to the dash in 1,3,5. But it's doable. I have a 2000 AX-15 in my 88. -
a nice looking truck, but I've got some questions, like where's the center console, where's the floor trim on the drivers side, why do the pioneer stripes end at the cab, and that seems like a lot of clutch pedal wear for only 7k miles. but most of all, why does carfax show 150k miles at last odometer reading? something is fishy here. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-jeep-comanche-6/

as far as we know, it's a concept car and thus is un-sellable. It is housed at a super-secret Chrysler storage facility surrounded by a plethora of other goodies like Superbirds and turbine cars and minivans. I may or may not have been there and may or may not have been allowed to run around like a kid in a candy store pulling up car covers to see what all I may or may not have found. dang, that was a fun day. allegedly. on the other hand, I also would have thought the land speed record MJ would have been unsellable too. now it's in a private owner's hands and so far lost to time.

nice! how well do they match the rocker lines?

I'm a big fan of the Liberty 8.25 since it's a little bit wider than the MJ/XJ axles and so better accommodate the MJ's big butt. (the bed of an MJ is wider than the back of an XJ, which is why the rear tires always looked tucked under the bed)

oh, that's pretty sweet.

do we get to see pics of the new digs?

Transmission identification and advice
Pete M replied to Manche' Boi's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
in its defense, it still got me home. maybe 30 miles of ear-splitting (I had a finger shoved in my right ear) screaming gears after the oil all drained out... and eventually the last 10 miles stuck in 3rd... but I did get home.- 15 replies

as long as this thread deals with news and what's happening and stays away from conspiracy theories and fear mongering, it's all good. real bad stuff is appening right now and there's no ban against sharing it. But as soon as we start getting into the "why"s, I gotta put my foot down because that starts arguments and all the drama. I don't care if the world really is coming to an end, I want the CC to stay civil and as cheerful as we can. this is a respite from the rest of the world's problems. or at least as much as we can be. There are plenty of other places where you can engage others with who's right and who's wrong and what the fixes should be.

J+W is known to be kinda pricey.

ouch. that's a big chunk of change. but it is just money. if you've got the cash, and it's worth it to you, and you can't find any others to buy, maybe make him a counter offer. car-part.com might be able to find something for ya. be sure to look for XJ 44s too, since they are a different part number but are essentially the same thing but with different bracketry.

and there are truck guys bragging about their 15k winches.

is the video from when you first fired it up? or after it's hit operating temp? If you have no idea when the o2 sensor was last changed, it might not be a horrible thing to replace it just because.

don't worry, the software will shrink them automatically before saving. but it does sometimes hiccup on big files , so you may need to load one at a time.

we're finally living in the future!

back in the day Jeeps came with good transmissions. you know, before Chrysler started putting their own in. The AW4 and AX-15 are fantastic transmissions. you'll be happy with either. The Peugeot is... a transmission. Made of metal. Has some gears inside. Shifter knob sticking out the top. In its defense, mine lasted over 150k miles. buuuuut, then it blew up one day while just cruising along in rush hour traffic. like literally blew a hole out the side of the trans near 5th gear. wasn't even shifting at the time. I would never turn down an otherwise nice truck that had one, but I would be planning for that AX-15 swap in the near future.
